absolutely "the product" has ruined the game. V'Landys is the one who has done this.

It's a sport and a contest is the entertainment, a contest for the ball. Look at the NFL, they have a genuine contest for the ball on more plays than not, AFL, same thing.

When a comp is over 3-4 weeks in for most of the teams, he should address the bigger problems before he changed the rules for entertainment.

It needs to be thought of as a sport first, not entertainment. This is where he failed massively

What odds we have more changes coming next year.

Agree with entirely the contest for the ball is what is missing. Most ball games have this, it has been gradually eroded from rugby league in my opinion. Where do the NRL gome from here?

if there is no contest for etc ball, and it's not a game of attrition, what have we got left?

Touch football

Netball

Don't insult Netball, its a tough game.

agreed, and every pass can be a contest for possession.

I have been screaming about Peter V’s football on forums, social media and a barrage of emails to HQ since the start of the year.

It’s blow out after blow out and this is mainly because of a possession imbalance. In past years if you had 55% of the ball you would usually win no matter who you were playing. Now teams are getting 70% possession, so what hope do you have. It’s all about possession and momentum and that is controlled by the ref.

I said in a earlier post, if we continue with Peter Vs Mickey Mouse football maybe the team that scores needs to kick off in order to at least give their defence a rest.

The product we have now is woefull, but the NRL are not interested

The first two Storm tries were off blatant forward passes. Should have been WT possession instead of 12 points to Storm. And so it goes.....

Genuine contest for the ball in the NFL?

yes, well when its thrown and not run. It's a contest for the ball.

Not really, the average turnovers for game is 2.6. I hardly call that a contest for possession.

ok so they just run straight and the ball just gets passed to them?. Turnovers don't illustrate a contest for the ball.

Tell me where the contest for etc ball is in our game? ours is a game about errors and field position.

Even the Euros are better watching that the garbage we get served up every weekend

Turnovers include intercepts and fumbles, so there may appear to be a genuine contest for the ball, but in reality the defence is trying to disrupt the play and not gain possession.

All that doesn't really relate to what we are talking about anyway, just didn't think the NFL was a good example for a genuine contest for possession.

Rugby League hasn't had a contest for possession for 25 years, the new rules haven't changed that, just made it easier for the team with possession to keep the ball for longer.

Maybe we should go back to the unlimited tackle rule. 😉

You would need to allow striking in the ruck to get a genuine contest for possession.

Maybe they can put the ball in the middle of scrums again and have a genuine contest for the ball in the scrum as well. Then you would need real hookers rather than pseudo hookers.

Real hookers and real props.

The game has devolved to turnovers coming from errors. It really pisses me off to hear crowds cheering because someone has dropped the ball, or to see teams high-fiving because an opponent failed to play the ball properly (whoopee) . Apart from the strip, there is really no contest for the ball.

Both the scrum and the play-the-ball were once contests and I wouldn't mind to see that reinstated in our game.

Yep, I know, scrum penalties were a lottery. But let's face it, so are 6 agains.

Remember 1988 at Leichhardt Oval, Tigers kick the ball into touch 1 metre out from the tryline. Benny and his massive pack were a better than 55% chance of winning the ball against the head and feed. Tigers backline set for an attacking raid, defending team preparing for an onslaught, crowd going crazy with anticipation. If the Tigers win the scrum there's a sweeping backline move towards the opposite corner. If they lose the scrum, the opposition runs it out into a deep backline set to attack and launch their own raid against a desperately reorganising defence. Everyone in the crowd on their feet.
You can't tell me the game has gotten better.

That never happened though. A Ryan coached side having a deep backline when the other team had the feed.

PVL has created the most boring, unentertaining version of rugby league I've ever seen. Shifting momentum when you're behind is extremely difficult, refs dictate games more than ever, injuries and concussions at an all time high, players getting sin binned and sent off for ridiculous reasons, more blowouts than ever and the most one sided competition EVER.

He also sold the TV rights off for way less than normal and is completely unorganised for the NRLW season. Bloke has absolutely no clue and I never wanted him from the very start. His new rules are a complete FAILURE

Raising the faults of a referee seems to come across as whinging. But when it happens with such regularity, it's beyond frustrating. The 50/50 calls almost always go against us and other lower placed clubs. 6 agains are always lopsided, forward passes, the list goes on....Its also really annoying that some of our own forum members seem to dislike either players or the coach so much that they'd rather turn a blind eye to blatant crap calls and officiating and hang crap on our own. I can handle the likes of Braith, Ikin, Fittler, Johns etc. ignoring the obvious dubious decisions, but fans of a club should never put up with being reffed out of contention or Suspended for longer periods than others at other clubs etc. And this crap seems never ending. Vlandys and his rule changes have completely ruined the spectacle of the game. Crowd numbers will drop. Merch will drop. And tv ratings will drop. So his grand idea of making the game safer will eventually result in fewer kids playing because their parents lose interest. He'll move on and never look back. Gus Gould was a major backer of Vlandys when he was looking at taking on the gig. But I think he's kicking himself now.

momentum is the only issue i see, i liked the 6 again last year.

Not a fan of the 'highshot crackdown' especially on the falling players.

Fix the momentum by team that scores a try kicks off

You are 100% right about the refs, it so obvious the lesser teams are not getting the rub of the green when it comes to ref calls…it’s so obviously you can conclude it’s deliberate!!

**Fix the momentum by team that scores a try kicks off**

Nicho Hynes would have worn out his boot kicking for goals and then kicking off.

Never been more disinterested in footy in my life.

New rules have created a huge divide between the top clubs and the rest of the comp. Look at the ladder, 4 team comp and everyone else sucks.

Outside of watching your own team have a big win, no contest matches are not entertaining. I feel like any footy fan would much rather see a good close game where either team can win than a pumping

6 again and the current use of the sin bin are ruining the game

Vlandys simply put the cart before the horse. The changes made with the 6 again has made it hard for teams to scrap and fight to keep themselves in games. Once momentum is lost usually by a better team points are conceded quickly. The average team struggles to score enough and gets blown out. Now with the head high crackdown defences are submissive and can’t stop good teams with superior ball runners.

You can lock in the top and bottom teams for 5 years now. There’s no quick rebuild as getting to the level no Panthers or Storm will take a decade. It won’t be done by recruitment solely but mainly junior development.

What he has done is take an unbalanced league and shine a spotlight on the years of roster mis management and lack of development for some teams.

They have destroyed the league as its an elitist mentality. There will always be battlers but they should all be able to compete to some level with any team on any given day. Now it’s not happening at all.

If Wests Tigers were leading the Comp we’d all be loving the new rules. At least the majority would. Shoot the arrows at the right target.

It's not even about that for me - I've never been less interested In neutral games. Majority of games are decided 20 minutes in and favourites are winning 99% of the time

Don't know your age but i'm 68 and played a fair bit of reasonable quality football and what you say is so true. I can't stand players high fiving when some one has made a mistake. Every footballer makes a mistake but to be belittled for it in my day would have been a target on your head.

Spot on mate.

I'm the same age as you. Played juniors in the Newtown area but didn't have enough talent to carry on much beyond school age.

10 minutes into the Newcastle game I was confident of a win because, for a change, it seemed like the ref was favouring us. You get so used to being on the receiving end it becomes quite obvious when someone else is about to get touched up. I wonder how the Cowboys fans felt all those years they got Gyped.
