Isaiah Papali’i #265

Yep sit him out or He comes in and joins us like a man who signed a deal under no pressure , he was low balled by his current club he should be happy to move on to Black White and Orange pastures , I don’t think the NRL or players association will back him to play for Parra , a move back to NZ maybe but it would be for the 3 years and plenty for us in return , maybe they hook us up with Roger for 3 years

If we ignore the will he/won't he - he clearly would prefer to not come here.

That alone is a worry.

So we can do all this staunch 'oh well he signed a contract he can take our money and sit it out' song and dance, but he won't be comitted. And thats cap space we shouldn't waste.

The clubs hand will be forced.

Send him to play for Campbelltown Eagles
Why don't Wests Tigers, i,e, Pascoe, Sheens and Lee H report and strongly complain about his silly attitude NOW, not later. The longer Wests Tigers leave it the very much worse it will be for Wests Tigers. Show a bit of steel for Wests Tigers supporters at least. We are sick of being dragged through the rubbish at every chance.

Salary cap space not wasted to make him sit out if we cannot find a decent replacement anyhow...

Stupid question but does the money come off our cap if Papalii sits out the 3 years. We end up getting screwed both ways if it does.
Interesting question - i would imagine we would have to apply for an exemption which would put the NRL in a bit of a bind. If they believe that contracts signed, sealed and registered by them should be honoured by the player then they would have to give the exemption. On the other hand the RLPA would come down hard on them to allow a club to sit a player out for 3 years with no pay and be able to use that money elsewhere. Personally i believe they would have to give the exemption or it just makes a mockery of their whole contract system.

Bottom line is it is fairly obvious he does not want to come.

It is not Parramatta also...it is NZ.

You don't need to be Einstein to work out the multiple fluff pieces in today's media about his partner have been released to set up the whole "lovebirds want to be together / denied for years by covid"...she has said she can't leave NZ.

This has nothing to do with Parra.

Will place us in a very tough spot...basically his camp are going to run the whole "just want to be together / start a family / family is everything" line.

Personally, I'd be proactive and tell NZ they can have him but we want a massive bounty.

Curran + the choice of two of their best junior outside backs.

100% all set up for him to apply to go back to NZ Parra have moved on
We will lose him to NZ "just want to start a family etc"

If we pay him, whether he plays or not, that would be money off the cap. I must admit he's carried on with this garbage longer than I thought he would. He is now seriously disrespecting the club. The are two reasons why I think we'll play hardball this time where we didn't with Moses, Matterson, Aloiai etc, the first is Sheens. Sheens is a tough man and won't allow himself to be stood over by the media, a player or a manager. The second is our credibility. Despite what's gone on in the past, if we let Pap go this time, we could never be confident again that a player who signs will actually come. Why woiuldn't players sign with WT and then say to other clubs "if you want me to renege on the WT deal, you'll need to pay me more than the WT contract".

Yeah that does look like the plan. The whole "wait until after the GF, my manager will sit down and work things out" line is fairly obvious....

Sit down and work out what? They already signed a deal.

The only thing they can possibly try and "sit down and work out" then is an exit strategy.

I agree with all that...but 3 years sitting out / disgruntled / essentially means we would be down a backrower AND have 650-700 grand of our cap taken up (yes, the money will count).

I'd probably be on the phone personally with NZ and say "Curran + two of your best outside backs" and we get this done.

This is, yet another, classic example of how far in the dark ages the NRL is stuck.

The AFL miles and miles ahead. We could trade him for topliners and picks under the AFL system easily.

Too many OB's here already.....
I'd be going Curran - Murchie is Available anyhow - I'd go him as well...
And Afoa or someone like that....

See this is where the nrl need to step in and say no you can either honour contract or sit out the 3years and 1 more as a penalty for making the nrl contracts a joke and not included in our cap.

We all saw the "compassionate grounds" bit coming..having said that, his partner is 36 and at the very tail end of her career,so most couples in this situation wld simply accept reality plus the fact hes making $600k pa and she shld join him over here.
That wld be normal behaviour, and he knew all the above when he signed...theres nothing new
Personally,Id definitely stand him down to set a new norm for WTs and draw a definitive line in the sand, and possibly at the end of the first year Id maybe give him an option to buy out the last 2 years of his contract
Our Chairman does this stuff for a living and is better placed than any of us on these matters, tho when it comes to footy IQ...?
Having said that.. whatever we do,DONT let IP off the hook without major pain to his wallet and reputation as a deterrent to others going forward
