Russell quote-:
I don't think I am accepting mediocrity or inconsistency - I think I am accepting a Club that is trying it's best to dig itself out of a giant hole that others put it into (i.e. people not now at the club).
*I see a board that is trying it's damnedest to get the club out of debt and to have money available to buy a few players that we need to turn the WT from a mid table club to a top four club. The fact is that we won't become that without those players.
*I see an S & C team that did an exceptional job this season to turn us from a bunch of crocs over the previous two seasons into a club with one of the shortest injury tolls in the league.
*I see a coach who is honest, hard working, liked by most players and is doing his best with what he has available. I see a coach who has been blamed for "The Farah debacle" - not saying he didn't want to get rid of this player who was disruptive and not part of the coaches plans. It would be a fact that when he announced early in the year he was gone, he would have been backed by the board. The board actually did a complete turnaround and not only didn't back him when the going got rough, but he was made to apologise in front of the whole team. He had to wear the animosity of this this but never blamed anyone else. He managed to get his way at the end of the season as he should have earlier. I see a coach who was hamstrung with the second tier salary cap - some players he wanted to select he couldn't and v v. I am sure if he didn't have to - he would not have picked Rankin as a dummy half - it was his best option at the time (and no he could not have picked Farah, he was injured, not that he would have if he was available).
*I see a coach who had a lot of youngsters that needed experience - most spent the year improving e.g. James Tedesco, Mitchell Moses, Ava Seumanufagai, Josh Aloiai, JJ Felise and Joel Edwards - to a lesser extent Kyle Lovett, David Nofoaluma and Sauaso Sue. Brooks marked time and some fell by the wayside, like Curtis Sironen.
*We had some great wins, some lucky wins, some close losses and a few thrashings - nothing we did not expect at the start of the year. The team tried - we know when you have youngsters, you have "rocks and diamonds" - that is what we got, surprise, surprise.
I am not accepting mediocrity by saying it was a reasonable season - it was, for what we achieved, with what we had. We need to do better, we all know that and I am sure that the players and coach know that as well. By saying we did ok doesn't mean we are not going to give it our all in 2017 or that we can't try and be twice as good - it is just saying - "we did better than last time, but not as good as next time."
