Jock Madden

Next time DCE kicks a 40/20 or finds the grass downfield, evaluate the hit up/run prior and the speed of the play the ball. It’s often Tapau or Jurbo. Our halves kicking game will only improve when we learn to play the power/ruck game better. Stef should be used for this purpose imo
Whilst I agree with halves kicking under pressure and the space available for them. I’m not commenting on the kick choices by the halves under pressure.
Jock is the first half I’ve seen who strikes the ball well when kicking long. That is the only point I’m making. Hastings bombed all day long for Wigan and Brooks just doesn’t seem to have the power in his legs like he used to.

Yes Brooks and Hastings have a similar kicking game

I guess it all depends on this next game and how Jock comes out of it. He has been one of our best in the last two weeks but if he has a rough game it could be a straight swap with him getting some more time in cup again.

I did notice Jock got a bit of extra purchase on some of his longer kicks. Young legs.

I’m not sure about that in isolation.
The remarkable turn around with Mitch Moses was Andrew Johns mentoring him.
No doubt he had an impact on his kicking game and gave him plenty of pointers on how to get the best purchase out of the ball.
It was mentioned by Cronk the other night that Moses did not strike the ball the same way 3 years ago.

Because he can’t really kick well. We need a DCE style kicking game to get us out of the quagmire and the only one remotely close is Madden.

He was putting in good kicks in the super league and here this season. You make a good point about Madden though.

I'm not sure of the answer but I think we have enough quality players when Doueihi and Hastings are back to have a decent halves pairing.

I'm not stating that coaching or mentoring or some form of support isn't important and it can't make a difference but it's interesting how some players kick on and some don't.

The halves are also such a skill and decision based role that the ceiling is I think hard to pick.

Madden to me has been really impressive. I had really low expectations as well. I saw some of him in reserves and he wasn't that good. Maybe his ceiling is higher than a lot of other halves in the game.

He has always had a good kick on him. And looked natural leading the boys around the park. (In lower grades that is)

The Wests Tigers are in danger of losing Jock Madden with the off-contract playmaker to start testing his value on the open market from Friday.

Madden’s preference is to stay at the Tigers and it’s believed the Concord club made contact with the 22-year-old’s management on Monday to start extension talks.

News Corp can reveal Madden is seeking assurances the Tigers view him as a long-term option at halfback, putting pressure on the club to manage the Luke Brooks’ contract situation.

Brooks is set to earn around $1 million in 2023 but his immediate future at Concord is under a cloud, with the club open to moving the halfback to a rival team.

If Madden does agree to stay at the Tigers, the Scone junior will be on a collision course with Brooks for the No.7 jumper.

“I want to play at seven, I think seven is my best position but I can play both [positions in the halves]. In the long run I want to play at No.7,” Madden said.

“I definitely would [like to stay at the Tigers]. I came down here in 2019, I have been down here for four years.

“The club is definitely going in the right direction and I want to be a part of that success.”

Tigers coach Michael Maguire called on Madden to replace Jackson Hastings after the five-eighth was whacked with a three-game suspension.

Madden, who is off-contract at the end of this year, has been impressive since receiving a call-up into the NRL side two weeks ago to cover for Hastings.

With Hastings to return in round six, against Parramatta, Sunday’s clash against an in-form Cronulla is shaping as a final 80-minute audition for Madden to not only cement a spot in Maguire’s 17, but prove his NRL credentials to potential suitors.

“I want to play first grade now, I want to be playing NRL footy week in, week out,” Madden said. “That’s my league now, and that is where I want to be.

“It does cross your mind (that Hastings will be back next week) but I don’t let it affect my performance at all.”

Having had a ‘taste’ of NRL football, Madden is focused on adding to the five games he has played since making his debut in Magic Round last year.

A strong performance against the Sharks could convince Maguire to keep Madden in the halves and name Hastings at lock against the Eels the following week.

Hastings is viewed as an option at lock when Adam Doueihi, who also wants to play in the halves, returns from an ACL injury mid-season.

While the Brooks and Doueihi combination is an option from Maguire, the coach can also opt to go with Madden and Hastings in the halves until Doueihi is fit enough to make a comeback.

Madden is no longer content waiting for an injury or suspension for a chance to play regular top grade football

“I want to play first grade, as a young kid growing up all I wanted to do was play first grade,” Madden said. “I’m getting to do that now and I want to keep my spot in the first grade team week in, week out. Things like that will sort themselves out down the track.”

Jock's developing nicely and should stay in the halves. Hastings to the forwards as was reported when signed.

Articulates himself sell.

This year year I'd go 6. Brooks 7. Madden 13. Hastings 4. Doueihi

Given AD injury history I'd ease him into it this year.
