Ivan Cleary - THREAD..

Penrith Panthers prepared for wait to sign Ivan Cleary as coach
AUGUST 09, 2018
PENRITH are prepared to play the long game in their pursuit of Ivan Cleary, adamant they can wait two years to get their man.

In a move that would make Cameron Ciraldo the NRL’s longest caretaker coach, Cleary could be set to see out the final two years of his Tigers deal before switching to the Panthers in 2021.

It appears the highly rated Ciraldo will remain in the head coaching hot seat next season, keeping it warm for Cleary, after Penrith decided against chasing another applicant for the long-term deal.

Ciraldo, who is still just 33, will be supported by recently retired Penrith hooker Peter Wallace, club general manager Phil Gould and Panthers vice-chairman and great Greg Alexander.

Cleary’s move will guarantee his son and NSW halfback, Nathan, signs a long-term deal with the Panthers.

It comes as The Daily Telegraph can reveal the Tigers had discussed extending Cleary’s contract, before the Panthers’ poaching bid surfaced.

“Everybody is of the understanding that the board, when Ivan is off contract, they would like him to be the coach at Panthers,” Panthers group CEO Brian Fletcher said.

“It a sensible thing, when he’s off contract, if he’d like to come back here, and his son is still playing here, he would get the chance to coach him. Nobody would be hurt, no one would break contracts.”

Tigers chair Marina Go last night accused Penrith of unethical behaviour.

“I think it’s really poor form that they have approached our coach when he has two years left on his contract,” Go told Fox Sports’ League Life.

Cleary addressed Tigers players on Wednesday but apparently would not commit either way his plans for next season.

The Tigers board was due to reaffirm their stance on Cleary. The key question now is whether Penrith will give up on Cleary for next season — or test the Tigers’ resolve again.

Cameron Ciraldo is poised remain in the Panthers head coaching hot seat next season.
It could potentially be untenable for Cleary to continue at the Tigers in 2020 considering the Panthers will be planning their recruitment and retention ahead of his arrival for the 2021 season.

There appears little love between Gould and Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe, a former Panthers employee.

Insiders say that at a meeting a fortnight ago, Panthers chairman Dave O’Neill asked Cleary if he wanted to coach Penrith in the future and that he was interested. After The Daily Telegraph revealed the Tigers would consider legal action if the Panthers tried to induce Cleary to break his contract, Penrith on Wednesday night defended themselves.

“We’re not going to get into any bidding war to get Ivan here tomorrow. You have to honour contracts. If Ivan wants to come here tomorrow, yes, we’d have him, it wouldn’t be a problem,’’ Fletcher said.

“We asked him if there was an expression of interest in coming to the Panthers and his answer was yes. We’re not asking him to break that contract but we hope he will be here in 2021.

“If he has to honour that and he wants to honour that, there isn’t a problem in the world. We’re in no hurry to get a coach.

“We’ve got a pretty good coaching system with Cameron, Peter Wallace with Phil Gould and Greg Alexander overseeing it. Cameron and Peter are in the system. We’re not in any panic stage. We could wait a year-and-a-half, it wouldn’t worry us.

“Knowing Ivan’s qualities, he will honour the contract but, then again, Wests Tigers might think that if Ivan wants to coach his son and his son is going to play at Penrith, they might let him go. But that’s up to them. We’re not there to pinch Ivan off Wests Tigers.”

I’m so confused why everyones so outraged. Nothing has happened so far. Ivan hasn’t signed with the panthers for 2021 yet. We signed him for two more years so why is everyone already assuming he’ll definitely be gone. Its like us complaining corey thompson is ‘definitely’ leaving us when his contract ends.

You watch Ivan the dog take Esan Masters with him to the Panthers. Both Ivan and Esan expire with the Tigers at the same time.

Start signing the young guys we want long term like the Broncos have done so Wayne can’t take them with him ( they’d release Darius though )

All this for a coach who hasn’t achieved that much.

Get rid of him now. Regardless of his contract. If he doesn’t want to be here then go. No point holding on.

By the way. One of his kids is named Jet. Seriously? Must be a knob to call your kid Jet.

So if Ivan wants to leave it's on him
Penrith back off for now so it doesnt tarnish thier club
Pressure on Ivan
Dont let him go
Sign Madge as a coaching Director

Madge signs and let's go players
Steps in to coaching role after Ivan is gone

Or Ivan re signs
Nathan signs on with us
We keep Brooks
Liddle comes good
Farrah as back up
Mbye smashes it at fullback
Twal Eisenhuth and Aloiai all step up
We are ready for a tilt in 2020

Sorry I think I was dreaming

Pull you head out of the sand.

Surely Ivan has brought the club into disrepute and is now deemed a conflict of interest. We should have rights to sack him without recourse - once the panthers have appointed a coach.

Okpinarient… It makes recruitment very difficult for us in the next few years... Players wanna know who the coach is... They don't wanna know a coach will be leaving soon

The whole thing is just a massive mess.

Gus has just been Gus, why anybody after everything that 'appears' to have gone on would want to work under him beats me. The desperation to hold on to NC is quite funny really, that's what its all about at the end of the day.

Wait two years for IC
Put a caretaker coach in charge until he arrives.
IC arrives…yey
Penrith don't make the top eight
Gus is isn't happy and starts eyeing up another coach
They then unethically approach said coach
IC is sacked (again by Gus)
NC is unhappy and wants to leave!

I suppose they get to keep NC for another two years though.

I don't agree with people that say IC could still coach the Tigers for the next two years. His eye would always be on the Panthers, stand out players at the Tigers could be getting tapped up for the Panthers.
I also don't agree with having a future coach working along side him, what would be the point? If he does want to go replace him and take the compo.

If we sack him..no compensation from Penrith..they will appoint Ciraldo with bee sting promising to look after him wink wink…move him to assistant ....and let Cleary waltz in..not a good plan..

The Panthers are starting to look a bit unhinged. N Cleary is a fine player but putting all your eggs in one basket and then making your coaching strategy based on who his father is seems barmy enough. To go into a holding pattern for 2 years to accomplish this is crazy. If this was our plan I'd be shaking my head.

Make him stay either way no release. If we have to pay Madge and Cleary make Penrith wait. 2 years is a long time in Rugby League Panthers won’t want to wait.

NOVEMBER NOVEMBER NOVEMBER - No team can negotiate with an off contract player from another team until then. IC knows that. Penrith jumped the Gun sacking Griffen. IC wouldn't go back to Penrith unless Gould is gonski! Huth tipped it when he said, in reference to Nathan coming to the Tigers: "It might still happen!" This has been the most covert NRL operation since Superleague! I reckon the Bus is on Silent Running!
