Josh Aloiai #190

I would play Aloai on the left edge with Idris ad Suli to cover Brooks. You wouldn't want to run down that side of the field they are all close to 110kgs and strong. Play Sue on the right with Kev, Nofo covering Moses.
Lawrence should be used as a bench weapon he runs good lines at tired defenders and would be more impact. We have a lot of options in the middle Woods, Grant, Ava, Felise and youngsters Tatola, Paseka.
We must hope players like Edwards, Lovett don't get game time as they have zero upside.

Edwards strenghtens our defence and adds an intimidation factor as a big hitter. He was starting to look good towards the end of last season (not forgetting he started the season with a fairly major injury). I don't care if he's not in the 17 but he does have upside…
 
Aloiai should continue from where he left off in 2016\. Maybe not starting every game as a 2nd rower. For 2017 we are light on in the 2nd row and we have more than enough players to cover the prop rotation

I imagine if he goes into the prop rotation, it will be as a swap with Sue.

But that would mean we only have Lawrence & Sue to play 2nd-row unless MCK is on the bench.

He has been in the league since 2015 and struggled to break into lineups at Knights, Canberra and WT hardly world beating sides. Good technique in defence but a slow underweight forward who rarely dents the defensive line in attack. I reckon he has displayed what he is best at and thats probably interchange bench or NSW Cup.

He did not struggle to break into lineups at the Knights or Raiders, he was a mainstay at the Knights and they fought hard to keep him when he signed with Canberra on a 3 year deal. He was a mainstay of the Canberra pack for a couple of years before getting a few injuries and falling down the pecking order. Bench or NSW Cup is where he now belongs but he was for a time a pretty solid first grader, albeit he never offered a great deal in attack.

To play a high tempo foward game with size in the pack. I think the forward rotation will need to include interchanges to the second row. ET can play 80 mins but Sue and Lawrence would be more effective playing 60-70 mins. Maybe Sue 60 and Lawrence 70\. For this to happen. I'd have Aloaia covering both front front row and second row from the bench and include MCK in the 17\. Woods,Grant and Ava can all play long minutes in the front row. Woods is best playing long minutes ,controlling the middle.
 
Aloiai needs to keep improving his game, especially in attack. He was a rookie last year but didn't have much impact, outside of 2 games at the end of the season. Second rowers need to be able to break the line, offload as well as shoulder the defensive duties. I think Chee Kam is a better second rower than Aloiai but look forward to seeing his continued development throughout he upcoming season wherever he plays.

You can't just ignore the 2 games he where he played extremly well.

Aloiai is improving every week and we saw that at the end of 2016\. I think he will keep improving in both attack and defence and will be a very good second-rower (hopefully for the tigers) for many years to come :sign:
 
Josh needs to be making more hit-ups. Against the Dogs he made 26 meters from 3 runs. At 110kgs, I think he needs to put more runs and meters on the board. He's quick and tough which confuses me as to why he wouldn't be taking on more of an attacking load. Cleary played him off the bench on Sunday which I thought was a good move. But, he has a really powerful running game so why isn't he attacking more?
 
I think we've tried to get too many minutes out of him in 2016 and 2017 up until last week.

Maybe Cleary has decided to bring him on in a more measured way?

He was on the field for a period when we didnt have much ball and, when we did, our hit ups were being made primarily by our outside backs.

Sometimes it just works out that way.

I don't know what these stats mean but, it's all very confusing. It's seems since Ivan has come to the club, Josh isn't doing as much in attack.

VS Dogs 3 runs 26 meters
Vs Parra 4 runs 36 meters
VS Cowboys 5 runs 45 meters
VS Dragons 10 runs 83 meters
VS Storm 9 runs 98 meters
 
Josh was told he'd be a bench prop this season by Taylor, Cleary has decided to revert him back to the back row,where he is more effective.

Hasn't worked Josh has been disappointing this year
