Loaned Wests Tigers hooker Harry Grant will be in the Melbourne Storm purple next year.

Storm could not be any more definitive the emerging hooker, second in the Dally M by one vote after five rounds, would return to Melbourne at season’s end.

Grant, 22, has three years left to run on a contract with Melbourne that includes an opt-out should skipper Cameron Smith play on.

But the clause has no deadline and Storm — with the rights to both Grant and Brandon Smith — isn’t obligated to act for the sake of rivals’ salary-cap decisions.

Football director Frank Ponissi laughed off the latest round of speculation around Smith’s future.

“Cameron hasn’t indicated either way … probably the Harry situation has brought the discussion on more than it would at this stage of the season, being only June.”

Storm brokered the landmark swap arrangement with Wests so Grant could play NRL in 2020.

With Smith and New Zealand hooker Brandon Smith in Craig Bellamy’s top 17, the Rockhampton export would be starved of playing time.

Should record-collector Smith play on, Storm cannot rule out an overhaul of the line-up to make room for the “very different” rakes. Grant could play hooker and Smith move into the halves.

CHOOSE GREATNESS: CRONK’S GRANT CALL ROCKS TIGERS

– Fatima Kdouh

Cooper Cronk has warned Wests Tigers rookie revelation Harry Grant that his next career move could be the difference between him becoming an NRL great or a 100-game player.

The four-time premiership winner is adamant if he hadn’t landed at a club like the Melbourne Storm, he would not have been able to build a stellar 375-game NRL career.

And that spells bad news for the Tigers, who haven’t played finals football in almost a decade.

Just five games into his rookie season, Grant’s ascension has been stunning — the hooker is outright second on the Dally M leaderboard behind North Queensland’s Jason Taumalolo after seven rounds.

Grant is on loan at Wests from Melbourne, where uncertainty remains over the future of legendary hooker Cameron Smith and whether he’ll play on again in 2021.

Harry Grant should sign with the club that has the best coach and players, according to Cooper Cronk.
Harry Grant should sign with the club that has the best coach and players, according to Cooper Cronk.
According to Fox League expert commentator Cronk, if Grant is to fully reach his enormous potential, he should consider returning to the Storm even if Smith extends his record-breaking career.

“I’m happy to say on record that if I went to some other clubs I would have been a 100 or 150-gamer at best,” said Cronk, whose decorated career included four premierships with the Storm and Sydney Roosters, 38 international caps and 22 Origin appearances for Queensland.

“But because I landed at [some good clubs] particularly Melbourne Storm at first … the work ethic and the resources they gave me, I was able to achieve things I never thought were possible.

“For Harry Grant, if the situation comes up, find the club that you think is going to make you become a better person and footy player.”

Grant landed at the Tigers from Melbourne this season courtesy of a swap deal with outside back Paul Momirovski. He is contracted with the Storm until the end of 2022 and is seen as Smith’s successor, but it’s believed he can activate a get-out clause if the veteran hooker doesn’t hang up his boots.

“Frank Ponissi, the Melbourne Storm’s football director, has been quoted saying even if Cameron Smith goes around, Harry Grant will be coming back to the Storm. That’s a smart move on the Storm’s behalf,” Cronk said.

“What would my advice be to Harry Grant? He seems pretty comfortable at the Wests Tigers, he’s contributed to that team and have won a few games.

“But my advice to any young kid is, go to a club that is going to make you better than you think you can be.

“Through my career, the example that I have been a part of is good coaches, good clubs, good players can make you achieve greater things than you thought possible.”

Weighing heavily against the Tigers is the fact they haven’t played finals football since 2011. While in that time the Storm have won two premierships and three minor premierships, having not missed September football since 2010 when they played for no competition points as part of a salary cap penalty.

Grant has been a standout in the No. 9 jumper for Michael Maguire’s side. He trails Dally M leader Taumalolo (11 points) by just one point after playing just five games.

The 22-year old’s impressive performances have left Tigers fans hoping that Melbourne skipper Smith plays on beyond this season and urging their club to do whatever it takes to retain him.

But even if Smith plays on, history may be against them.

How are his comments disrespectful to us? He’s not our player.

Doesn't have to be to make a dig about the coaching structures at a club.
Yes he's also insulting whether our club can produce greats - whilst dismissing the accolades of RF - but he also makes mention of Harry going to a club that only improves his playing ability.

Well, how many greats have we produced? Marshall and Farah. And Marshall after 2012 regressed to just a decent first grader.

Would you consider him a club great?

Twist on words. No, but a great that the club helped produce.

Grant has captured the imagination of the competition in five games under Tigers head coach — and former Storm assistant — Michael Maguire.

Tedesco

Would you consider him a club great?

Twist on words. No, but a great that the club helped produce.

No doubt we helped, but he wouldn’t be at the level he’s at if he’d stayed. Would not have the premierships, endorsements or the reputation he has now.

So what...

You obviously aren’t understanding the context of my comment

Will the Storm be able to afford him is another matter. Yes he has a contract, but say he does somehow win the Dally M or come close, is he really going to stay on a 150-200k deal for another two years? His value would be 3-4 times that. They would have managed their cap and factored for him on his current salary, not three times that much.

Also if Vunivalu stays at the storm that's less money in their kitty

Well, how many greats have we produced? Marshall and Farah. And Marshall after 2012 regressed to just a decent first grader.

Despite the lack of success over the past decade or so, WT always and still has a good reputation for developing solid NRL players. Other than Ivan taking off and the ramifications from it - recruitment, retention and the club image etc.,- we still have overturned some of that. Robbie opposed Cam Smith, who'll go down as the game's best hooker and Benji Marshall's impact is responsible for the actual evolution of the game. They're pretty good accolades to me and I'll take(greats like that), over the way Smith earned his success.

Have no qualms about the advice, it’s pretty sound and all but the underlying message that only Melbourne can provide the best resources – in coaches and whatnot - is utter crap.
The Storm rorted the cap for years and to this day, continue to get leg ups from the NRL. I get they’re a successful club and all but it’s not all down to the administration and organisational performance. Leadership is what essentially has always helped push their success, from top to bottom (players).
Craig Bellamy’s standards and the type of players that were involved in the past decade or so, are what helped make them that. As of next year Bellamy will be gone and the same calibre of players Cronk played aside are no longer there, so why even include that argument?(Cronk not you).
It’s why NRL fans want to see a Panthers, Eels or Manly excel, so that the same two clubs aren’t there, year in year out.

Harry Grant is only with a club like us and IMO has proven he's destined for success.
I just feel the advice inadvertently takes any credit away from our ability(as a club) to develop top tier players which is totally false, because despite our success we've produced some great players.

My OWN advice to Harry is that he doesn’t need to ride any coattails and it's his own attitude and ability that will be take him to great heights, not the club he plays for.

Never ever ever ever..nope..

I have said it before in a post earlier that I was taken as a joke, but here it is..
If Harry wasn't at the WTs this year he would be third string D/H at Storm which would have meant very limited game time if any in the top 17 and probably going around each week at training with the squad..
He was given to us as a respected prospect for D/H at NRL level and we swapped him with Momo, they needed a centre we needed a D/H...
The experience and expertise at NRL level that he has been given by us, and by which I mean that the coaching and expertise given to him by Madge after every game to learn what is needed to better his game he would not have gotten at the Storm this year..
Its ok for Ponissi to blow wind up everybodies arse and say Harry will be wearing PURPLE NEXT YEAR is a sign of how arrogant the man is..granted he came to us on loan...His game and persona have been developed by us and this is the reason he is a DALLY M contender this year, here with us and not at the STORM..
WE TOOK HIM...WE HAVE DEVELOPED HIM AT NRL LEVEL not the Storm...
I completely understand he has to go back at some point, but he was third string at the Storm, we have made him the player he is at NRL level even as much to say he could be an origin contender...
As I said we have developed him and what you have is an NRL D/H coached by Madge, supported by the club and supported by our squad..

The only reason he will be back at Storm is if Cammy retires so they can have a back up to Brandon Smith because Bellamy promised the 9 to him not Harry...
Now they know how good Harry is thanks to Madge and the club they are spruiking how good he is,unfortunately they didn't have faith in him by putting B Smith first...

Lets offer Harry a good deal with third party endorsements (Triguboff now is the time) and throw a good deal at him where he goes to storm and says i want out lets see if storm want to keep a player who doesnt want to be with the club

Harry wanting to play for the Tigers beyond this year is all we need. If we make the finals and he forms strong bonds, everything else will get sorted. I really believe this.

We are not Parramatta and hope we never will be..nor should it be the standards we aspire too

The kid is class..I doubt he would even consider that route..Grant is in our system now ..lets just continue to impress him with that and see what happens..

He would have to do a Ryan Matterson to perhaps a bigger level to get out of his contract. If you want him to do that you have to be OK with how Ryan got out of his contract. I'm not saying what's right or wrong. I want him too but you can't have it both ways 😛

Geo we need to throw him the dollars hopefully it gets him over the line

He’s contracted for another 3 years. We could throw 5 million a year at him and it wouldn’t matter if Melbourne don’t release. After the way they handled JAC’s release request, don’t hold your breath. They know what they have with this kid.
