OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

Where would everyone rank him among our signings when it’s all said and done, personally I think he’s been one of the worst when you look at the money vs impact and the constant circus with him, the Galvin saga, team first, the quotes, png etc
Might be time to look inwards. I can’t think of any big money signing that has been better.

Blair, Mbye, Reynolds, Packer all disappointed.

No one player can fix this place on their own.

Maybe the money we were freeing up with laulili etc is for Jerome to be paid on this years cap
What I’m saying is we had a registered contract for Jarome for 2027 for $1.2M. Both parties have allegedly agreed to terminate the contract and settle with a $300K payment. So what I’m wondering is does the NRL accept this and say, “no worries Tigers, you can have the $900K or $1.2M back in your 2027 cap” of the Tigers do pay the $300K this year, or do they say, no, the $1.2M stays on the cap or a variation like given you’ve paid out $300K, you can have that back for the 2027 cap.

I’m really not sure what the rules applied look like.

How does that work from a cap perspective? If we have $900K back on the cap for 2027 that’s a brilliant outcome. I’d have thought we’d have to wear some money from the breaking contract in the cap….
I have zero idea the rules when it comes to contracts so I'm out of my depth there sorry mate

Seriously all jokes aside, financially how good is Luai travelling, TPA from the cheifs being paid and they're not playing in the nrl, is that allowed??? Or is this another albanese government payment to sweeten the deal ??? Wait till png actually start, alot of clubs / fans will be complaining
The supposed nature of TPAs are that they are independent from the club. But companies do pay them based on a player signing with a certain club.

In reality, these are nudged into reality by the club itself, but if that tie can't be proven, then its just a company paying a player to promote their business. Nothing wrong about it.

He’s right up there with Moses Embye and. The Grub !! All on mega bucks and all failed to deliver !

I’m not sure either. I will say though, if we payed 300k to terminate, it’s no different to paying 300k for him to play somewhere else. They both come off the cap.

The double standards on luai is crazy. He has not lived up to the lofty expectations on the field but the outrage and pile on in the last few days has been ridiculous. He's had great games this year and terrible games, and a bunch of quiet ones.

Season overview so far.
Makes permanent switch to 6 in off season. Great game vs Cowboys round 1 with multiple try assists with taylan may getting bad injury. 2 try assists vs Rabbitohs in an average performance where game is locked up then both halves get injured late and Rabbits win it. 3 weeks without him and Taylan the team wins and plays very well beating a great warriors team, eels easter monday and knights understrength. The fans are relentless saying luai should not be put back in the team with jock and AD on fire. Broncos game is a toss of the coin and game is decided in the end by some poor errors by Makasini and a silly play where all 3 players AD, madden and luai spread ball to the left rather than setting up for field goal. The following week Raiders at leichhardt is a good team win with AD man of the match.

A few days later Luai travels to PNG to check things out and signs a few days later.

Since then, 3 weeks vs Sharks, Storm, Manly are all floggings with Hope, Madden and Toa in particular poor in defence. 3/4 of the spine were all out during these weeks with reserve grade backup players like Madden, Hope and Mason.

The bulldogs game luai was one of the best players and defensively was targeted all 2nd half by Tupouniua but stood up. The following week is the worst loss of the year and luai's worst performance individually. Following week he scores a hat trick in a comeback win to farewell Leichhardt. Dolphins after that luai has 4 try assists in a losing team. Knights game luai is a ghost and misses a key tackle at end of game leading to match winner. Delayed concussion rules him out of dragons game which we lose 24-10 in a lacklustre performance. Last night jarome played rubbish and probably was mentally impacted by the news and attention on him.

The past month or 2 luai has played better than bula, turuva, koroisau, terrell may and other key players but is copping the most (simply because he's on big coin). Scapegoating him doesn't solve anything. The injuries to key players has been horrific and terrible timing with Luai's announcement. The media and external pressure seems to be too much. It's the club moving Luai on. Everyone having a go at him not being loyal to Benji or the club or comparing it to the Galvin situation should remember he backed Benji during the Galvin situation and was influential in getting Terrell May in Samoa camp in 2024 to the Tigers as a late November signing. No one had this same level of vitriol for DCE last year who is a club legend who played over a decade at Manly. I liken this situation to Ben Hunt who was booed towards the back end of his dragons career and had a falling out with the coach.

Now that the dust is settlling ….

I’m glad he is out the door officially …next year would have felt weird with him here just marking time .,, he would have been a punching bag more so than what he is now…

His time I guess wasn’t a total disaster like some others have been .,.but it’s still been disappointing …His signing came on the back of Richo taking over and of an independent board …things seemed on the up

30 months later Richo, Luai and the independent board are all gone ,,for not a lot of improvement if we are being completely honest ,,,

I hope this freed up money is spent wisely ,..it’s not a hell of a lot in the scheme of things and there is a bit to be done..

For/against Luai leaving B, thought it was good as soon as I heard.
He’s been a flop for mine, all talk no walk.
He’s been credited far too much for changing the culture here, I don’t see it - they’re players that have come, haven’t credited him for coming- just Benji.
AND we’re still having games where we get 60+ put on us, so what’s changed?
We’re looking down the barrell of another really poor season, last year it was the kids fault - who’s is it this year?
We’re not spooners anymore, but I said last year have we improved in line with the playing stocks we’ve added?
Most would say no, and he’s a big part of that.

Hard to believe anything he’s said from the first moment up to now, We’re been nothing but a pay day for him.

I saw Twal laying down the law in the huddle yesterday - give him the 1.2!!

Dunno how anyone can watch Luai the past 2 years and think he's anywhere near worth a mil.

He's just not that good lol. He's at best, an above average 5/8th. As a player he's not worth anymore than 600-700k.
That’s not our problem now. We determined his worth off what he did his last couple seasons at Penrith. And if you go back two years, I’d bet the majority if not all of us would have claimed he was worth every dollar the way head Penrith while Cleary was out. Anyone claiming otherwise is a revisionist. Is he still worth that price tag? Of course not. But that’s Parra and PNG’s problem.

Fair enough. I personally don’t really have an issue with Luai. He could have been better for sure and I think he would say the same. Have the standards and culture shifted? Hard to know with a rookie coaching team. I think he’s tried to deliver and I will always love his team first support of Benji at the time, but it kind of feels hollow these days.
Don’t get me wrong, he should have taken the PNG money, I mean apart from wanting to be Batman he also came here for life changing cash, so that’s consistent.
I think the issue is how easy it is to say what you are, what you would do etc until you actually have to do it and choose to go the other way. That’s what he has done. Circumstances changed, so his “ look after me and my family and I’ll be here for life” stuff now just looks like bullshit. There’s no hate from me, I applaud his decision to go to PNG and get as much as he can for his family. I also applaud Benji for making the right decision for this club moving forward. Luai could have made this departure difficult, but it seems like he’s played ball. Hats off to him and nothing but well wishes from me, both parties move forward.

Where are the results since his arrival on the ladder? In the last 2 years he has been here have we looked like a top 8 team? Regardless of who he has "attracted here" we are still going to finish no where near competitive for finals, that's RESULTS not perception, is it just a Luai problem? No, it's a squad problem where we have significant gaps across the board but he is a liar "I'm here for life bro" and started seeing he is receiving 3rd party payments from PNG without informing his current club! It's clear he is a snakey used car salesman. All talk and then when he saw the private jets and dollars, everything he said when he initially signed was just a LIE.

I'm not sure what made people think Luai would play well last night given the leak that we are trying to off load him. Can't possibly have been in a great head space - let alone in a position to face a presser after the game.
Can we talk about how the moment Shane Richardson leaves, we start leaking again? Those freaking clowns at HBG are mad that they weren't getting informed on important matters that should have been private between the coach and CEO. THIS is why they were being told NOTHING, because they cannot keep a tight ship.

That's a fair assessment. It is bad optics to say he'd be here for life given what has happened this year. Probably should have worded that press conference better. With the clauses in I don't blame him and the questions from media about it he probably could have said while he's here he'd do his best but not make any promises. I don't believe at that time last year in July he'd have any idea that PNG would have an extra million per year compared to his current contract. If he was leaving the club for 200K more I wouldn't understand but 1 million extra is life changing, and I and I'm sure many others (including those who are being critical of him for doing exactly that) would do the same. I take issue with comparing it to the Galvin situation because Lachy repeatedly asked for early release requests out of his contract whereas Jarome's contract is a year by year player option, not a 5 year one as some like to believe

I’d struggle to pick him this week, he has no hunger.

Someone reported on here that it was Luai's camp who leaked it early, not from the tigers side
