Jersey Flegg Trial

Did anyone catch any team sheets for the WT Flegg Trial today? They didn't announce any player names at the game. They also had two different squads that came on for each the guest two quarters.

Looked like Etu Lui got an ankle injury but otherwise looked good. Ryan Garner looked good in the second row, bulked up a bit, and made a couple of breaks, looking more like Luke.

Mavoni lacked any impact. Halves looked solid. Defence out wide looked shakey but to be expected with so much chopping and changing of the squad. A few big boys in the backs

We were losing 4 tries to two when I left after 3 quarters. Manly weren't changing their line up as much. Rizk was in the grandstand for some reason. Anyone get the final score

There a picture on Twitter is that tannous with a broken leg?

ACL by all reports. Terrible news.
Geez we have some bad luck with serious injuries to talented and touted young guns. Been that way almost since day dot it seems.

Didn't even know there was a Flegg trial today, didn't see it advertised anywhere?

I don't know. Even at the game they didn't mention anything. The players just came out. No information on the game was published anywhere it seems

Wow and we let that other half go to knights.

No team sheets. We put 2 teams on - one went better than the other whereas Manly pretty much kept same side.

We rested several of our expected rising stars who will be in the squad - hence Riszk not playing.

I think we let a few boys go after the game so squad is getting smaller.

Should see a near full strength side in 2 weeks for the next trial.

Did anyone catch the Flegg trial v Canberra last weekend? We won 6 tries to 2. Anyone catch who played well?

I was at the game - a bit hard as no programs and we had our first side which played the first half (with a number rested for a run on for first grade) and then a completely new second side. Not saying that the 2nd side was the possibles as I would have had Riszk in the first side and he played well in the second half at fullback. Canberra looked like they did the same but my understanding was that as they don't have an Under 21s this year, some of their players might have been older CC.

We had some big units but they dropped the ball several times not to mention getting pinged about 4 times in the first half for not playing the ball correctly. Mavoni very good and another big forward but they need to work on their hands.

Dillon looked sharp and I thought Stevanovic played well as did Felix Smith in the forwards.

On the LHS we had a centre (Number20?) who was extremely dangerous every time he touched the ball while our RHS centre went well and set up a nice try for Scolari.

I have to say the defence of our forwards and backs was very good. The final score was 24-8 (they announced the score incorrectly at half time) and Chops seemed happy with the final result but remember this was only a trial - no combinations, different players 2nd half and Canberra might have been fairly weak although their fullback was outstanding - definitely an NRL prospect.

We should get a better indication of how we are going with a proper side, minimal replacements I suspect this weekend at Leichhardt.

Don't be surprised if they do the same thing this week after all it is still a trial

Well I think that would be pretty silly. One week out from the comp, they should have a squad pretty much picked. The mayhem of different sides and combinations, you won’t see that with the NRL on Sunday. The same should be true with Jersey Flegg.

Think all three grades will more or less be picking their strongest sides for Round one. Enough experimenting, time to build on field chemistry and form

Cheers mate!

I'm positive they'll announce the team lists for these games so we should be able to join any missing dots

Weren't Canberra missing the 4 juniors from the glassing incident

That was their SG Ball team and they still managed to knock over Wests.

Did you notice that WT'S have selected a 13 man bench for the TRIAL against Manly it is a trial a chance to try various combinations don't be surprised if they swap half to three quarters of the side at half time

Posted in the Manly trial thread but will re-post here for those not trawling through a large topic:

In Flegg the number 4 Iverson Fautimau looked great. A real handful and made a few great breaks. If he had have passed it to support players we would have been in under the posts a couple of times.

A solid attacking performance by the Flegg boys. The pack dominated and the backs finished things off. A number of handling errors, to be expected with a bit of rust. Also a bit of lack of cohesion, again expected when a number of players hadn’t played for a long time.

Dillon looked very solid. The wingers played well. Halves were ok. Rizk only played the final 20 which was interesting. Not really any standouts in the pack. Israel Ogden sure has some size to him too, was mostly playing centre but maybe a bit of wing/fullback at times too.

In NSW Cup we looked awful in the first half. Gave Blacktown about 75% possession. The train and trial boys really struggled. Kiah Cooper was invisible, Eden Rogers Smith made a number of mistakes. Tyrone Roberts Davis was also poor. Fitzgibbon looked solid. Did get beaten by Simona once, though also made a great bust up the middle only for Docker Clay to drop a catchable pass when he would have gone in under the posts. Also chased down a grubber in the in goal and threw it over his head for a try, only to be penalised for being an inch offside.

EJ Lui was very good in the pack, Dias was solid and there were a couple of rangas out there that did well too. Young Tyler field was filling in for Madden and did well, kicked a 40/20. Rodwell was solid and crashed over next to the posts. Docker Clay was a bit all over the place, a few poor passes from hooker, and then at 5/8 also made a few errors. Didn’t see Kei too much. Blacktown largely scored off our mistakes, can’t keep dropping the ball 20m out, or throwing intercepts.

When the fringe NRL players drop down we’ll be very strong in all three grades. Especially with a number of SG ball players pushing for promotion, there may be a few promotions across the grades throughout the year.

An issue for all three grades was the repeat sets. We got pinged a lot in all matches. Against better team’s they’ll make you pay

Thanks for the review BB. Tyler Field to me is a real talent. We're lucky to have both he and Madden.
