Latrell Mitchell Contract Discussion

Just quickly, everyone’s saying that if he stays at Roosters he’ll play reserve grade.

Is that even confirmed? Like I haven’t seen a quote or anything just a report via the media - and I don’t think Roosters will watch a player like Latrell play NSW cup when they’re contending for a premiership

I still see Souths as a contender for LM. If that Burgess money comes through, which I suspect it will eventually, I think LM may sign there. And Roosters say they won't let him go there early, (even if that's true,) but I don't know whether they would really put him in Reserves for a whole year. When was the last time a club even did that? Broncos with Tallis in the 90s?

I don't see many marquee players ready to be picked up for 2020, so likely the money is still there for Lattrell.

Most of the players we would be chasing are for 2021 when we have a lot more money available under cap.

Mixed feelings.. LM is a mighty player on his day but I'm so proud that the Tigers management have taken this stance

So now we're saying the door is still open???

If we've pulled the offer the door should be closed, otherwise what does it actually mean to pull the offer?

This is just ridiculous now.

We've either closed the door or we haven't, if we haven't, then the offer hasn't been pulled.

Seems like he's called our bluff

Nothing is as black and white as you make out. It’s always shades of grey. The dichotomy is false. Personally I am happy the door is still open. Doesn’t mean he will come but it is good business sense.

So now he knows the offer hasn't been withdrawn and we're still waiting for him, so nothing has changed right?

You seem to only hear what you want to suit your agenda. In contract law there is offer and acceptance, we made an offer which he can accept or not, at this stage he has not.

However that money offered is tied up until such time he accepts the offer or not which means we can’t offer that money to anyone else.

Withdrawing the offer means we are no longer by law obligated to provide that contract and we can offer that money to someone else. If Latrell comes back to us before that money is used then the door is open, if the money has already been used to sign another player then the offer won’t be the same.

C'mon man, Latrell is just laughing at us now.

He's played us the whole time, now he's making us look stupid and desperate, if he wanted to be here he would have signed already.
Now we're pretending to be tough and come across as if we're in control by saying we've "pulled his offer"
But then come across like fools by saying "but the door is still open" (if you want to wipe your feet on us again one last time)

It's the old "you didn't fire me, I quit" game and we're losing.

WAKE UP you fools

I'll tell you one thing keep calling forum users fools...and you wont have to worry about it again...

I can’t see Souths as a contender, the Burgess money will be going towards Arrow I think, Cody Walker will also be getting an upgrade if he stays as he’s off contract, along with Cam Murray as of November 1 next year which he will probably be seeking a very large upgrade also....

Very happy with the decision today... The door is still open for him but he will need to make up his mind pretty quick.. He will very soon understand his management have cost him a lot of money and we are not a bad option..

There is not much left for this year in quality players but there is quite a few for 2021 so I would be chasing hard for some of them and if we snag one there club might consider a release early so they can spend that money elsewhere..

We released Matterson and Marsters early and now our best hope is to POSSIBLY sign Luciano Leilua and Zane Musgrove. I think this leaves us with a weaker squad than 2019. Paying $2000 for Season Tickets to NOT make the Semis again is a decision that will haunt me

Luciano is 100% with us, all pieces are falling in place and the Pom confirmed it

But we were told "We won't be releasing Matterson early unless it benefits Wests Tigers" we've negatively impacted our squad by releasing him BEFORE we had a better player secured.

It benefited us by not having to pay him a cent from his 2020 contract when we did...meanwhile the Rorters are paying Mitchell 14K a week to go fishing

That makes zero sense, Maybe I'm missing something.

Wests had a player who was worth ~ double what they were playing him but had a contract. That's sports. They did not have to release him but if they did, they would want market value for him, not what his contract was for.

So no, they didn't save 350 from 2020, they lost a 600+k player they were paying 350k for. That 350k will mean sweet FA in the cap situation and that move has greatly weakened the team.

I'm still at a loss to know what Wests got from the "deal". Apart from shafted. again. By poor management. Again.

Just like what Geo said... What's the matter son didn't want to be here so he was released... he will just cause a heap of problems and that WEAKENS the team

geez some people don't look at the whole picture... shortsightedness ???

Huh? I agree, people do not look at the long term picture..... Regardless of him not wanting to play with the club or not, he had a contract. Matto at 70% effort would be better than what is at the club now. Add to that the precedent that's been now been cemented with the latest turncoat to run to parra is if you dont like the club, just leave when you want.

Wests had a real chance to either get a player of RM market value or send a strong signal that he can rot in reggies. RM you would think would want to play well to get the next contract so he wouldve played in the firsts. If you think that wests proving to be a soft target, again, is sort sighted...well, you're just naive

If he was not already on the outer with most of the squad, then I too would have enforced the contract and/or demanded something in return. As it is, the club has saved about $30k of cap money thus far for this past month by releasing Matterson and that will be put toward his replacement.

I agree, the team is more important than the individual and we have all seen what players running the club can do but was he on the outer leading up to the ship jumping or did the contract talk create the unrest? i recall reading robbie really talking him up.

Anyways, is what it is, have to just move on..

That's my take Happy. Progress plan B to be the new plan A at pace, and the original plan A becomes plan B or C or nevermind. Time will determine that.
I'll be content to leave the Latrell negotiations in the too hard basket unless he personally comes and lifts them out. Don't wait, don't look back.

The longer it dragged on, the more desperate the club looked, so I am pleased they've stood their ground and pulled the offer. I'm not as enthusiastic about JAC as others seem to be. I hope that's not what we end up with as our "marquee" signing after all the cash we have atm.

I don't think they looked desperate at all. Why do you look desperate chasing an elite player?

The club would have certainly looked desperate if they signed him on the conditions he wanted.

The rumour is they pulled the offer so Lattrel would take it as a wake up call, as he has no other offers for 2020, in the hope they could start negotiations afresh. Which means another month of fun.

Sorry to be a pain, but are you able to maybe summarize the story here from the Chairman ??

First thing is he spoke (seemingly) straight and honest. Really rates LM, withdrew offer after negotiations stalled. Door is not closed, slightly ajar and he would welcome LM with open arms. Worth a listen if you get a chance. on ~3 minutes.

T1 summary is
1) we need certainty and we weren’t getting that from LM camp
2) LM is a good kid and we can understand why there is uncertainty
3) if LM camp come back to the Tigers with certainty and we have cash to spend he will be very welcome.
4) very active player market if we have an offer on the table that cash cannot be used on other players = we can now look further into the player market.

I work with a guy in the mix at the Roosters. I asked him if Latrell was coming to the Tigers and he said if he doesn’t sign with someone, there’s only one option for him - reserve grade. From what I gathered he/his management have done something to really put the club offside. They certainly don’t want him there.

His manager seems hopeless.

Who else does he manage, ponga doesn’t he?

Latrell is a great player, but he didn't want to be here. Maybe he sounded keen when they spoke to him, but that's probably him being polite. If anything I think his management has been trying to convince latrell to sign, hence the stalling tactics, hoping the lack of offers elsewhere will persuade him . It doesn't make sense the other way round. Managers get paid when players do, this is the biggest salary on offer (only salary), what's their motivation to ruin this deal? It's latrell hiding behind his manager. I really like latrell, still do, just unfortunate he doesn't want to be here. Club obviously misinterpreted the level of interest from latrell.
