Maguire not shying away from ladder position

Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire said a lack of pressure was the undoing in his side's 30-18 defeat to the Parramatta Eels at Bankwest Stadium on Sunday.

After controlling the match for the best part of the first 25 minutes, Maguire's side fell behind to two quick tries before the break and were unable to truly recover despite a second half double to David Nofoaluma and several other good chances.

Maguire, and veteran Benji Marshall, said it was simple errors that continued to rob the side of a chance to build pressure and come away with the two points.

"We certainly have a bit to work on, I know that," Maguire said post-match.

"One thing about this group is that they try, but we need to be more diligent around certain areas of the game. We had a lot of errors and we didn't apply pressure.

"Unfortunately, that just puts pressure on yourself [and] if you keep doing that, you'll end up like it was on the scoreboard."

Marshall addresses Bankwest Stadium after his 300th match

Off the back of his 300th NRL game, Marshall echoed the coach's sentiments.

"Our group does try but there are a lot of things we’ve got to work on," he said.

"Especially on a day like today, it was hard to celebrate because I want to win and make the finals. Today was special but I would rather have got the result.

“As a leader in this group, part of me wants to make sure we do that and that didn’t happen today, Simple errors cost us a lot and then we’re chasing the game at the back end, and I think we're a better team when we're in the fight."

Sunday's loss leaves Wests Tigers just one win outside the top eight with a tough fortnight of away matches coming up — a trip to the nation's capital this Saturday to take on Canberra is followed by a journey up to Newcastle in Round 19.

Maguire said it was getting close to "must-win" territory for his team.

"It is getting close to that [time] and the players know that, so it's going to be about how we go about this week and roll on in to the next game," he said.

"We're aware of where we are on the ladder, but we've got to make sure that we get out and do all the little things because it will turn.

"We're a very capable team this group — I've got a lot of belief around this group, as I've said many times, because I've seen a change as we've gone throughout this season. They've just got to make sure that they believe now.

"Sometimes it's not all the stuff you see on the field, it's the leadership things that they're showing. They're changing the character of who they are and those sort of things are the things that are going to take this team and club forward."

G'day @The_Patriot: I don't remember having had the pleasure of corresponding with you before this, but here goes.
Now c'mon mate it's not really as bad as that.
We are a crap team, but we aren't as crap as a couple of others at least. And you know something, crap doesn't always go down the sewer, does it? When you take your tiger or dog or both for a walk and it does a crap on the footpath, you pick it up, don't you? and it then gets recycled, doesn't it?
Well that's what is going to happen to Our Wests Tigers, isn't it?
I reckon by the time next season starts Our juniors will have improved to NRL standard with the aid of some great coaching by Madge, and I'm sure We will pick up some top line NRL players along the way.
I don't follow AFL but a mate of mine follows Carlton. They were at or near the top for a few years a while ago, but the last 3 or 4 years they have been crap. He also follows Arsenal in the English soccer. They to were flying high for a few years, but now their not. Carlton will rise again, so to will Arsenal and SO WILL WE The-Patriot.
The pitcher is about to throw the ball The -Patriot, and we are going to hit that ball for a home run, cheers :v: :relaxed:

It all comes down to having too many players that are crap

It’s over ...
Just enjoy a stress free final series or find another interest or hobbie !

@avocadoontoast Playing Benji next year is conceding defeat in trying to make the finals.

A brand new spine is needed. Brooks should move to 5/8

100% agree, the great Robbie and Benji show is going to miss the 8 again, no surprise there, time to move forward not backwards

Bagging other teams crap players..u see the Donks and Wobblers GP FG shoot out..hilarious

@TheDaBoss Madge knows how to talk ... maybe he could come up with a few moves instead of Brooks to Rowdy 5 times a game and 5 hit ups and kick to the fullback ..to much talk from the coach IMO !

Hey Magpies1963. I appreciate your way with words and metaphorical reasoning.

Usually id be positive at this stage. I have been recently but i just cant shake the fact that most of this squad just go to water when the pressure is on.

We have a culture issue that needs addressing, no amount of tactical coaching will turn around a guy who has no pride in his performance.

Those two Bankwest games against the Eels were two of our biggest moments in recent history. On both occasions we hardly even raised a sweat and our execution was lack luster and downright apathetic.

Maguire has a job on his hands.

@The_Patriot Amen brother. There is definitely something there that’s a mystery. This club has a history of underperforming and underachievement.
I am usually much more positive about things but this last performance has really got to me. If I was Madge I’d be tearing strips of them. Not one player bar the two halves and maybe Mikaele showed anything approaching first grade standard. And where has the form of players such as Twal and Matherson gone?

is it just me, or has Twal been not his best lately..... he has been good..... but ik that he can be much better, and in the Eels game he was a bit flat

Give the guy a break. Made 48 tackles yesterday and didn't miss one.

Cannon fodder even if we did jag 8th

Yeah.

It's not really a gift to make it if we're just prolonging the inevitable by a week.

Well we’re not going to win the comp that’s for sure but even if it’s just for pride, or even to stop being the punchline for every finals joke, it would be so nice to play a final - just one.

You never know what can happen in finals. Nobody would have thought the Dragons would put the Broncos to the sword at Suncorp last year.
Unfortunately for us, we won't find out how we would go this year either as we won't be there.
