Come on guys, things aren't free. You can't expect to get something broadcast into your living room without paying some sort of service charge. Would you prefer to sit through a few commercials (which really is just time to grab a new beer) or pay TV?
The AFL goes for longer and has more ad breaks, hence why it's worth more to the network.
Like it or hate it, the NRL is a product and it needs to be sold as such so that the players who go out there and risk dislocating hips to play this game, can get paid. If the product needs to be tweaked slightly to increase the competitiveness of the league, in turn retaining players and improving the product, then so be it.
Luckily, this year, a single FTA network won't be dictating the setup. The NRL will be able to weigh up several proposals and chose the best one for the game.
