WESTS Tigers will release fullback Wade McKinnon from the final year of his contract to take up a lucrative English deal, **in a move that appears to ensure Tim Moltzen will remain with the club until the end of next season at least.**
The Tigers are likely to announce within days that they will allow McKinnon, who joined the club halfway through last season - ironically as a result of Moltzen's season-ending knee injury - to take up a three-year deal with Hull FC.
McKinnon was contracted until the end of next season, but it is understood the Tigers will not stand in the 30-year-old's way, given the length of the deal. Which means Moltzen, who has professed a desire to play fullback in the long term, will likely see out his deal with the club after talk he had been the subject of some interest from elsewhere.
South Sydney **had** considered Moltzen a possible option at halfback, having lost Chris Sandow to Parramatta, and there were suggestions Moltzen might request a release from his own deal to secure a longer-term and more lucrative deal. **The Rabbitohs have since decided** to show faith in their young halves, particularly the talented Adam Reynolds.
But McKinnon's new deal will likely have a positive outcome for all parties; the former Rabbitoh and Warrior can take up a profitable final contract and Moltzen can play his preferred position at the club he wants to play with.
That should have positive ramifications for star playmaker Benji Marshall, too. Marshall lives with Moltzen and the Tigers would be wary of causing any friction with their five-eighth by unsettling his good friend. There have been suggestions recently the club would be prepared to part ways with popular and long-term players Bryce Gibbs and Liam Fulton.
The Tigers' coaching staff has also been targetted by Super League. Assistant coach Peter Gentle, also Sheens's right-hand man at Test level, has met with officials from Salford, who are looking for a coach to replace Shaun McRae.
It is believed, though, that Tigers officials are not willing to release Gentle this season. As McRae was forced to quit the club as a result of ill health earlier this month and Salford had installed a caretaker coach, the club would prefer a coach who could start almost immediately. If Salford are happy for Gentle to start after the NRL season, Super League might have its next Australian coach.
