Jahream Bula #269

The point is that Walsh has shown he is more then capable and willing to being hit hard and has the ability to bounce out of tackles, like the good fullbacks of today.

Has Bula shown this attribute, not saying he can't develop it but a small question mark.
I don't know the tackle busts stats, but from a 'pub talk' perspective Bula doesn't seem to evoke many memories of breaking tackles like (certainly) Tedesco or Walsh.

He also only appears to be not returning the ball hard because of his relaxed running style.

But I've never seen him even flinch hitting it up, waver under the high ball (exceptional on attacking bombs), failing to be there when he should be backing up, and he is ~95% of the time where he needs to be on the defensive line and is deceptively strong and smart in defensive try scoring situations.

I just see they are different types of athletes; (For those of us old enough) there are the 'Ben Johnsons' (Tedesco, et al) and then there are the 'Carl Lewis'' (Bula). Both equally fast, but travel the distance to the line very differently. Also, hopefully none of them are on the juice! 🤣

I hope this is all a slow news day thing, but if the option for keeping him is $900k rather than $800k then to me it's a no brainer. Also, the cap is going to increase and the figures won't seem as outlandish as they do now.

As mentioned before, the tigers with and without him in the side are chalk and cheese.

And he gets markedly better each season to the point he is already after, what 3? 4 years? very clearly one of their top players:
Luai, May, Bula...?
Is that reasonable?

Regardless of the cap, I personally think he's worth $900k already to this team.

And that's the key point: he is worth $900k to this team.

I just think he doesn’t seem push up and get involved as much as Teddy and Walsh and therefore doesn’t have the impact on a game. The stats may say differently.

It may well be that it’s because Bula doesn’t have the elite talent around him to make him as effective. Maybe our players can’t get the ball to him? Or Bula is more heavily marked as he is the obvious target?

I think it could be a combination of still learning his role to an extent and also the... personality aspect?

He seems the type who is there backing up, but not screaming for the offload, if you get me?

I think he is quiet onfield. I don't go to games, so can't attest to this, but I often feel on returns he needs to talk more and Turuva needs to talk less! If a winger ever bumped into me when I was fielding a kick I would've gone full Mitch Moses scorched earth on them!

I think it's a 'find your voice' thing, but this will come with time and he'll develop more assertiveness as he grows.

He's not as young as you'd think, but from memory I think he was more into basketball as a kid, so it could also be he has started from behind in that sense.

I’m content with the Bula situation.
We have one year up our sleeve to get another/develop a replacement garunteed unless we let the deadline pass. 100k is the insurance policy cost.
If he hasn’t signed prior he isn’t going to stay anyway imo.
Doesn’t mean to say that we won’t release him if someone comes along even if we do trigger clause

Yeah I remember that cheater Ben Johnson well. Not sure I’d be happy if I was compared to him, but I get what you’re saying.

Bula not ready and will get crushed , this is one of the dumbes callls I have seen
sheens needs to go right out of this club as we will kill players in the juniors coming through with his selection style
Staines is our fullback
dumb Call this one
Lol if "maybe a multiple time premiership winner knows more about the players he coaches on a day to day basis than a fan" was more summarised in a single post. Sorry 426 but this is one for the hall of fame of badly aged takes.

I don't think he's already worth $900k to the team, we would be investing in his future.

However, he's young and has plenty of growth in him, mentally and physically, so he could turn out to be the complete player.

So, the question is, what are the chances of him developing into this player and do the Tigers really have many options.

Yeah so, lets roll the dice.

Lol guilty of using rocket fuel but man he could run fast, pity he couldn't do it without additives.
Cheating is cheating. He might as well have rode a motorcycle.
It wasn’t long after my bmx accident, I’ve never run properly since, but I could before and I was a fan of both Ben and Carl, and distinctly remember the sour taste of disappointment after finding out he had been cheating.
They all run 9.8’s now.
I really like watching obscure events at the olympics now days, but watching the 100 and 200 finals is still my fav.

If $800k is our cap, I don't see us getting a replacement anywhere near his quality.
Jaxson Purdoe is fast and 19yrs.
Also plays centre and was originally a 5/8. Not sure about taking bombs or defence. Haven't watched him play but worth a look. Would come for way below $900k. Could save a lot of bickies.

I certainly don't miss the bad old days of paying on potential. We all know how that turned out.

I really do think he is worth $900k already. Ponga is the highest paid player in the game (correct me if I'm wrong). If he is worth $1.4M a year to the Knights, I reckon Bula is well worth half a million less to the tigers.

Okay, so Newcastle's recruitment of late is probably not the best comparison, but it suits my point so I'll go with it! 🤣

I was a big Carl Lewis fan, but spoiler alert - test results from the '84 Olympic qualifiers mysteriously went missing...
And that is just one of many, many instances he avoided getting caught.
I'm reaching back here, but I think the US had a masking agent called "the clear"?

Or is that Scientology...?! 🤣

The video in the link is terrible, so I'll say that the fascinating thing about that 100m final is that all bar 1 of the athletes was on steroids - and it wasn't Carl Lewis.

Marrion Jones the same.

What thread is this again? Sorry...
