Moltzen happy to move to halves if new recruit Tuqiri wants to play at the back
GLENN JACKSON February 08, 2010
WESTS TIGERS coach Tim Sheens is open-minded about which position Lote Tuqiri will fill when he arrives from Leicester - and so is the player who made fullback his home for the club last season, Tim Moltzen.
Moltzen is in the curious position of being able to gain and lose the most from the Tigers' acquisition of Tuqiri; the 21-year-old could lose the fullback position, but he might also fill the halfback role the club has struggled with since Scott Prince departed.
That explains why Moltzen is cautiously content to hand over the No.1 jersey, in which he excelled late last season, should Tuqiri hit the ground running upon his return to the NRL.
''I've played a fair bit of fullback and halfback [at training] in the off-season,'' Moltzen said. ''Lote will be an asset for the team - he's a world-class player. I think everyone's happy to have him on board.
''From my point of view, this time last year I was happy to play anywhere. It might take Lote a bit of time to find his feet, which might mean me staying at fullback a little while longer, but if fullback's where Tim wants Lote to play, I might hopefully slip back into the halves.''
Moltzen said he had no preference yet. ''There are pros and cons of half and fullback but I've enjoyed both,'' he said. ''I'll be happy to play wherever. We'll just wait and see.''
Moltzen said Tuqiri would help the Tigers reach the finals for the first time since 2005.
''It's an exciting time for the club,'' he said. ''He's a big-name player and he's one we'll benefit from. Everyone's excited about the prospect of playing with him.
''Hopefully, on the back of where we finished the season last year, it'll be a successful year. We haven't made the top eight since they made the grand final but I think he'll help us achieve that.''

Scott Prince & Benji were a good halves pairing.
In time Tim Moltzen & Benji in the halves, could have the same effect , if not better.
hopefully Tim Moltzen gets alot of time in halves this season.

This one is going to cause a bit of debate as we all know Moltzen looked right at home at 7 late last year, but he's no mug at fullback either. I guess the other thing is that we can probably expect Moltzen at fullback for round 1 regardless of the trials as it's unlikely Tuqiri will be playing for the Tigers.

Then there is the poor soul who starts off in the number 7 jersey. It seems that regardless of how well they play they are doomed to lose the jersey when and if Lote moves to fullback…

The problem of who plays at fulback & who plays half back will be a healthy headache for Sheens.
Its obvious Moltzen will start the year at fulback & Tuqiri on the wing but when the season progresess i can't see Sheens leaving a $400 000 signing on the wing.So if it ends up being Moltzen & Marshall in the halves which i think is our strongest option, where does this leave our very talented halves in Lui & Taumata??

He isn't a $400 000 signing, he was signed on a base salary of $200 000!!! When will people get this through their head. The other $200 000 is coming from 3rd party agreements courtesy of Benny Elias

All in all, I think we are going to have a strong backline no matter what! I am gutted at the fact there seems to be no space for Taumata though!

Sorry to break this to you but $200 000 + $200 000 = $400 000
It does'nt matter what he is on.How ever way you look at it he is on good coin & players on good coin don't play wing

Agreed that he shouldn't be playing wing long term dre, I can see him as a really damaging fullback. Which as you posed earlier will leave Lui and Taumata to fight it out for #14\. Taumata has the natural skill and instincts to make a good fist of the centre position although i'm not sure about his defensive capabilities. A good problem to have though trying to fit in Lui AND Taumata into our squad.

IMO Moltzen should start the year at 7…Tuqiri should be our #1..until he arrives put Taumata at #1...this option allows for our havles to build on their combination and allows Taumanta to show us if he's over his "issues" and whether he's up to NRL standard.

Out of Moltzen, Lui and Taumata, may the best man get the number 7\. As supporters, lets get behind whoever starts off the year at half.

Agreed as long as it's Moltzen….....

and ive coached league @ junior level so i have the knowledge here and sheens has to play moltzen at 7, hes the best option at halfback in this club and if some one with a degree from ACPE can see this then surely sheens could.

so stop playing silly buggers sheens and play moltzen at 7.
