Forget money, fix Origin: Bennett

Stop counting your money and start counting the cost of State of Origin if you are serious about player welfare. That was Wayne Bennett's blunt message to NRL stars complaining about five-day turnarounds, saying they were more worried about a lucrative Origin pay day than the toll the interstate series took on teams.

Bennett feared player burnout from the Origin period schedule could derail Brisbane's season but felt there was no point complaining to the NRL. "What's the point? It's not going to change," he said of addressing concerns to NRL. "Everyone has their say on it but nothing changes."

Bennett preferred to take aim at NRL stars who had spoken out about abolishing five day turnarounds. He said their priority should be pushing for stand alone Origin games, saying the inter-state series had the biggest impact on a team's season.

"Player welfare really starts around Origin time …but they are getting $30,000 a game and are happy to cop that and they shut their mouth about the other part and have a whinge about five-day turnarounds for the rest of the season," Bennett said."You can't have it both ways in my book.

"I can't seriously listen to players complaining about the five day turnaround until they get serious about Origin and say we shouldn't have to back up in two days. "If we were serious about player welfare, that would be the first thing (addressed)."

Bennett's view on five day turnarounds may be seen as a bit rich south of the border. The Broncos have one this year - Manly have four in the first nine rounds. Yet Bennett was still livid that his Queensland stars had to start the Origin period by playing three games in eight days. After the June 1 series opener in Sydney, Brisbane take on the Warriors on June 4 in Auckland and host Canberra on June 9\. After Origin II on June 22, Brisbane's Origin players must play three games in nine days.

"The five day turnaround is not the issue - it's how much you have to give (in Origin)," he said. "It's two or three weeks later (after an Origin game) when you are just flat and can't play. We could have seven or eight Origin players this year - and they are our best players. "Look at where we are nearly every season. "We are in the top two or three and when Origin is over we have finished all over the shop. Every time you get to this part of the year it is unchartered waters," he said.

How Ironic coming from Mr Bennett " players more worried about the $30,000 per game " and this guy has Coached New Zealand for the extra $$$$   .

Blow it out your cake hole Mr Bennett it's worth nearly an extra $100,000 to a regular Origin player .

He didn't care at the knights now he is back at the Broncs it's a concern.

Don't worry Wayne you are only playing Wests during Origin.

Well maybe we should do away with tpa altogether, than his origin players would have to disperse and leave the Broncos to get decent contract dollars elsewhere and Wayne wouldn't have this problem…

I think Wayne has reached that stage of life where the compassionate thing to do is for a nice man to put a bullet into the back of his scone.

I still reckon Origin should be held after the grand final. Teams do not play depleted during the Origin period, the two sides would then be made up of the best players who perform over the whole year. Then Origin could then be used as a platform for picking the best 17 in the country.

Unca Whine would be complaining at the price of the bullet.

The big know-all on everything RL….... would love to see him in charge of a rabble of a club who get no favours and see how well he can really coach.

If Test matches are anything to go by, the quality of the football played drops off a cliff at that time of yr. Middle of the yr is the best time for it. There just needs to be stand alone weekends.

That would seem the logical thing, but the reality of it is….Clubs like the Wests Tigers who would not feature in Semi Final Footy, players like Woods and Tedesco who would more than likely feature in an Origin series would go 5 weeks without footy by the time the semi Finals and Grand Finals are played and there match fitness would drop over that period.
There holidays would be affected aswell.

I respect Bennett, but 90% of what he says publicly is an attempt to get an advantage for his side. Even things re honestly believes in, like strengthening developing nations, fly out the window when the Broncos are concerned.

Look we have better alternatives

We need a 6 week period probably after Rd 14 ish (get rid of 9's etc and start in Mid February )

Once the 6 week window starts , we bring in a 6 week transfer window for players to switch clubs

We play City v Country and Qld could hold a Locals v Interstate trial

We Pick our Origin sides Monday And they play Sunday day

NZ Pick a South Island v North Island game and they play Saturday Day

NRL teams start a mid week comp Round Robin 4 groups /4 teams , top side from each group qualify , 4 x 20 minutes quarters unlimited interchange prize is a $ 500 k Third Party Agreement

Following week Game 2 of SOO and North v South , 2nd Rd of Round Robin tournament

Following week Game 3 of SOO and North and South , Final Rd of Round Robin tournament

Week 4 Winner of SOO plays Winner of Winner of North and South semi finals of Round Robin Tournament

Week 5 Australian and NZ teams picked and play Sunday , Round Robin GF , Test Matches between Tonga and Samoa , PNG v Fiji

Week 6 bye for all players and a Pacific Islands squad is chosen for the 4 Nations Tournament

Cmon Happy has nailed it , admit it

That sounds eerily similar to a proposal I put forward about 5 years back lol…
Great minds thinking alike?
It is the way to go.

I like to see 26 rounds of footy been played uninterrupted.
Representative footy has it's place, but it shouldn't be during the normal footy season.
Not sure what the answer is, but it can't stay as is. ( But propably will )

I think the answer is pretty simple leave it as it is and give all 16 Clubs 3 Bye Rounds equally .

The only thing not sure how the Broadcast rights will take it…..having 3 Weekends with no Footy ?

Players across the board will not dispute this , if you want to whinge about player burnout ? then make yourself unavailable for Rep games and let someone else pocket that $30,000 per game they get paid .

Read my plan FT

Every weekend you have 2 SOO games (Australia and NZ ) plus 8 Round Robin games

What more do you want ??

Shane Richardson you are not…dumbest plan ever...

Origin could be done in 10 days..Wed Sun Wed...with spilt Rounds either side...Origin Players unavailable for their Clubs...

The 3 week gap between Origins is ridiculous. Just puts the brakes on the whole middle part of the season and the season is divided into 3 parts as a result.

Yeah that's right , expect the elite players to play the three biggest games within 7 days

SOO is the pinnacle of our game and you want to turn it into a sideshow

Guessing Greenburg won't be messaging you anytime soon :brick:

I agree, this would be his greatest challenge. It would truly show his ability, to make something from nothing. I doubt it will ever happen
