Isaiah Papali’i #265

Player kicks stones because they want to play for a better team for more money and ultimately breaks contract early. Seems pretty similar.
Difference being that they had, within the (daft) rules, signed a contract with Parra/Manly for a future period. The issue is with them muckraking to bring the start date forward.
Papali'i literally only has one contract in the future. There should be no conjecture whatsoever until November 1 2024.

Matto and Aloiai already set the precedent. This isn’t a new thing.
This actually is new thing and set a number of issues the NRL should stamp out.

For starters this allows a player to sign a contract to use as a bargaining chip with their current club, it will allow players to use the lower placed teams as leverage in their negotiations.

Secondly, it would allow players and power clubs to use lower club as insurance against injury, sign with the lower club 18 months out and play through the season, if the player gets injured it is the lower team that gets the damaged goods, if not then they renege and sign with their preferred club.

Both the above situations make a mockery of the NRL and would ensure lower placed teams are nailed to the bottom of the ladder.

My gut feeling is that we are looking to secure Schuster, if that happens Papalii will be released. Then we have to hope and prey Schuster will work hard on himself and his game, and also be willing to play backrow. Just a feeling that this is going on on the background.

I agree, I think Schuster is pretty close to being done and we let Paps go

My thinking is that few players outside WT try to wriggle out of contracts. There have been a few players let go early by their clubs recently but they seem to have been by mutual agreement. If we decide to finally show some courage Paps won't have a leg to stand on, excuses or not.
Mate I hope you are right but it seems that clubs dont want to sign players who don't want to play for them, and no one will support making a player of that calibre sit out. It's a real catch 22 we need these type of players to improve our team but getting them when they have better options and changing the perception of the club is falling on deaf ears.

What a farce...

If Eels want him, they match his 650k contract themselves and then on top pay out our 650k to us for the next 3 years off our cap.

Would never happen but I'm sure we get some money to go towards some new training gear instead...

They should be working on Schuster to come with Paps, not instead of him, there should be no legal loophole for Paps to renege, the NRL should be made aware of what Parra are doing, but we all know how this club operates. If we pulled this on Parra, they would be straight to the NRL

Rumour has it there is now an Eels contract on the table.

This is going to get messy in the off season. He clearly doesn’t want to come. You just don’t say these types of things if you are planning on honouring your contract.
