Fonua gone for extended period

DT headline saying Mahe cut due to the roster purge.

I can't read the article though - maybe someone can shed some light?

Fonua has been informed he won't be offended a new deal.

Ah cool...thanks!

One thing Madge sure is - it's ruthless!

He's come here and within 12 weeks is already sweeping the place up.

On this forum, lately, I've been reading a lot of comments about people doubting Maguire, etc. This Tigers team has lacked a coach with a real cutting edge and as ruthless as Maguire is and will be. We haven't made the eight in 8 years. We need a Maguire right now. I don't want to hear anything until he's off contract. Let him have his tenure, unlike the other 4 or 5 coaches we've had in the past.

That's an extended break alright.

By letting the guy know now, at least he will have plenty of time to look for other options. Good move by Maguire to give him the heads up. And I doubt most on this forum would really have expected him to have been offered a new contract. I certainly didn't think so at any rate.

If Mahe were to "retire" and walk away from his contract we could find him a job as team hairdresser and everything would be cap exempt, right?

Shame about his injury, especially given he needs to play for a contract.

Surely someone in the UK would offer him one, reckon he'd kill it over there

So long mahe,

May u have a speedy recovery

U were a big asset in our games last year and this year, wish u the best to where ever u go next

Good post.

I love the way Maguire is being up front with these players and i love the way he is making decisions about these players.

I doubt anyone is safe.

Pretty much the season for Fonua, 3 - 6 months with a midfoot injury.

Add him to the shopping list.

That's a shame, Mahe always gives 100%, good luck with your recovery Mahe:+1:

According to the DT Mahe has been cut by the club....are we back to 29 players?

**Wests Tigers cut cult hero Mahe Fonua as roster restructure continues**

Wests Tigers forward Ben Matulino has revealed coach Michael Maguire has assured his future is safe. But it’s bad news for one of the club’s favourite sons.

Fatima Kdouh, The Daily Telegraph

Wests Tigers forward Ben Matulino has revealed that coach Michael Maguire has assured him he is not being forced out of the club but the news isn’t so good for another club favourite.

Matulino, who was signed to a four-year deal until the end of 2020 under former coach Ivan Cleary, has been the subject of reports surrounding a player clean out under new coach Michael Maguire.

The speculation about Matulino was only intensified on Tuesday after news Parramatta veteran and forward Tim Mannah would be joining the Tigers, effective immediately.

But the New Zealand international told The Daily Telegraph he has been told by Maguire he is wanted at the club.

Ben Matulino is confident of staying at the club. Picture: Brett Costello
“I’ve been told by Madge I am here for two more years and there is the possibility of Tim Mannah coming, which is pretty good,” Matulino said.

“He’s [Maguire] told the guys individually whether they are staying or not. But he’s told me I’m staying for two more years. When it first came out, I rang my manager asking ‘what is happening?’ and he goes ‘I haven’t heard anything from anyone’ and Madge said the same thing. Then my manager called me and he goes ‘I can guarantee you’re not leaving’ then I talked to Madge and he reassured the same thing.”

It’s an entirely different story for fan favourite and cult hero Mahe Fonua.

Fonua, who built a following on the back of his barnstorming runs and memorable hair styles, has been told he will not be re-signed at the Tigers.

The outside back joined the club in 2018 but despite starting in 11 matches this year is not part of Maguire’s long term plans.

The 26-year old suffered a serious foot injury last week against the Canberra Raiders meaning it may have well been his last game in Tigers colours.

Fonua went under the knife to repair the damage on Tuesday and it’s expected he will be out for at least 10 weeks.

Fonua’s untimely injury has forced a reshuffle of Maguire’s back five for Friday night’s clash against North Queensland in Townsville. Captain Moses Mbye will cover for Fonua at centre with Corey Thompson moving to fullback. Robert Jennings will line-up on the wing for Thompson.

Ordinary way for your career to end at a club.

At the end of the day Madge will live and (hopefully not,) die by the results.

Mahe has filled a hole, and has given his all but hopefully he makes way for someone who will take the team further.

No ..It means he wont be offered a contract beyond this season as his injury is a long term one it more than likely means we wont see him again in Wests Tigers colours..

We still have 1 roster spot to fill before June 30...

@Geo I heard a young upcoming player named Jordan Rankin would love to come here. Think he played at some club in the NRL a few years ago....

If just for the rest of this year. Good, experienced campaigner, goal kicker, as good as anyone else we have in the three quarters.

He's generally what we look for.
