Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

My god. Luck is not on Balmain's side today. First set after ht, Tigers march downfield and put up a bomb. Souths winger has absolutely no idea and it hits his foot bouncing towards Tigers. Van Drie picks it up 2 on 1, just gets his arm hit causing the ball to hit the ground. Bunnies pick it up and race the length of field to score. Down 22 to 4.
Damn

Turning very scrappy from both sides here. We have had a few chances but just can't ice it. Need to get Xavier more ball in good field position.

52-4 .. jeez that’s a concerning result for a team that started 4 on the trot

Hopefully that’s the learning curve out of the way nice and early
Uncharacteristic of this Balmain team but not a completely surprising scoreline in any game of Ball this season. Souths are the pick of the teams so far - fast, organised and rough. They ovwrwhelmed Wests in a similar way albeit without the scoreline. Balmain have not dominated any game this season but have been fitter and better organised than any of their opponents. Missed their x-factor fullback Logan Brookes when this game was close.

Results and standing of the juniors following the weekend games.

Both Regional teams are going well. They have their final rounds this Saturday before finals.
Both Girls teams are going well. They are both keeping themselves in contention and have byes this weekend which helps.
Both Harold Mathews teams are struggling. Balmain have the bye this weekend, whilst Wests host the Warriors. Hopefully both can bank points.
SG Ball is pretty intriguing. Balmain were awful and Wests really strong. Its been pretty much the opposite for most of the year. Balmain have a tough game and Wests an easier one this weekend.

Good luck to all.

Dont discount the Raiders side. They are quietly dispatching all in front of them so far.

Starting to like the momentum our Wests Magpies SG Ball side are building. The whole team has started to gel after so many kids were training with Flegg, NSW Cup and NRL pre season training. In particular, Phoenix Godinet has been absolutely outstanding. They will be in the mix come semi's and with the newly introduced 8 team final series now every other team needs to be ready for our boys.

What has become clear is our recruitment is once again, not good enough. Our squads lack X factor, lots of plodders and players with very slim chances of progressing.
Also there's a huge concern regarding the jack of halves at the club in our lower grades. You could argue that we don't have any decent halves between both Balmains and Wests in both Matt's and Ball, Balmain with a few ok prospects in Benson and Tannous, Haywood is good at hooker and hopefully brookes is back soon. But across these 4 teams there's not a single playmaker with a decentralized kicking game, nor running game.

Yes we have a bottleneck of young elite talent at the top grade but that's no excuse for not having good halves in every grade. Losing the likes of Isdale and Conti and not replacing them, it's not good enough. Either the scouts judgement are off or we just don't understand the importance of having good halves, which is unfathomable.

Do we have a halves academy? Next step for Tigers. I’d probably go one better and create a playmaker academy so not to pigeonhole talented ball players into specific positions too early.

Everyone wants to be the flashy ball running playmaker. They are the ones that get all the glory from commentators and casual fans. Look at Galvin. He has some great highlights and for some thats enough to pay him well over a million a year as a 19 year old in his second season!
Being the orchestrating half is a lot more boring. They go a lot more unnoticed by the masses - but they are far more important. This is the player we need to cultivate
A good example is season 2005. A lot of people will tell you (Im one of them) that Prince was the reason for the premiership. The majority think we couldnt have done it without Benji. Theres merit to both arguments, but Id add that when Prince left, the club fell in a heap for years, despite the dynasty talk. The type of player is rare and we dont have any.
