Yes this has put those behind who would have played Canterbury Cup this year but on the other hand some of these players have trained with the NRL squad this year which is better than nothing. Then you have the other Flegg players who may have played CC in 2020 but missed out on the bubble. Some of these played Shield against the men & 20s (not the same I know) but many did not play at all. Not sure what happened to players like Felix Smith and Mavoni from the 2019 and still eligible in 2020 JF. Damn shame and not sure if either of them played this year.

Raising JF to 21 for next year is not going to achieve much for those that were 20 this year who were going to mainly play CC anyway? If there is a CC next year (& I believe there is a strong chance there won’t be), then playing JF at 21 might be beneficial.

At the end of the day, missing CC this year has been detrimental for most.

There's no reason CC shouldn't be on next year. There was very little reason for it to not be payed this year. Every single other level of the game is being played. Flegg and CC were the only grades cancelled. All age groups and comps from 6-60 were completed in some form.

I'm afraid the reason being given is $ due to COVID. JF will stay. Having been involved with others managing a CC club, the cost to run those competitions can be hundreds of thousands so not small fry. It's not confirmed yet but I have been reliably informed that it is very much on the cards. This would be partly why Snoop is being mentioned as the new first grade assistant coach to Madge.

Let's hope the cancellation will not eventuate because the Top 30 need game time somewhere and if there is still a bubble how will they get it?

That is the reason Canterbury Cup didn't resume as NRL squad members are in the NRL bubble..

It will be much of the same into next year by the looks of it..unless protocols are changed

And if your hoping / expecting your CC players to put you into finals contention .....really

More it will be the same as far as developing players mainly juniors if Canterbury Cup doesn't return in '21

Some clubs can attract top nrl talent, others need to rely on developing juniors.

If there's no CC there's no development of juniors and many careers will be over before they begin.

I find it very hard to believe a code with a billion dollar tv deal can't spare a million bucks to help run the CC and ensure the league has a pipeline of young players that aren't lost to the sport forever.

You'd have to create a complete new bubble ..say U/19 to U23 ..it starts getting expensive when you don't know exactly where the future is heading ...maybe if it is untelevised

Expand the NRL bubble to 40-45 and include CC.

Do they really need a bubble though? It all seems frivolous given bubbles don't exist anywhere else.

No more development of guys like Kei, Simpkin, Hoffman Madden not play actual games of rugby league..as well as the fringe guys just being tackle dummies at training..

All clubs are in the same boat .....stop trotting out the excuses

Some clubs can attract top nrl talent, others need to rely on developing juniors.

Problem is these reserve grade boys don’t get paid that much if they’re not in the top 30. They work full time so some of them can’t really isolate into a bubble if they’re working full times and supporting partners or kids

Only way reserve grade would run is if the NRL bubble is not as strict as far as I can tell because if there’s still a strict bubble on the players then it won’t really work. Other age groups are fine as they won’t need to come in contact with the NRL players and all the coaching staff they can be separate

I guess the other issue is they could earn far more if they weren't in the bubble

AFL seemed be able to more freely organize scratch matches between players coming back from injury / rookies etc

Schoolboys on at the moment, patrician brothers against st Greg’s. Shame it’s behind a paywall but the streams here for anyone: https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/schoolboy-cup/nrl-schoolboy-cup-patrician-brothers-blacktown-vs-st-gregorys-college/news-story/cedf8dcbb41c1246ea24c37409257e0f

St Gregs got hammered. Were always going to be up against it, playing against a classy side and having a team full of boarders who had returned home to their families in the country prior to being called back for footy. The article i read prior to game also said their fullback and five-eight never made it back as they had started apprenticeships.

Pats brothers scored some ridiculous tries too from what I saw. Lots of talent in that team

Or just create an extra bubble for CC players.

Most players at that level would benefit more from playing regular games than training at nrl level.

NRL players still leave their houses and their families still interact with others. It's a flawed system thrown together in a state of panic for a certain period of time, but now it's time to get back to normal.
