It’s understood Luai suffered the setback late last week and had scans over the weekend to assess the extent of the injury.
The Tigers travelled north of the border last week for a gruelling three-day army camp run by former policy and army personnel, where players were pushed to their physical and mental limits.
Coach Benji Marshall has given Luai the week off training in a bid to ensure the four-time premiership winner will be available for the Tigers’ first trial game against Canterbury on February 16 at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium.
The trial match is shaping as the first time Tigers fans will get a glimpse of Luai’s halves combination alongside talented youngster Lachlan Galvin.
The likes of Latu Fainu are in the running to replace Luai if the former Penrith star is not given the green light to take the field.
It’s understood medical staff are confident Luai will be available for round one against Newcastle on March 7.
