Now the plan is to throw part of that at Panthers in a bid to release Laurie.
Laurie is the next priority so we can have a full off season with future spin.
Musgrove also offered new 2 year deal.
Thank you, I think the fact WT aren't disclosing the amount we got from manly is a big mistake. It makes us look weak, because it looks like we aren't announcing how much we got from Manly because if we announced it everyone would know we were weak. We had a chance here to stand up to these players, and instead we caved. We even tried to stand tough, Leo coming out and talking tough, and then in less than a week it's all hush hush sort it out behind closed doors.
Lesson we hopefully learned here;
1. Leo needs to not say things in public and then go back on them. He should NOT have said that rubbish about being tough on Aloiai and the comment about mowing lawns and painting sheds. Now he looks like a liar.
Lessons we did not learn here;
1. Letting Aloiai go for "x" amount of money will NOT deter a player from trying it again in the future at our club. It was a poor effort, there is absolutely no deterrent to prevent a player doing it again in the future. You can pretty much guarantee they will within the next 12 months. Disappointed we are still soft.
The irony is that we were screwed over by Aloiai the scummy and Manly, and the pittance we did get now we will try to use legitimately to get our man early, which may or may not work.
Nice guys finish last. Or ninth. Or this year 11th.

We got a player we wanted whether or not that was in the works prior im not sure, but Aloiai was one of better forwards but thats not such a high bench mark really he's an average first grader.
I think if we didnt have Packer grub & Mbye wasting away our cap we possibly could have played thing harder but its like fighting with one hand behind your back with cap thieves like that in your roster. Possibly the best of a bad situation.

I genuinely don't understand why people think this. The Tigers said they weren't going to just release Aloiai without a replacement. Such a replacement became available, and they were able to use the cash they were going to spend on Aloiai to secure him.
Pick an option:
A) Stick Aloiai in reserves and don't replace him on the first grade roster, to make a point that we won't be pushed around.
B) Stick Aloiai in reserves and sign another prop, using money that could have been used to strengthen the squad elsewhere.
C) Decline to release Aloiai until a suitable replacement can be found, find one, sign him and then release Aloiai to free up cap space for said signing - thus making a like-for-like swap.
You're totally welcome to believe Ofahengaue isn't a good replacement for Aloiai. You might be right. But if the club thinks he is, using Aloiai's money to get him is clearly the best outcome for the 2021 roster.
Joe O is not a replacement for Aloiai. There was plenty of room and funds for both. I don't watch Broncos except for when we play them, so I don't know much about our new player. I'm hoping for good things though.
Gaining Joe and losing Josh are two unrelated events.
The problem here is we said we would not release Josh A unless we received a financial advantage. That was a very public statement. And now WT have said we received a payment for Josh A (good to hear) but we're not disclosing how much, WT just wants us to trust them. Maybe it was a high enough amount, and really if the figure was publicised, only WT are in a position to adequately judge whether the figure meets their criteria or not for it being a 'good enough' amount.
It is just very unfortunate that there was no deterrent for players stitching us up again. And a lot of us said this last time with Matterson. So who's next? Nofa? Twal? Mikaele? Talau? Liddle? I'm guessing it's more than one next time. Wonder how that will go down.
That is so true..were now a serial a soft touch whomever we improve who decides to bail mid contract...oh its ok..we'll find someone else to replace you...go rite ahead.
And compensation..well,thats a secret
Not the way to run a business

Seriously all the *****"WAH WAH WAH we want to know how much"***** rubbish so self centred and ridiculous. There are MANY commercial reasons not to disclose even not considering the obvious contractual ones. Maybe Manly dont want it disclosed or as POM alluded to earlier, if we are using that money as an enticement for Penrith to let Laurie go early, why the hell would you let them know how much we got? Would totally destroy any negotiations.
Spot on mate... I think we have had a massive win here and people are still complaining.. People need to understand that the player we might of wanted from Manly might not of wanted to come here so we looked outside the box and got Joe O at a discounted rate for the next 2 years... We didn't need a swap with Manly to make it a good deal for us as we could of held firm for the next 12 months and lost JA for nothing... Thats right Nothing.. Now we get rid of him and the negative press it would of brought, get a SOO quality player at 25 yrs old and get 100k+ to put towards something else...
I am wrapped with the news today and even media guys out there are saying this was some smart business.

I mentioned the other day that it’s been as entertaining as the regular season. The only issue is that I’ve got my hopes up..
Me too, I think we are a genuine shot at the 8.

there's still a lot of what ifs that surround this squad. what if Leilua and Roberts don't have their hearts in it. what if Brooks has another below par season. what if Liddle doesn't fill the void Harry left. what if Joffa plays like he did last season. what if Musgrove gets injured again and Stefano doesn't kick on. what if Tamou plays like he's already thinking about retirement.
our season at this stage is completely unknown. I do hope that everything clicks into place, but we won't know until the first 6 weeks of the competition and we've played against some decent sides.

Aloiai's salary is off the Tigers' cap, and the space created has been used to sign Ofahengaue.
Do you think the Tigers should have restricted themselves to only the Manly Sea Eagles roster when it came to finding a replacement for Aloiai? Because the fact that Manly wanted to sign a prop suggests to me that they may not have that much available in the prop position.
I wish people could be more realistic about this sort of thing. Aloiai spat the dummy and acted unprofessionally, but the Tigers' choices were (a) to just live with a roster spot taken by a guy who doesn't want to play for them but they still have to pay, or (b) be creative to reassign that cap to a suitable replacement. By waiting until they have a replacement, the Tigers are "playing hardball" with Aloiai AND looking after their own interests.
"But why do clubs never release players to the Tigers early?" Well, perhaps it's because a lot of the players we sign early are on development or minimum contracts and thus there's no incentive to let them leave. If Parr and Penrith had to replace Utoikamanu and Laurie they'd only have minimum salary to do so - basically it would mean a kid or some guy off the street. The Tigers had the opportunity to use Aloiai's money to sign a rep prop with freight being paid by his old club.
Time will tell if Aloiai or Ofahengaue is the better player, but it's pretty clear that Ofa was a better option FOR THE TIGERS IN 2021. Any talk of getting tough or setting an example would be, clearly and undeniably, at the expense of the quality of the 2021 playing roster. That would be the stupid move, not arbitrarily demanding Manly "make it right" or taking petty, vindictive action against a player who clearly doesn't want to be here.

I’m with you, if they all play their best we will make the 8 but I feel like that’s not very likely. So hard to tell whether Brooks, Roberts and Joffa will find form again and if our other boys will continue to improve
@watersider said in [Ofahengaue Signs/ Aloiai released](/post/1273648) said:I think Tigers players and other clubs will still see us as soft even if they did give up some money. I like the addition of Joe O but I see losing JA as losing our second best forward (after Luciano) so I think this isn't much of an improvement overall. People are getting a little overhyped about our signings. We've basically signed players unwanted at other clubs on small contracts. I like the signings but it's silly to get hopes up about this season. Adding Joe O and keeping JA would have meant better depth and a stronger pack, I don't think we've achieved that yet this season. Tamou is certainly an improvement on what we have, but he's a year older and he might not have the commitment to play hard this year on his final contract. Overall, the clubs making good signings but we're still too impatient to get rid of players or coaches as soon as they get a little upset. We've seen Melbourne, Eels, Penrith and even the Titans handle such demands with more conviction. It seems like every time a player or coach requests a release we talk tough and then release them within a week. I really think JA could have been productive for us this year, irrespective of what has been said.
