Juniors - Pathways General Discussion

Such a crafty ball player and runner. Reads the
game superbly. Would be a waste of his talents
to stick him on the edge before trialing him in
the halves. Maybe even centre as some said
Interesting. It’s often underestimated how valuable a ball playing backrower can be. Think about what Luke Lewis became at the Sharks. Granted that was towards the end of his career and he started on the wing / centres. Big halves seldom make it in the nrl I see him having a similar ability to play to that as Shuster did in his first full season but with a much better engine. I don’t understand the arguement sometimes how a talented half would be wasted playing backrow. You wouldn’t utilise a Liam Martin style of play with him.

Don't think you're wrong mate. Could def see
him on an edge later in his career. Lewis is a
good comparison, can kick, can pass. This kid is pretty special, reminds me of a young Larkham lol

back row is better than the centres because you could actually run shapes off him similar to if he was playing 6. he could easily run pass or kick at a similar click to how he does in the halves just one pass further out. he will likely start off in the halves but back row is his position long term.

i feel like i sound like a broken record, but imagine Large, Galvin, Makasini and Luke Laulili’i on the left edge, Latu and Samuela on the right with Kit and Tallyn running the middle third and Jahream swinging around the back.

Do you see Mason fitting in somewhere ?
Would you say his pace is elite or just slightly above average ?

hard to say at the minute, but I do like him as a 14 in future. can play at fullback, in the halves and at lock and hooker at a pinch. has played halves his entire life so very curious to see how the club views him moving forward.

Galvin impressive as captain for Australian Schoolboys over Junior Kumuls yesterday. Scored one and played a hand in their 3 other tries, including a significant part in the match winning try with 4 minutes to go.There really is something about this kid and stepping up in the big games!

Excited to see what he can do in Tigers colours in the coming years!

Are you talking Large in the centres? I thought he was supposed to definitely be a 5/8? Happy to be corrected.

How many of these guys are realistic chances of playing consistent footy next year in first grade?
We need to buy some more players.

I was surprised to see Jordan miller in the top 30 next year it seemed he was a fair way behind blokes like kit after missing most of last season I'm glad though I have high hopes for him.
very raw at the minute, but this is what happens when you’re a struggling club and other teams come knocking. our forward depth is good enough for us to protect him in the short term but he has a lot of work to do thru preseason and the first few months of next year to be ready for Cup, let alone first grade.

Probably just Da Silva and both Fainu's and maybe Kit Laulilii later in the year.

Possibly Faagutu if he kicks on a bit.
So you think 5 of them?
I’d suggest we are in big big trouble if that many young players become consistent first graders next year.

Look at the size of the kid. Heaps of skills and a big body.
The thing is he's the same height as Seyfarth, but maybe 10kgs lighter, if not more. Seyfarth struggled in the pack for a long time because he was a beanpole. Only now is he starting to make some headway, and he was always a forward.
Galvin playing second row in junior reps against other skinny kids is one thing, but up against the monsters in the nrl he'll get ragdolled. We don't want him making 30 tackles a game either. He needs to give his body time to fill out and have a few off-seasons in the gym and then fore sure it will be a possibility. Maybe one day he and Samuela will be our back row as @Needaname suggests, but it won't be in the next few years imo

I reckon the plan is for both Latu Fainu and Lachlan Galvin to have big pre seasons adding a bit of muscle to their frames and both be given early opportunities in the halves with our NRL side.
Although it’s no doubt he could play other positions, I think we risk losing Galvin if we don’t at least give him a chance to play in the halves.
Not many young players have a junior career like he has and I think he could be one of the exceptions who could potentially jump straight from SG Ball to NRL.

Some big names in the squad, but you would hope that we prioritise Jersey Flegg/Cup training/game time of some players instead giving them a long season with SG Ball at the start of it.

Apparently we have picked up a few Manly players from their Harold Matts winning squad a few years back (the side that had the Fainu brothers and Feledy).

The in-the-know NBWT from Twitter says this:

Manly junior reps Roy Quiroz-Mapusua, the Taotua twins Max and Mitch, Tevita Tukuafu, Calvin Levy and Joshua Weightman have joined the Wests Magpies #SGBall squad for 2024.

the biggest question is around who out of Top 30/Development/T&T will actually play SG Ball. TDS is no chance, especially if we shop Simpkin. Kit I think is pretty unlikely. Miller, Galvin and even Mason are 50/50 at this stage depending on how they fare in preseason. I'd expect Craig and L. Laulili'i to be involved heavily.

the calibre and depth of these outside backs for this squad is incredible. Craig, L. Laulili'i, Waqa, Willett, Gallagher, Oitmann, Quiroz-Mapusua, Fuatimau and Colquhoun, plus new recruits Max Taotua and Calvin Levy. Joey Saukuru is going to have his work cut out for him sorting out who the back five is to begin the year.

Keppie should partner Mason at the scrumbase, but Dion Williams (Westfields Sports halfback) and even Tajh Colquhoun could push for selection. will be interesting to see what the plan is there.

the majority of our Ball pack last year has now graduated to Flegg and beyond, so guys like Miller, Folaumetoui, Xuereb and Leatigaga will be relied on heavily you'd think. Mitchell Taotua looks an excellent prospect in the back row, so credit to Fulton on that one. coupled with year youngs in Laupepa, Schaafhausen-Mino and Kohan Lewis I think we have a pack there that can lay the platform and do some damage.

very bullish about this side's prospects for the title this year, even without Kit, TDS and potentially Miller, Galvin and Mason. super exciting times at Wests for both Matts and Ball next year.
