Films Not Movies

Mrs Hal and I went to the movies this afternoon and saw “Saltburn”.
Write ups and feedback were that it was very
impressive, I’m not sure, I get the story and the visuals were great but it just leads you down some paths that tests your senses.
Anyone else seen it ? Reaction ?
It is a wild ride.
First of all I’d say the cinematography was immaculate. 10/10. It is a beautiful looking film.
I think the direction was also very well done. She knows how to set up a scene and translate emotion and tension through camera angles, art direction and music.
The acting was excellent and every character was intriguing. It wasnt hard to get lost in the world they created. The character Oliver is the most fascinating Ive seen since Pearl in the films "X" and "Pearl".

The story though....its an eccentric version of "The Talented Mr Ripley" with a bit of "Cruel Intentions" thrown in portrayed through an extremely gay lens, with a piece of shit family totally underestimating one of the freakiest characters in cinema history. There are some scenes in this film designed to shock you to your core. They are gross and disturbing. They are nasty. For me though, I wasnt shocked by them, more just irritated that the writers thought they had to put them in there to get some reaction and buzz. As they occur, they do seem to fit the narrative, but once you are aware of the overall story, they become vehicles of shock value only. They did make me think the movie was heading in a certain direction momentarily, but when the ultimate reveal came, I found it a let down as I saw the twist coming a mile off. Most films do not work with ambiguous endings. This one required it. The ending sucked. It was formulaic and far too safe....terrible writing. That said, I did like the very end scene as he celebrates.

Overall, its a film I liked, but could have loved if they didnt go so hardcore for shock and completely F-up the ending.

What did you think of these two?

Both so different; I probably enjoyed Pearl more but the fact the lead actress plays both roles in X was really impressive.
Yeah she has done a great job.
X was a good slasher, surprised me. It was a lot of fun.
Pearl was crazy. I agree it was probably the better film and the performance of Mia Goth was oscar worthy.
Have you seen they have made a third film in that series called Maxxxine? Its a sequel to X.

Watched Hit Man on Netflix.
Not gonna say too much.
It’s a pile of shit. Boring, very very very poorly written, unfunny and it has no idea what sort of movie it wanted to be.
The ending sucks to high heaven.
3/10 and only because the two leads are watchable.

Just watched a rerun of Magnum Force/ Clint Eastwood, about a secret society of young cops who decide the best way to eliminate crime and reduce the expense of endless trials and incarcerations is to murder the criminals concerned.
Overseen by a senior, like minded officer it makes perfect sense to me for 21st century Victoria.
After all the Mafia are a secret society who take care of their own policing, as did the SS in WW2. Now if that was purely targeted at the criminal element so much of the problem could be resolved so quickly,
