Actually an extremely great question, the govt met with the opposition and the opposition agreed to honor the 10 year deal. But if the nats and ON form a coalition and can form govt iv no idea if theyve come out to state theyre position on it.

Belt and road initiative was a real nefarious and brilliant way of China spreading influence and placing itself in soverign nations without firing a shot. Give cheap loans or build infrustructure that China knew the nation would never be able to pay off leaving them in a debt trap and China able to walk in and take assets and position itself within the nation. So simple yet so effective. Also so evil. Typical shylock scam.

Said it last week ill say it again. The guy is the worlds biggest germ. Out playing golf after getting injured potentially ending his Tigers career. In a game where his defensive reads on his side cost us a win. In truth it was him and the centre, but Luais arm grabbing attempted tackles allowed 2 tries through him. Bugger him off now, ill pack for him.

Having said that now example has been set, they cant complain when, let's say I like scotch eggs (and I do) and I organise a TPA promoting scotch eggs in UK with a bit of Oz promotion as well, whilst I play with whatever NRL club, it's independent of the club and its a private commercial arrangement between player - manager- promoter.

I find this quite naive on two fronts.

Last point first - I am convinced that a PNG NRL team will help improve their community. There's so much positive flow-on if a population can rally around a single identity or goal, then there's also the potential investment associated with the sporting side. Govts all over the world want big, successful sporting teams in their jurisdiction because it contributes to the economy.

Luai is an immediate example - I believe his shirt sponsor for Tigers is Exclusive Estate Agents. He signs with PNG and he gets Pepsi. Chalk and cheese.

On the first point, 60M a year does bugger-all for our armed forces. For example just one F35 is 150M to purchase and we have 72 of them in the RAAF. A single E-7A Wedgetail is 570M. A P-8A Poseidon is 300M. That doesn't even cost operating costs, pilot training etc.

It's also bugger-all for our Pacific investment - 3.75B per year spent on Pacific region assistance.

60M to keep PNG on-side and China out is pennies.
 
I think theyre planning on the education aspect being

The PNG kids love their footy
Regulated grass roots Junior footy over will become dependant on kids going to school, currently its a big problem
Hopefully parents see this as a possible out of the poverty cycle if their kids good enough to go on and make it in footy, and encourage them to attend school....and the kids themselves hopefully work hard and get an education so those majority that dont make footy will have an education that leads to careers and away from drugs crime etc

While $600m is peanuts when it comes to upgrading, building, or purchasing modern, battlefield-ready hardware and systems, what that $600m can do over that time is train and strengthen our current personnel, as well as attract new recruits, in what is a new, modern age of warfare due to drones.

Our current armed forces (land, air and sea) number just over 90,000. China’s number over 2,000,000 and growing. Look at Ukraine and how it has used technology to stave off Russia.

The Chiefs’ Club will not protect our borders, nor will it change the influence and debt that China has plunged PNG into. Sure, it’s a feel good story, but that’s all it is, a politically brokered story by the Labor government.

Edit: PNG have around 4000 active armed forces.

But thats the thing, were spending the money in an effort in soft diplomacy to keep P.N.G onside and China out. But as it stands it just looks like P.N.G are just playing footsies with both sides. Theyre buddying up to us and embraced the new franchise and all the tax dollars we send. At the same time theyve allowed some of Chinas biggest firms that are really just fronts for the ccp. Giving them carte blanche in P.N.G.
