Jahream Bula #269

That points to a very balanced footy team to me. Threats all over the park and still pretty rusty.
Our hapves aside from the Souths game have played well, so they should not be included in this argument.
Tavana’s tries have been great and he adds that aerial x-factor that we have not had for quite some time.
Skelton’s try against the Cowboys in round 2 was a very good finish from a big, strong and powerful winger who was attacking the try line with purpose and was unlucky not to have scored the other try earlier on.
The othe tries from our 1-5 have been saloon passages to the try line that could have been scored by slmost any player from Reserve Grade upwards,

I can see your argument about him wanting 900K but just think you’re making it with a little too much criticism.

I’d love to pick him up for 750K but unfortunate his markets probably 900K. I’d want and expect him to keep improving if we pay that amount.
And that will mean we will be relying on our current squad to win us a premiership as we will not have the cap space to recruit anyone else.
We are doing well, but simply do not have the attacking quality to win a premiership anytime soon with the team we currently have, but adding one more quality attacking player within our 1-5 could potentially change that in our favour.

I think you’re a little too concerned about the big plays.

The one percenters win footy games and all of our backs are having a crack, along with our forwards.

We look like a connected footy side, and will only improve when Luai & May are back.

Some interesting name dropping from a friend of a friend close to dragons board today. Nothing new but consistent talk

They missed out on Troy fuller but “Trusting Moses to get their new full back” …
Good luck with that, I doubt Bula would be stupid enough to go to that rabble of a club.

The future looks like dogshit, similar to the vibe we had running into spoons.

Simply ask yourself the question, do you want to support a team with a very good forward pack who will get the better of their opposition more often than not, but still struggle to score points due to lack of quality in their 1-5, or do you want to support a team who has attacking strike within their 1-5 and can potentially win a premiership sometime soon because of it ?
Ahh... The good old false dichotomy... 🙄

Personally, I would've added a little more hyperbole and maybe kept it for a time when... I don't know... when the team wasn't second on the ladder.

Say what you want. Second on the ladder: FACT!

Any decent fullback would have made numerous tackle breaks and line breaks against an Eels team that were battered, bruised, had injured players on the field because they were running out of replacements and were physically exhausted.
We were extremely lucky to win as our attack was again so poor.
Sorry, have to contest that Vicious. Other way round, Parra were lucky to get close. It was only the sin bin that made a game of it in the second half. We should have/ would have won it in a canter without the garbage bunker call. Regarding Bula, the bottom line is he's not worth 900k the way he's playing at the moment and, I agree, we need more value for our bucks. I think the other aspect to Jahream is that he's just not as dynamic in attack this year as in previous years. A year or two ago he seemed to threaten much more. Why is that? Contract pressure? Low confidence? Structures that don't utlilize him properly? I actually think it might be all of the above. Maybe he could hit the weight room to build his stength too.

What have our back 5 done out of the ordinary to help us aside from Tavana’s aerial ability ?
None of the others have created anything out of nothing or done anything special to swing the momentum our way.
When you are talking about teams back 5, it is the fullback who is supposed to be the most dangerous attacking player and be able to create something when the teams attack is struggling.
We are simply not getting that, we are just getting someone who is safe under the high ball, doesn’t make many errors, backs up well and will score a try when someone has created a gap as big as the Sydney Heads for him to run through.
Does that sound like the player who will help us win a premiership anytime soon ?
Our back 5 yardage is actually why we are winning field position and our forwards aren’t fatiguing faster. They are winning tackle 1,2 & 3 and rolling us down the field. Matty John’s talked about it on his show with Cronk.

Also Luke scored an intercept try when momentum was all with the Cowboys to close out the game ?

For a little man, Turuva doesn’t get nearly enough love for his dirty hit ups.

Yes the yardage has been great, but where is the balance in having one or two players who are a genuine tackle break or line break threat each time they touch the ball ?
Skelton back in this week might help as when he is 💯 fit and running hard he is a genuine tackle breaker.
Makasini can do it and will be that player, not sure if it will be this season or next.
Turuva can break tackles and has been looking very close to making clean line breaks, should we keep him at right centre moving forward ?
IF Taylan May comes back and shows no ill effects from his shoulder injury, that will be a big positive for our teams attack.
Is Tino Tavana’s all round game including his aerial threat more valuable than Luke Laulilli’s powerful ball carries and big yardage ?
Do we need Skelton in our best 13 due to his size and physical presence?
Is Bula good enough to come up with special plays when our team is struggling to score points or needing a special play when the game is on the line ?
If he is genuinely worth 900k or more that should be happening, no questions asked.

Our back 5 yardage is ok, probably gets better with Skelton in. And, I'm glad you mentioned LL. Some may disagree here but I think the Forum is way to hard on him. Yes, he's made some defensive errors (mainly with jamming in at the wrong time) and he's dropped a couple of balls but there are members here who are over the top with their castigation. I actually think he's a real talent, who'd probably go alright at fullback. He's an elusive runner, who backs up well and is very good at the dirty yards in our end with his strength and low sense of gravity. Yes, he made a couple of critical errors against Parra but the way some carry on, you'd think he'd killed someone.

If Turuva can continue to be solid defensively at right centre, he should stay there permanently.
He was good for us last season, but is even better so far this season and at least threatens to break the line with every ball carry as does Luke Laulilli.

What you are basically saying is you want more x-factor from your fullback at that price tag.

That’s not a bad argument except there’s probably nobody better available and we are about to enter a premiership window, and can’t afford a backwards step in a key position.

Just my take on it.

He’s doing a fine job there. I’m only moving him because I couldn’t drop Madden on form and need to find a spot for Doobie.

That is 💯 correct in what I am saying.
Bula is safe and doesn’t do much wrong, but for 900k you are not looking for someone who is safe and doesn’t do much wrong, you are wanting a regular match winner.
When was the last time he got man of the match or was even in the running to get man of the match ?
He gets man of the match roughly once every 15 games and even that is being generous.
Compare that to how often all other fullbacks earning around 900k or more get man of the match ?

Someone else brought up Dylan Edwards. You could probably argue he’s a similar type of fullback, albeit a little better.

They’ve won a lot of footy games without an x-factor fullback.
