IVAN Cleary has spent the past two seasons telling the Wests Tigers to “get on the bus”, now he is considering doing the unthinkable and jumping off himself.

Cleary’s previously squeaky clean reputation could cop a hit if he opts to quit the Tigers to return to Penrith as head coach on a multi-year deal.

The respected mentor still has two years left on his contract at the Tigers, but he wants to join the Panthers to coach his son Nathan.
**Cleary is believed to be seeking a release on compassionate grounds,** which has sparked frustration and anger from the Tigers’ faithful.

The fans believe Ivan should honour his deal and finish the rebuild at the joint-venture club.

Despite the supporter’s fury, Cleary has a friend in 2005 premiership-winning Wests Tigers forward Liam Fulton.

Fulton would love to see Cleary “stay on the bus” after spending the past two seasons using the catchy phrase as a recruitment incentive at Concord, but he also understands the mentor’s desire to coach his son.

It’s why he believes the Tigers shouldn’t stand in Cleary’s way if he wants to take up a long-term contract to coach the Panthers.

“As a Tigers fan it is disappointing if we lose Ivan, but you wouldn’t hold him back if he wants to coach his son,” Fulton told The Daily Telegraph.

“You have to have some sort of compassion there. Penrith have also got a great roster, so good luck to Ivan if he goes.

“To me, if Ivan goes it makes sense.

The Tigers can’t hold him back, says Fulton.
“Gus Gould is smart and if he wants to keep Nathan at the club, he should bring Ivan across as coach.

“Nathan is going to be a 10-year Origin player and it makes sense to bring in a quality coach like Ivan.

“But Ivan has done an awesome job at the Tigers and turned us around.

“He has made some really good purchases and most importantly he has given Luke Brooks a second lease of life.”

If the Tigers grant Cleary a release to return to the Panthers, **Fulton says the club should sign former prop Todd Payten as head coach.**

Payten lead the Tigers to the NYC under 20s premiership in 2012, while he is widely respected by the current playing group.

“I think Todd has done his time being an assistant coach,” Fulton said about Payten, who has worked as an assistant at North Queensland and is set to link with the Warriors as an assistant from next season.
\
\
Despite this, Fulton believes Payten should sign with the Tigers if Cleary departs.

“The Tigers have a lot of senior players and Todd would be perfect,” he said.

“He understands the culture of the club and he is a very smart man when it comes to footy.

“Todd coached the Tigers under 20s team and he got the best out of them, so there is no reason why he can’t do the same in the NRL.

“I know he would have the full endorsement of Robbie and Benji.”

Every person in the world should listen if someone offers them a job It’s a smart thing to do for his wife and him. But what I want to know is what has been happening with recruiting for next season in the past two weeks and for that matter the next two months Will he be here 2019/20??

Seems unlikely he'll be here and would be hard to recruit players if he was. Them knowing the current coach really rather be coaching his son at another club.

I’m sorry but the “tough family decision” line is a cop out. If someone at work tells me that I’m expecting to hear something really bad and would be fully supportive. But in this context it’s manipulative and conniving.

yep, he is gone. it's the I'm gone but I'll break it nicely routine

Players should be disgusted

How I'm starting to view it now. Players he's signed have every right to be filthy.

Compassionate grounds ???? - Is Nathan dying and won't be around in 2 years when Cleary can do what he wants. And Fulton putting forward his mate Payten. :roll

Liam Fulton - gee respected him as a player.

But one too many head knocks perhaps.

What a load of rubbish the whole thing.

Haha. It won't be payten he's taken up assistant coach role with the warriors just announced via David Riccio.

Coach Cleary is damaged goods.
Tigers need to screw Penrith for compensation.
Use funds to get best available coach on 2 year contract.
First point of order sort out current roster.
Benji & Robbie are way past it. Couldn't help us jag a G.F appearance or comp win post 2005 when they were at their peak.
They have had great careers, love to send them off in last game of the season.

Look forward to playing Penrith next year.

Ha
I called it early - compassionate and family grounds BS
Next it’ll be one of them is “fearing for their mental state” ALA Moses
Stick to your guns Pascoe
He coaches here or nowhere

What if Blake and Whare don't want to go…MWZ has already signed with them for next year..

I would ask for Cleary and Kikau..that's compensation..

Doesn’t matter what Blake or whare want really.

What a load of crap !

Total load of crap. So many posts where SG acts like he knows something that he doesn’t.

Do you think Maloney really wanted to play at Penrith this year? He was on record as saying he wanted to finish career at the sharks. Woods to sharks, Moses to parra, When a club wants/has to move a player, it happens. Why do you all act like this never happens. If Penrith want Cleary and tigers demand players, they will get players. Whether those at Penrith really want to go or not. Tigers probably sweeten their current deals by $50k or what ever as well.

Ivan Cleary is gone and set the Tigers back big time. Let the guy dog it,leave and negotiate compensation hard from Penrith

The tigers will not lose in this situation. They have ALL the leverage. Relax.

‘ALL the leverage’ to me that can only mean that we have an informal agreement that Nathan has chosen the Tigers. And of course we can’t reveal that until November we have to remain silent hence Ivan is remaining silent. Is it a power play then to screw Penrith over completely?
That was the first release before this all happened was that NC has agreed to join IC at Wests Tigers…
Unfortunately that key bit of info would let us know exactly where we stand but we’ll never know until.
If Ivan comes out and says that’s rubbish I’m staying. Well that would indicate that his son is coming across.
You’ve got to remember that ultimately the 2 of them won’t sign the next contract without both being on the same side. 4-5 more years is a long time in rugby league.
As far as Ivan goes all his told PENRITH is that he would be interested in coaching his son as soon as possible.....

It's laughable because Nathan still lives at home with his family! I've been away from my family (wife and son) for 16 months being stuck in Perth for work - saw them 4 times last year. I'm now in Canberra until December and can drive back on weekends at least. I'm trying to get a permanent position back in Sydney - and I'm not basing it on compassionate grounds either but rather performance based.

Liam gets a dail a quote and uses it to push his mate for the job. Using his other two mates as examples of players who would approve.

Let’s just play legends with the 05 team from now until eternity.
