If reynolds played the same amount of game time as him there would have been daylight.

No. Reynolds was terrible. The best place for him for us is clearly not on the park. The more he played the more obvious it was that he was hopeless.

This is not stating that Mbye is a good buy. He has been a pretty poor buy.

Certain results say we actually played some of our best footy with Reynolds on the park this year

V Canberra 14-6 (Loss) if I remember correctly we were well in this game until a few mishaps from Packer cost us

V Bulldogs 34-6 (win) Apart from the broncos games probably our most complete 80 min performance

V Cowboys 36-20 (win) 36-0 at half time and clocked off heavily in the 2nd half (due to injuries mainly)

V Penrith 19-12 (loss) another quality 80 min performance from the team, deadlocked with 10 mins to go against the eventual grand finalists and team that went on a 16 game winning streak.

V Souffs 20-12 (loss) absolutely nothing went our way in the 1st half, I hate blaming referees but he gave us absolutely nothing.

So basically our losses with him in the starting line up were against high quality teams, and not by much

Not as “terrible” as you state, if we go off team performance

Too be honest in some of those games the opposition wasn't even trying, the Bulldogs and Cowboys games were the worst defensive games I have ever seen. We would get down there end of the field and their defense was non existant.

Haha the old “the opposition weren’t even trying” because we totally outplayed them. Never gets old

Maybe if we use that for every flogging we’ve copped over the years people will excuse us

Anyways we all know Marshall has been shocking in defense for as long as we can remember, he could easily set up 2 tries and just as easily let in 3. But I think reynolds energy in defense, especially in today’s game was much more effective. ***The real up and in your face type stuff***, enough to stop the opposition and bide time for reinforcements to help

That real up and in your face stuff use to drive me insane. He would CONSTANTLY scream up out of the line and it must have been hard for the defenders around him to compensate.

For mine this is part of Reynolds biggest drawbacks in this team. Much has been made of him building his game around "energy and effort" in the absence of skill or talent. That is all well and good but it relies on high energy or energy effort plays which always looked to me to be him trying to show how hard he was "trying", when what we need was a player to play his part in the team game plan. He never looked to me to be part of the game plan and his screaming up in defence was the perfect example of this.

It honestly worked though. If you think about it, ball carrier has to stop, swab him off, then the defense comes in and swarms. Risk v reward sort of thing which he pulled off fairly often

Looks ugly on the stat sheet though, and would be annoying if you were defending either side of him I agree

No it didn't work

I suppose Benjis grabbing at thin air was more your style of defensive technique

Benji's defence was terrible in 2020, that does not make the way Reynolds played good. As I said earlier in the year, if the attribute people can name about you is energy then I don't think I want you as a 5/8th. I will stop speaking poorly of him now as he has left the club and I do believe he tried when on the field for us.

Geez 21 games across 3 seasons on his money has to make him our worst ever signing. He had to go.

Matt Ballin, 40 minutes playing time in 2 years would be up there too.

Ballin didn't really cost anything, was heavily subsidised by Manly. Overall, Reynolds is the worst signing in WT history imo.

Mbye is still up there for me. Hes played so much more than Josh Rey, yet i feel hes contributed less to the team. At least Josh looked like he gave a ?.

Mbye has made contributions, and I generally think he's a good player. He's just maligned so heavily due to his overinflated salary. If he was on $400k he wouldn't get the same criticism.

Mbye has played and done a decent job for us. Reynolds is our worst ever signing and it's not even close.

I cannot even think of one highlight to take from mbye in 2020, solid player who gives you the bare minimum a first grade player should, but that’s about it

***If reynolds played the same amount of game time as him there would have been daylight.***

Not even sure if Mbye has received one MOTM award playing for us? Grub has received multiple

There is a reason that Reynolds didn't play the same amount of game time and it isnt injuries.

Benji is why.

Brooks and Reynolds combined well when they played together this year

Exactly, Josh Reynolds standard of play and training was such that a 35yo who cant defend was preferred. Not a ringing endorsement.

Disagree mate.. Joshy had demonstrably more injury issues and suspensions. Don’t think the age or form of either player had a lot to do with it. Same as round 1 the year before...

Exactly, anyone with any nous could see Benji was in the team on name not merit, and Grub was the victim of the club pandering to Benji

DIsagree. Benji was preferred due to club politics. Reynolds should have been straight back in after his suspension ended.

100% he should have, we looked good before Grub was suspended, the club were too scared to drop Benji, and he gave them good reason to, the knights game was pathetic

Remember when we had that huge comeback game against south’s. Benji got absolutely carved that day in defense, but it was “ok” according to fans because without him we wouldn’t have even got close to winning

If Benji wasn’t a club legend, I don’t think he plays much footy at all in 2020. Emphasised by no club wanting to sign him for next year

My opinion too mate

All I will say in relation to Benji, is the club made the right decision and didn't re-sign him. No idea why some take every opportunity to give him a kick though when the club has already done what we all wanted.

DIsagree. Benji was preferred due to club politics. Reynolds should have been straight back in after his suspension ended.

100% he should have, we looked good before Grub was suspended, ***the club were too scared to drop Benji,*** and he gave them good reason to, the knights game was pathetic

and yet.......

Some short memories around here.

No short memory mate, I was talking about after Grub got suspended, Benji played some absolute shockers, but the club didn’t want to send Benji out from the bench. Benji deserved to be dropped, the club didn’t have the balls to do it

But did have the balls in June?

Politics had nothing to do with it. Reynolds wasnt good enough. Additionally none of us know what his attitude to training was like. If it was anything like his commitment at Brooky, that may have everything to do with it.

Sorry mate I can't agree, in June it wasn't the end of the road for Benji, in August/September it was, two completely different scenario's

And I can not agree with you. It makes zero sense. Maguire had zero problems dropping anyone on form all year and at the end of the year when our season was still on the line and his career and future earning potential, he simply wanted to be a good bloke to Benji? Mr Eggshells? You think that is the likely scenario? Because Maguire is noted for his soft side?

IMO that is ridiculous and some of the JR fanboys will invent anything to put their man in a good light. I genuinely dont get it. He is a poor player. At his BEST it was a struck match overall between him and Benji and there are clear signs that his attitude was not good.

Let me give you another hint that your "Madge just wanted to send off Benji in first grade" theory is rubbish. Benji was not offered a contract and was shown the door. That is how much Madge thought of him at the end of the year. Now with the glory of Benji gone and the club short another 5/8, surely its Reynolds time in the sun? No they punted him. HE IS NOT WANTED AND WASNT WANTED IN FIRST GRADE LAST YEAR. What makes you think that if Benji was dropped Madge wouldnt have used AD or Mbye instead? REynolds had more than enough chance to show what he was about. Problem for JR is he did exactly that.

No comparison for mine. The game this year against Roosters we had fallen behind badly, played well late in the first half and somehow were still in the game, grub comes on, 2 errors, gives away a penalty then let’s in a soft try under the posts - game over. Benji’s defense was bad but he did a lot more positive than Grub. He almost lead the league in try involvements.

Grub cost us against Souths earlier in the year with a brain explosion also.

Lol we were never winning that roosters game. We could have super subbed Hercules and still got demolished

The Reynolds “brain explosion” was a bit of an overreaction. Competing for the ball =/= deliberating kicking him in the head. If you watch the replay reynolds only has eyes for the ball, the centre would have appeared in a split second. And unless you have the fast twitch muscles of usain bolt, would have been almost impossible to pull out of

The modern game requires halves split on left and right side. You rarely see backline moves of #7 to #6. Given the demands of the modern game you need halves that can organise and anticipate. Reynolds is a jinking runner and a poor adlib passer that you can't really build an attack around. He is just frantic when he's out there, and it's just no surprise that he wasn't able to stay injury free with his ageing body. I'd guess he's not particularly intelligent and tended to largely overplay for us. Not a terrible squad player, and seemed to play with heart, but Benji played in front of him because he's just infinitely more capable at running an attack and organising a backline. And it's just not even close.

I think it shows how little people understand the game that they think there's some politics behind that move.

We probably weren’t going to beat Roosters but Reynolds made sure of it. And any Z grade player is taught to dive on that ball in the Souths game. Him being binned totally swung momentum. LBH Josh was a waste of space at Wests Tigers.
