'it's not about winning or losing, it's about being around g

I agree LaT.

I think benji has been mis-interpreted here. When he said "it's not about winning or losing" I don't think he meant he didn't care about winning, i took it to mean that he enjoys playing with the current players and the way the club has handled the situation has been poor. There is such things as decency, honour and respect in the way you deal with people that goes beyond winning and losing. I think Benji was showing that he was loyal to his friends and stating that they have been treated rather shabbily.

I respect him more for that than someone who couldn't give a stuff about his mates

The Storm comparrisson is an interesting one actually.

They lose a lot of players and have done since the salary cap scandal. They don't sit back and whine, they get on with their jobs and still maintain extremely close ties with all of their mates who have moved elsewhere. The distance they have moved is sizeable as well.

Wests Tigers? Well we are still bemoaning the loss of Gibbs who moved 30km down the road and who they see every other day anyway. So in essence they are having a sook that they don't get paid to hang out with their mate. Quite frankly they can take that attitude and pack it off to a new club, Benji included if he wants to keep going.

Football is a business, not the Beuna Vista Social Club

Spot on smeg , we want players to play for the club and themselves , and if somebody leave wish him luck tell him the extra cash will be good for him and then welcome the new bloke , we also need to get the new signing into tigers colours the day after grandfinal , get there heads on the club web site and have a major announcement on tv showing of these new buys , anasta , thompson , pettybourne , all standing with farrah , benji , humpty , and the coach ,

yep, punt them all so we can get more professionals like blair to the club.

that turned out great.

benji is just saying what he feels.

Of course not, team harmony is extremely important

However it's not as if they are signing Osama bin laden or adolf hitler to replace them. I'm sure they can be mates with the new guys too

Wholeheartedly agree with the second point, disappointing to see none of the remaining player group mention that while their good mates are leaving, new players will come and have their own positive influence on the team's morale.

Whilst i don't disagree footy IS about winning, i also think it was not really his point. He wasn't happy with the WAY it has been handled. Neither am i, and nor should any other supporter. If you want to let a player go, fine, if you want to keep a player ….again fine, but for some unkown reason , the last couple of years we have a horrible way of letting players go. I.E "here mate, we want you to be a Tiger for life" closely followed by, "you have permission to negotiate elswhere"

For those saying it's business etc, yep it sure is, so if/when Farah makes his business decision to join the Eels i hope nobody runs out the loyalty card, that would be a little hypocritical.

I'm thinking the players thought our hearts would go out to them. I think most of us realized why we fail in big games, too soft. Why didn't this passion or desire for your mates be on show ON THE FIELD.

Blair has had a miserable season, no doubt, but he is more professional than most of our roster.

oh really.
do tell what he has done.

giving away dumb penalties isn't professional.

Yes, the most important thing about a pro footy club is winning games, making the finals with the main goal being to win the GF and a premiership. But a team without a culture that is not bonded will not succeed in this. It is far from an individual sport, and requires chemistry within the team to pull off being a great side.
Benji did make it out as though the 'mates' thing was most important, it is certainly an important part of a foundation of the club.
Shown through Bryce and Fifita saying they love Cronulla because of the 'chemistry', its an important factor when contributing to the main goal of winning.

Benji, Beau, Heighington and other players better remember that without the fans there is no Wests Tigers.

I love Benji but that was a crap response. And Beau the sook…After that interview, i'm glad he's gone!

The club needs a culture change so they're biting the bullet after a crap year.

Tiger 4 life.

Totally agree with LaT on this one … If a bunch of blokes don't enjoy being around each other they aren't going to win a damn thing.
Benji has always been a free spirit on the footy field and his comment about winning or losing reflect this freedom ... If he was hung up on the destination it would ruin his journey... And he'd be little more than a park footballer. The beauty of Benji Marshall or Ben Barba or Billy Slater or even back to Phil Blake etc is they aren't afraid to fail. Seems many here would prefer a robotic set of six finished off by a nicely waited kick into the corner ...degree of difficulty very low. Maybe Warren Ryan should be the new coach ... He knows how to eek out a desperately boring 7-6 GF victory.
Nah, as surprising as this may be to the miserable bean counters of the world, footy is about more than winning and losing.
WELL SAID BENJI

Yep I remember all the dragons fans after the 2010 grand final lamenting their boring style of play. Sure we were celebrating mad Monday but hey, at least we are exciting!!!

The players having talent and the players being mates both have a place in a successful team..
Coaches on the other hand may not win games but can lose them with their decisions
(we all know this too well)
The only new voice since 05 was Folkes and it was no coincidence that we finished top 4\. I can only dream to think what we would have have done in 2012 with him as head coach. However the management were happy to go with sheens again and got another poor year. unfortunately there is no review or authority to review the management that culls players for a coach and then gets negative feedback and goes to sack the coach and no doubt will beg players to stay. It is a disgrace

Fergs … Life is poetry dude ... Want to read Bob Ellis' account of Test Cricket in the 60s when he says any Aussie with any semblance of joy in their hearts cheered Garfield Sobers Windies team up against our own bunch of cynical, straight batters led by Bill 'bean counter' Lawry.
Or recall the famous quote delivered by the French rugby captain on the eve of a World Cup final after he was asked, 'What if you lose?' , he replied.
"It matters little, for tomorrow we wake up and we will still be French"
ie the spirit in which they play is paramount ... The result is for the scoreboard attendant to determine.

poetry dude ... Embrace it

(and quite frankly I don't give a rats bottom what St George fans do)

They certainly didnt play like mates this year. Didnt stand side by side and put in the extra 1%'ers for their mates. They were a disjointed rabble this year.

For the fans, it is all about winning.

Benji can be a free spirit in his own time.

It looks pretty fun at Melbourne and Manly these days what with playing in semis and grand finals every year….I'll take winning football over classy football any day.

So funny; I normally dont like what Benji has to say on that show. But tonight in what was obviously a difficult situation I thought he handled himself really well.

And to all the tough guys who seem to think it is out of order to shed a tear when a mate leaves the club, you have no idea. Based on what was said tonight its clear that the Tigers team is a close knit bunch as you would need to be to win a premiership. All the ingredients for success seem to be there - bar one.

Well Pymblepete you mention about( the Tigers being a close knit bunch as you would need to be to win a priemiership) in that case what has been happening since 2005 they haven't gone anywhere near achieving a premiership :crazy
I believe that they (including the coaching staff) have all become too close knit and complacent, and have forgotten how to win. They definitely have a responsibility to the fans/ members/sponsors/club, so I think some sort of shakeup is needed :bash
