@Lauren I'm not too concerned if people don't sing, as long as they don't make it a political issue beforehand. I'm sure plenty of players stay silent as they prefer to soak up the moment. However, imagine the furore the white players in the All Blacks would cause if they refused to do the haka?

I couldn't care less who sings or doesn't sing the anthem. Probably because I am the most unpatriotic person around, but that's another topic.

The issue I have is that no one cared about any of these kinds of protests till Kapernick started taking a knee. They might have had issues, but none had the guts (or brains) to do anything about it. Someone else had to do it for them. Now they ride his coattails, trying to pass it off as originality. Just like Canberra fans ripping off the Viking clap.

I actually respect each and every person's view on this forum and wanted to point out the message I get from them, is inclusiveness. So who are we to tell anyone what their place is in this world/country?.
I also wish these type of topics/threads were somewhat restricted or moderated, as it has the potential to cause a lot of unnecessary upset.

I'm a big girl and actually appreciate those responding and sharing their POV. Your passion as footy fans shines through, if anything.

That's a bit silly isn't it? The concept of "Australia" isn't some all-in deal, you can take and leave the bits you don't like. You don't have to love the flag, love the anthem, love the food, love the surf, love bogans, love beer to love the country.

don't get me wrong everyone has the right to say their piece....but don't get shirty when others say their bit that doesn't coincide with your own view.....not aimed at you formerguest.....generally speaking there is a moral thought that says everyone should think a certain way, and the people that think otherwise whatever the discussion have issues and are intolerant/ignorant

Good healthy debate and discussion are everybody's right without being pilloried about it

I am a staunch republican so back in the dim dark past when "God save Betty Windsor" was the national anthem i wouldnt sing it because it did not reflect my values.So i can understand different peoples point of view on the subject

Definitely. Ironically, being part of my particular demographic, I am often the one that has been attacked by my own for not conforming, but I was never comfortable with calling people "wogs, chinks, black bastard or [This word has been automatically removed]" etcetera from a young age and well remember the male backlash following the establishment of the Family Court.

We are all a product of our upbringing to a certain extent, so I can understand that it is hard for some to move with the times, but with this thread being about about games between Australia, New Zealand and Polynesian nations, including indigenous players on both sides of the Tasman, rascism is still likely to be playing a role for some in their responses on nationalistic issues. Sure, it is not at the levels it used to be, and not aimed at you, but anyone pretending that it is not still occurring is doing so for their own purposes. That many of those same people are also attacking a strong young Swedish girl is most worrying to me, as for mine it shows just how entrenched views are.
