OFFICIAL Jeral Skelton #294

It’s why I’m wary about Turuva. It’s very easy to look like a million bucks on the end of that backline, and there were times where Charlie definitely did. The thing that concerns me is that Turuva isn’t a To’o. He’s not big and raw boned. He’s more in the Charlie vein. A jockey. I want to see how he goes on the end of our backline before I count him as being a signing on the same level as Luai and May.
That's true and there are a lot of similarities to Staines before he joined us. However, Turuva is a very strong ball runner for his size and rarely gets dominated which is one of the issues with Staines.

I'm hoping they keep him on the wing for now.

Idk. Weak defence is in our DNA. It would be the first season ever if we suddenly showed some grit.
With the improved attack, it should in theory provide more in the tank for defense and it also limits the amount of time the opposition have in attacking field position.

Skelton looks the goods to me. He has areas for improvement in his game - fitness, defence reads, understanding his strengths. But has plenty of intent. Could even make it as a centre with the right coaching and against the right opposition player.
Hopefully Olam returns fit and ready to play consistently, then early season looks like it will be one of Toa or AD as the other centre. Skelton and Turuva on the wings. Depth in outside backs will be Staines and Naden then second half of season Makasini and Luke L also.

Better fitness, improved line speed to take space away from the attacking team, and improved wrestle to win the ruck and slow the play the ball. Practice to the point of muscle memory.
That would be great... I'd be over the moon... However with Hodgo being the only change.we.know of in the coaching ranks Im doubtful well see it
Hope I'm wrong

It’s amazing what a run of wins can do for belief and defence too. We have the draw to do it this year - if we get off to a good start and build from there we could make the 8.
There’s no such thing as an easy or tough draw. Every year there will be teams who play better than expected and other teams who bomb. Prime example is the Broncos last year. No one would have predicted they would miss the 8 after almost winning the comp in 23. You know never know how a season will play out, hence why you can’t put in stock in a teams draw.

Im not sold on him yet and. Worried he may be another Tony Williams.
I seemed to sense some hesitation in him at times watching last year.
He's only young and very early in development so hopefully it doesn't become a thing with him

Comparing Turuva to staines is very unfair. Staines had 1 good debut where he scored 4 tries and the rest of his career he was the weakness in penrith's inpenetrable lineup whenever he played, and wasn't in reggies. He didn't provide much in terms of scoring tries or running from the back, he was simply 'good' in a great team. Turuva has had several 'great' games in a great team. Not comparable. End of story.

I don't see Turuva as the level as Luai and May or as good as To'o. But he was on the end of many Luai passes and goes pretty well.
Might not be the most talented player but he's got that unique penrith competitiveness in him. Something guys such as Naden, Staines, Salmon, and other penrith departees didn't have when they left. Some are system players

Agree, but I’m more talking about the first 2-3 rounds for us are completely winnable and we may be able to build some momentum.
