Justin Olam #281

Defense is attitude. BA talked about Parramatta playing their best when they wanted the collision.

It’s been a long time since a WT side truly wanted the collision. We normally jag wins when our opponent doesn’t show up for it either.

It comes with signing guys who come for the dough primarily.

I actually defending these days is more about a team's collective understanding of what to do in defensive situations less a player's individual attributes. Success is more about good decision making as unit rather than just putting raw effort into tackles.

A players defensive ability isn't 'modular'. You can't swap it out like graphics cards or car batteries and expect the same kind of performance say, from a marquee edge back rower who moves from the Storm to the Tigers. It's not like FIFA.

Lineup changes are the bane of defensive coaches. If the and the guy next you have played 90 games together, sometimes that's more valuable in real terms than just buying a former rep player in that position from 7 years ago and plonking him in there. It takes good coaching to get it setup, but also just playing enough matches in with the same damned team long enough to learn and build up that collective approach. That's what we don't really factor in enough and are always left scratching our heads at why forwards don't fire for our club like others.

You're correct, effort is the first and most important thing, but more as a coherent unit and not just individuals.

They often call it playing for the bloke next to you. Comes much easier if you didn’t just meet the guy and actually have a human connection.

Actually, it was this one. Watch from the 53 second mark. There are slow motion views after the normal speed version. No arms were involved in that tackle. He's be charged with a grade 3 shoulder charge is he did that here.

Olam hit on Sam Walker

Yet I see him doing exactly what he should. He can see the overlap, so he is going to hit the playmaker hard and try to disrupt the flow.

Walker gets that pass off, try (as what happened).

Man we get the player closest to Steve Matai and people don't like the guy. Olam, Rip in and go you son of a gun!

Gavet came same time as Taupau I'd fancy....
Gavet started well, But faded late in the season and came with plenty of off fied stuff.
Ava tried hard but was never really top tier.
I can't believe the regard Gacet is held in on this forum. Had a couple decent games out of just the 13 he managed to play in 2 years. Never kicked on elsewhere either. Sue and Ava at least racked up plenty of games for the club but that shows how poor our side was. They were really only the quality of fringe first graders and were considered as such when playing elsewhere.
Yes they all enjoyed the contact but none were ever dominant.

I was listening to a podcast yesterday they were talking about a friend of theirs who was out one night and was sitting next to Justin Olam. They didn’t know who he was and asked him what he does…
He replied humbly “I play a bit football”. They asked where and what code. He said Melbourne and NRL. This person didn’t know anything about RL and started talking about other stuff but said Olam is super intelligent and has a University Degree in Applied Physics.
I think he’ll have a lot of involvement in the set up of PNG after he finishes playing

He said previously if you want to have a PNG team in the NRL you want to have PNG players representing the club so you need the proper pathways. I am sure he will assist with that.

Reminds me of where I used to go fishing in Balmain. There's a housing commission on one side of the street and multi million dollar apartments on the other side.
Used to chat with the bloke thinking he lived in the housing commission (based on how he dressed, spoke etc)...
Then one day he asked me to come out on his boat...... it ends up he's LOADED living in a top floor penthouse apartment, over looking the harbour.

Yep, he’s dead smart. One of the reasons I didn’t mind him coming here, but also one of the reasons that concerned me. Smart people are usually too smart to bash their body up for to long, and at what stage would he be clocking it in as self preservation. But he has gone had the ops, so maybe he isn’t done yet?

Never judge a book by its cover !

I’m sure he’s another guy wanting to prove he’s not a spent force, especially with a hot pair of halves inside him. Just another sub plot in season 25. Can’t wait !
