NRL announces referee restructure
The National Rugby League has today advised of a leadership restructure for NRL refereeing which will see co-coaches Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper leave their positions.

The appointment of a new NRL Referees Elite Performance Manager will be made in coming weeks and will lead in turn to a restructuring of other senior positions.

Former Test referee Russell Smith will assume the role of Interim Manager of the NRL Referees Department and will assist the NRL General Manager of Football Operations, Mr Nathan McGuirk, in finalising the make-up of the 2013 squad.

Australian Rugby League Commission Interim Chief Executive, Mr Shane Mattiske, today thanked Bill and Stuart for their significant contribution to the squad and for the effort they had devoted to their positions:

“Bill has made an incredible contribution to refereeing in a career that will forever stand out in the game’s record books.

“He and Stuart have worked incredibly hard over the last two years in particular and there is a strong sense of gratitude on our part for their efforts, but we also believe that a new structure is needed.”

General Manager of Football Operations, Mr Nathan McGuirk, said that the restructured leadership team was seen as an important step forward:

“Bill and Stuart have been part of a dual coaching structure and it is time to move to a new model.

“Nobody could criticise their commitment but as we have reviewed the year from a number of perspectives it has become clear that we need one person to manage what is a high performance team.

“Bill and Stuart have increased the depth of talent in the squad and that has been one of the real positives over the last two years.

“I certainly wish to thank them for the contribution they have made.”

Looks like the door is open for one T.Sheens… One can only wonder at the exciting new concepts he can bring to the job.

Yep couldn't happen to a nicer guy!! Was, is, will always be an A-grade turkey

Terrific news, let's hope that the new Refs boss decides that we only need one on field ref and they get rid of Golden Point, watch the Pommy league and it's a better game with just the sole adjudicator and what's wrong with a game ending in a draw, an honorable result at the end of 80 minutes (cos we suck at winning Golden Point games!).

Just like the Tigers will benefit by our 10 year Coach moving on….so will the league ranks by ridding these 2 from the ranks...A fresh start is needed!

About time. Refs have been on the downhill slide with poor direction and "interpretations" from these two.

haha tim sheens as refs' boss.. next thing you know:

video refs as touchies, touchies as on field refs and on fields refs go to the box. #Sheenius

This pair should have fallen on their swords over the obstruction rule debacle, where it was revealed that no one understood the rule and that the Bulldogs had scored around ten tries during the season that should have been disallowed. No wonder they got the minor premiership!

The rules must be as simple as possible and be enforced consistently. the past three or four years have been 'interpretation on the run'. I actually think that Tim sheens would make a good ref boss as his former team got screwed so often by idiotic rulings such as the great obstruction vs the dogs and the inu double/ triple movement try that knocked us out in 2011.

Good riddance to Raper and Harrigan.

Im thinking this is a move in the right direction, but isnt going to fix much…

I think after 103 years we need to throw the Chapter of Rules in the bin and set up a committee to re-write the Rules so they are clearer!

FTR- sucked in Harrigan!

Nothing will change unless we make clear cut changes to the rules that make things as black and white (and gold) as possible

Spot on, when some decisions are left up to an officials interpretation, you will never get consistent decisions. I would also like to see one ref, referee the whole game with the pocket ref only controlling the 10 meters. You are the weakest link, Good Bye Harrigan…

Uh Oh just read who is the interim boss Mr Russell Smith

If we get 5 video refs calls in a game they could go to midnight

Wouldn't mind if he took so much time and got them all right but he still gets them wrong :brick:

Everything supposedly changes ,but really nothing changes
