Hastings on the bench to take out DCE

is this effective immediately?

The deal will see Hastings join Wests Tigers at the start of the 2022 NRL season and remain with the club until at least the end of 2023.

You get the feeling dominoes will fall into place and we’ll end up with him this year though

I’m all for improving the roster but not sold on Hastings ..
Just wish Brooks would step up .. especially with his kicking game ..
Time will tell ..

Chammas saying on inside the NRL, not sure on exact figure but would be in the $400k-$500k bracket.

Sowards opinion is Jackson coming to play in the halves and he (Soward) wouldn't be moving AD from 5/8.

I really wouldn't be surprised to see Hastings in the 7 jumper. I'm hoping this talk of him being a utility is just a cover up so brooks doesn't lose all his confidence. Brooks would actually be a good 14 to be honest

With Doueihi and Hastings you would have the slowest halves combination in the NRL.

If halves do there job and the rest of the side supports them they only have to be quick in the minds not their feet.
How quick do you think the best half in the game is right now?

Your backline is only as fast as your slowest back .....bloody hell you could have used a sundial to time some of our backlines over the years

I’m confused, does that include the 7 and 6? Coz we know Brooks is one of the quickest but we also know your far from a fan.
Which side are you siting on. Brooks or Hastings for 7?

I have no idea how recent these figures are.

The Tigers biggest weakness is defence so I would use the best middle defender I could find as a lock.
The Tiger forwards are not making as many meters as the top forwards in the comp so we also need a lock that can make meters as a battering ram to make up for that.

Average running meters per game (middle forwards)
Payne Haas 163
David Klemmer 160
James Fisher-Harris 141
Thomas Burgess 149
Josh Aloiai 147
Paul Vaughn 141
Josh Papalii 141

Zane Musgrove 106
Alex Twal 104
Joe Ofahengaue 103
James Tamou 78
Stefano Utoikamanu 76
Thomas Mikale 59

I have no problem with getting Hastings as a backup half or to play lock if in future if we fix our defence and our forwards make a lot more metres.

There is no way Hastings is bigger than Murray or Radley, not even close.

Hastings to leave Wigan
19 April 2021
Loch Lomond Whiskies Competition - April 2021
Wigan Warriors can confirm that Jackson Hastings will leave the Club at the end of the 2021 season.

Hastings will join NRL side Wests Tigers for 2022 and 2023.

Wigan Warriors executive director, Kris Radlinski, said: “Jackson asked to see me on Sunday morning where he informed me that he has agreed a two-year deal in the NRL and will leave at the end of 2021 when his contract expires.

“There has been much speculation about an immediate exit, but I have had written assurances from his management team and through my relationship with Michael Maguire, 2021 was never an option.

“**During my conversation, Jackson was incredibly humble and said he feels honoured to have represented the Club. I could see it in his eyes that he wants to leave Wigan a winner.

“We have never doubted his commitment as a Rugby League player. He brings an outstanding attitude to training every day and plays his heart out every week on the playing field.

“Wests Tigers are getting a player who is deeply motivated to succeed and will drive the rest of the playing squad.”**

Hastings said: “I am extremely grateful to Ian Lenagan and Kris Radlinski and Adrian Lam to represent this great Club.

“Over the last 15 months I’ve really appreciated being part of such an historic place and the expectations that come along with that.

“Kris and I have spoken at length about what the future holds. Having such a great relationship with him, the door is open if an opportunity arises in the future.

“I’m really grateful to all the fans for putting up with the rumours and speculation. I have given everything I have to the jersey and I will continue to do that for the rest of this year. I am an extremely driven individual that’s super committed to bringing success to Wigan in 2021.

“Now this is out of the way, I just want to get on with playing Rugby League. I am solely focused on 2021 and the goal we have as a Club for this year.

“Once again, I would like to say thank you to the Wigan fans for the constant support and I can’t wait to see them all back in the stands.”

I have a really bad feeling about this. I think it will be a very poor signing and also could undo a lot of the hard work the club has done.

For everyone that boasts "But he won the Man of Steel", I remind them that before he was run out of the NRL for being and pleasant to be around, in 3.5 years he played 37 games.

If he was any good, his off field personailty wouldnt have mattered.

I hope to be proved wrong.

It's interesting that he is perceived to be a 7 when the majority of his NRL games for both the Roosters and Manly were off the Bench as a utility..

At the Roosters he had Pearce and Maloney ahead of him and Manly had DCE and Green so he only ever started in 6 of 47 games in total..all the rest off the bench..

I feel that's the reason he has been signed here..

exactly kind of to replace the Mmbye role not to replace Brooks

Thats not actually correct. In 2016 he played 11 games for the Roosters at 7 and 4 games at 6. Coincidentally (or not) they came 15th that year.

Thanks for sharing. Seems that Wigan fans are happy for Jackson and saying that they couldn't of asked more from him while playing at Wigan.
Good endorsement

Wow, it actually happened. Normally I would be excited for a signing like this, but we have been burned so many times in the past it's hard to feel emotion for it.

Hopefully he's coming to play lock. Would love to see Brooks on the left, Hastings in the middle and Doueihi on the right in attack. Would give us attack from all angles and another kicking option. His short kicking game is great.

The Wigan boss couldn’t have spoken more highly of him and their fans agree.
On the other side of the coin you have people on here who don’t really know him (or say they went to school with him God knows how many years ago) saying what a mongrel he is and how on earth would we want ‘someone like him’.
Well, I want to give ‘someone like him’ a go because he is talented, plays his guts out and hates losing ... every week.
He won’t be on massive coin so what’s to lose?
Everyone putting crap on him getting the Man of Steel are ridiculous ... he was voted the BEST player in Super League.
Would they prefer if he was voted the worst?
Also nobody seems to mention he is also an international having made the Great Britain team.
Welcome to the Tigers Jackson.

Tamou had no idea about the Hastings news when asked on Monday, but he was happy to hear about the half’s pending arrival.

“I think that is great for the club moving forward,” Tamou said.

“Jackson has gone really well over in the Super League in the last couple of years.

“Obviously coming through the Roosters juniors, he has definitely got something there that I think will be important to this club.

“Having those couple of years of experience over in the Super League will be important to him, and just to bring his attacking prowess to this team will be important.”

Can Tamou, our captain, tell us what "coming thorugh the Roosters juniors" has to do with Hastings' benefit to WT?

He's (Tamou) been here 5 minutes and already feels safe to make comparisons with the Roosters systems and those of WT. Seriously?

I concur, Tamou needs to display more skills than jumping pulling and dressing gown modelling on the sideline before waving lyrical about the Roosters system (he’s never experienced it).
Hastings does not have the speed of Brooks but he has the mongrel and game management that will save Madge’s career - Douhe is safe but Brooks is not, Hastings is here to run the side at halfback and he’ll provide the leadership and toughness that was bestowed upon Brooks when was remunerated his mega salary!
Let’s not upset the apple cart for this season - I love the fairy tale about Hastings playing lock - it’s so fanciful and a little bit naughty but I’m going to derive so much pleasure watching Madge handle Brooks with a poker face .. the writing is on the wall (so big you can see it from space).... after 8 seasons of half-hearted plays, rubbish kicking game, lack of urgency all deflected at Benji and Reynolds it’s time to realise Brooks does not have the skills required.
Brooks: “You are the Weakest Link - Goodbye”

Do you write fiction professionally or is it just a hobby?

I don’t see us releasing brooks at all. I’m guessing mybe won’t be here next here and we will be paying at least half of his salary. If we lose brooks we would be paying about the same. Let’s just estimate that at around 800k. Do we really think paying 2 players to play against us while taking up 800k of our cap for next year is a good idea? Especially since Hastings is not a better halfback than brooks!

Hastings will play lock of the bench. Also good depth signing. Hopefully paid cheapies for him.

Chammas saying on inside the NRL, not sure on exact figure but would be in the $400k-$500k bracket.

Sowards opinion is Jackson coming to play in the halves and he (Soward) wouldn't be moving AD from 5/8.

If those numbers are accurate this is an intense failure of a signing. Disgusting numbers honestly. Jackson Hastings has never been an NRL starter and has done nothing to indicate he should be on that type of money. I have no real argument to suggest that he would produce any greater than Billy Walters, Jock Madden or even Zach Docker-Clay honestly. That has to be made up surely. I would value him half that. Unless they're saying $400-500k on two years with a team option.

The man of steel won't come here to get paid $200k.... halfbacks are at a premium too. $400k seems about right, we've got plenty of cap space it'll be a short deal don't stress about it

There are so many factors to consider and one that is far more important than people realise is what continuing to make signings like this says about our club. If we keep picking up players with bad reputations who are unwanted elsewhere or players who are perceived that way perception becomes reality and it just affirms what people think about us.

Just wait, once this signing is made it won't be "Tigers land coup signing star from ESL" it will be "Desperate Tigers throw NRL lifeline to outcast badboy". And no matter what anyone thinks that stuff affects us at every level. Then the pressure is on Jackson to prove that wrong because if he is even remotely unsuccessful it'll be mocked relentlessly much like our signing of BJ Leilua or James Roberts is being. And it all contributes to all and sundry from the media, to fans, to other players considering our club a desperate joke.

This to me was the post of the day. Apparently we were frontrunners for his signature. More like we were the only runners for his signature. That some of our supporters seems satisfied with his signature is a good indication of how low expectations are at WTs. We need NRL signings of far higher standard than Hastings. The number of squaddies on the forum yesterday morning to monitor the reaction and the PR promotion accompanying the signing is an indication to me of how nervous some in the WTs are about Hastings. Based on his history, that is warranted.

Welcome to the club Jackson.

I hope he goes well regardless of what position he plays, because I’m getting bored of seeing our team finish in the bottom 8, constantly getting smashed by dud ref calls and reading the same comments day in day out about how bad one player is or how good another is in a team sport that requires an entire team to perform at at least 80% or more to win consistently.
