I just don't get the Tigers....its clear we are the only club chasing Latrell...so why pay overs for him?

Offer him $800k + the fullback role he wants and that's it....take it or....?

We are paying JRey that amount.
Doubt any manager would accept that deal -, it would be an insult and would serve no purpose.

Cleary duded us with the JRey contract...he was only ever worth what the Dogs offered which was $450-$500k.

We know we over paid and so does everyone else. No way would we attract LM to come over from the Roosters for same money.

I really like what Lee has said so far, and I've heard more from him in two days than I heard from Barry in however long he was here, but unless we've got Latrell than saying "it would be recognition that the club is heading in the right direction by securing players of that calibre" is a rookie mistake if he doesn't eventually sign. It ends up saying the exact opposite to that statement and makes us look amateurish, not that we need help with that.

Lee seems like a smart guy, so I hope he's talking publicly with more knowledge than us. I just think those sorts of statements should only ever be made when players have already signed.

I get that he's trying to woo Mitchell in the media, and support him publicly when others haven't, but I think you can say those things without making the club so vulnerable to scorn.

Anyway, just my observation on what has been a compelling 85 page thread.

I'm still hopeful we sign him and I basically agree with what Lee says it would prove about our clubs merits if it does happen. I particularly like the contract figures that have been suggested, I think that's a great deal for us and I'd have been happy even if he was over 1 mil a season from next year.

And I like Mitchell a lot more than Holmes. I don't think Holmes has anywhere near the physical force and creative spark that Mitchell has. He's a great runner with great speed and he's skilful, but I don't think he's at latrell's level.

Lee is very smart. In the last couple of days he has publicly acknowledged how valued Latrell Mitchell will be at our club. I read elsewhere that one if the things Latrell was upset about was not feeling valued at the Rorters. Lee is giving him the right message.

Pretty confident Wests Tigers will get Mitchell across the line..

At this point it’s become a bit of a joke really.

It is if you insist on finding the negative in anything.

Source : https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl/teams/cowboys/cowboys-to-sign-valentine-holmes-for-2020-but-pass-on-latrell-mitchell/news-story/faab20dcf0f275aa6812e68b69377d42

Valentine Holmes has agreed to join the Cowboys in a multimillion-dollar move that is set to crush Latrell Mitchell’s dreams of playing for North Queensland.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Holmes has decided he will be a Cowboy in 2020 and only an eleventh-hour change of heart will see the Queensland Origin star continue chasing his NFL dream in New York.

The Cowboys are treading carefully and have not ruled out making a play for Mitchell as the club sizes up fullback prospects for 2020 and beyond.

However, Holmes is planning to ink a multi-year deal worth about $1 million-a-season with the Cowboys, which would kill the possibility of Mitchell joining North Queensland.

Mitchell, 22, dined with key Cowboys officials in Townsville on Monday night as the disgruntled Rooster explores his NRL options.

But salary cap constraints are set to thwart any potential bid from North Queensland for the Kangaroos centre, who Wests Tigers are prepared to offer $4 million for four years to play fullback.

**Mitchell has a genuine interest in playing for the Cowboys**, but North Queensland cannot offer him the $1 million-a-season he is seeking given they already have Michael Morgan and Jason Taumalolo on big money contracts, and are expecting to sign Holmes.

Cowboys club legend Johnathan Thurston said it would be ideal for North Queensland to finalise their roster as soon as possible to begin preparations for 2020 after finishing 14th last season.

“It’s a very complex situation,” Thurston said.

“If Valentine’s NFL dream keeps going then Latrell would be a handy addition for the Cowboys.

“If Latrell makes the decision to join the Cowboys, then I don’t know where that leaves Val. If Latrell decides to move on to the Tigers, that leaves the door open for Val.

“They would both be new to the structures of the Cowboys and getting to learn those.

“While they are very smart footballers and would pick it up quickly, you need to spend some time with them to get to know those defensive and offensive structures.

“They’re both great footballers and can win a game on their own. To have either of them at the club would be a handy addition. To have both of them really puts the Cowboys in premiership contention.”

Didn’t realise Mitchell had a genuine interest in playing for the Cowboys. Oh well he’ll just have to settle for the booby prize instead.

All marquee signings come with risk but few have as much ability as Latrell and he is only 22. If it comes off it will be the one no one saw coming.

@Telltails To me the impressive thing is his age, he has accomplished a lot at such a young age, I think a change of club will do him good, he now has more challenges and goals, very little wiggle room for complacency (hopefully)

I would suggest Latrell is the biggest signing since Ellery Hanley.

Well, I have at least two things in common with our new chair, one being a tiger then WT supporter and our opinion of Mitchell's potential impact. I think my first post on the matter was that Latrell has those similar rare abilities as Hanley and Inglis to make a huge impact and nothing has changed my mind since.

If anything, apart from the dollars, which most chase anyway, I really feel that he wants to be leader and legacy type player. All that is left is for him to take up the WT offer, and if not, oh well, they tried.

This kid is far beyond the realm of reach of any fan browsing the September 2019 forum when we missed out on the semis again and seemed to be in cap debt for the next 2 or 3 years.
If we sign Latrell we are so far ahead of where we thought we would be it's not funny for season 2020, let alone if we get Leilua as well as the extension of a 23 year old Twal (who was apparently out he door).
On top of that we have signed up Lee as Chairman who is quite possibly the freshest thing to hit this place since Naiqama's haircut. Things are certainly looking up in Tiger Town and Pascoe is far from the fool many wanted to say he was.

??????? possible comment of the off-season!!!

What ...because I understand that footy games aren't won by outside backs

Because I understand we lost arguably our best forward and then arguably our 2nd best forward when fit

Said it a million times , you might have the best 7,6 and 1 those blokes in the 8,10,11,12 and 13 jerseys can't build a platform you lose a lot of footy games

Sorry for the dose of reality

Yeah they sucked so much I'm amazed we got to 9th..like ever

Can't believe people are going to be disappointed to sign Latrell Mitchell..

Gee Geo 9th ...easily satisfied

Not knocking his signing IF it happens ..my issue is people's expectation if he does sign ...we won't become contenders overnight

And you know we need forwards badly ..we are massively undermanned for 2020 in the forwards

If we have spent a million it only leaves 700 k for 4 players ....we will get some absolute superstars for that money ..especially back rowers and props

That’s assuming no one else is being shipped off ...don’t give up on that happening just yet.

@happy_tiger

This is what TPAs are used for. If ws can take 200-300k off his salary then were in a good spot.

I agree we are undermanned. The offer is 800k for next year leaving $900k. McQueen from reports is likely to sign an extended deal overseas which could add another 400k. Realistically that could fund Lomax, Tetevano, Leilua, Britain.
That would change the team drastically with Mitchell at fullback.

OK so what about a back row ....Lawrence , Garner

Top sides will just follow Mitchell everywhere and shut him down , especially if we don't have any targets to take pressure off him

Originally when I heard LM rejected the Roosters offer of 800k I thought he was pretty crazy. That’s an awesome deal for a centre.

When the rumours of him being linked to us started and after all the Matterson drama, I was probably a little concerned LM might’ve been chucking a bit of a sook to get more money. Maybe he only wanted out because they wouldn’t upgrade his deal from 450k next year to the reported 800k he wanted and would then only offer him a max of 800k from 2021 onwards because they only needed him as a centre. The last thing I wanted was another greedy sook playing for the club.

I also remembered a conversation I’d had with a mate a while back who’s involved with the Roosters. It was around the time the rumours of Teddy leaving started and he said that Latrell loved playing centre. Now, maybe things have changed, it was while ago, but I was a little suss on Latrell’s motives for wanting to change position again. Was it purely about money, or did he honestly want the challenge and just knew Teddy was their long-term #1? I guess I just tried to keep an open mind.

Latrell’s a young dad who’s openly commented about wanting to finish up with footy by 30 so I can sort of understand why money might be part of his motivation.

My biggest concern though and ultimately the most important part with signing LM is that he has to genuinely want to return to fullback. That changes the whole conversation about money! 800k as a centre is top dollar. As a fullback - different story. But he has to genuinely want it, not just say that’s the reason to score more money from some poor sucker like us who needs some quality.

If he genuinely wants to play fullback, is willing to get his fitness up, find the consistency and involvement he’s lacked in the past and look after his mental health then he could end up our greatest marquee signing.

If he’s not genuine, and it’s all about the money...well he could just end up being remembered as one of those overpaid millionaire players that everyone couldn’t wait to move on. Surely you’d want to live up to the expectation.

With all that being said, the talk of a staggered 4 year contract is the best way to go. If the numbers are correct (800k/900k/1m/1.1m) then that’s a pretty good deal for a player with the talent of LM as a long-term fullback.

He’s marketable, will attract quality players, has x-factor and can shred a team in half on his day. Let’s just hope he wants to come here with the right intentions and help make us a premiership threat.
