Uncle Nick doing everything he can to help us here...

Tigers boss: If Latrell's serious about switch, we'll re-open negotiations
DECEMBER 11, 2019
Brad Walter
Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis believes Latrell Mitchell has the opportunity to be part of an exciting new era at the club and confirmed his Sydney Roosters counterpart Nick Politis was supportive of the out-of-favour star moving to Concord.

With Politis and Roosters coach Trent Robinson, according to a NewsCorp report, telling Mitchell on Tuesday that there was no longer the salary cap space to extend his contract after he expressed as desire in an NRL.com interview to remain with the back-to-back premiers, the 22-year-old needs to find a new club.

The Tigers had been the early favourites but withdrew their offer, understood to be valued at almost $1 million per season, after he did not act on it quickly and continued to gauge interest from other clubs.

However, the Tigers made it clear they were prepared to re-open negotiations and Hagipantelis said on Wednesday they were still interested if Mitchell showed a desire to join the club.

"We are actively in the market considering a number of options that are available to us and if Latrell is to be one of those options he is more than welcome to reach out to us," Hagipantelis said.

"At the moment I don’t think we are under any particular pressure, we have got a really talented and healthy roster but it is an active player market at the moment and we want to make sure we are a competitor in that market."

Despite the Tigers announcing that they had withdrawn their offer two weeks ago, Hagipantelis said he had remained in contact with Politis about Mitchell’s future at the Roosters, where he remains contracted for next season.

The Roosters have indicated they would release Mitchell for the 2020 Telstra Premiership and Hagipantelis believes Politis would support him joining the Tigers.

"I have spoken to Nick Politis and I don’t have any doubt about that, I am sure the Nick would be supportive of that," Hagipantelis said.

"Nick has been incredibly transparent throughout this process. He has called me chairman to chairman as a professional courtesy, which I am very appreciative of, and kept us informed.

"Nick has not involved himself in any sort of discussions or negotiations or anything of that kind. It was simply as a professional courtesy to inform me of what the Roosters' position was."

Crazy mad all this and still he won't sign! I'd love to have Mitchell onboard here, I mean in all honesty who wouldn't? However, I must admit with the way it's all been playing out, the whole process is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. We have two very influential blokes in cahoots trying to push a player in a direction he clearly doesn't want to go, despite the big money carrot dangling in front of him! It's like trying to put a cat in a carrier to take it to the vet - if anyone has ever tried it, you'll know what I mean.

Just because he wanted to stay at the club he’s been at since he was 16, does not mean he thinks our club is the plague. If he moves on to us, he’ll get on with the job, like the hundreds of other players who have left clubs they love.

So, who are these other supposed options? Billy Britten?

Was wondering the same thing. Apart from Latrell there is very little on offer for next season, certainly no marquee players available, unless someone is on the move and we don't yet know about it?

Is getting gagai and Johnston really that bad though

Yes.

Ok . Why ? They're good footballers. Better than we have now . Im not being smart , I'm just curious . Is it they're not good footballers ? Or they're over priced ? In which case then at what price would they not be ?

I don't really rate Johnston. He's fast in open space but that's about the most he offers. He has scored a lot of tries on the end of the Rabbitohs back line but I feel like we've stung by someone else who did something similar recently...

Essentially a winger manufactured into a fullback. Much like our fullback.

'Cept ours is lot better and cheaper.

I think it needs to be noted that LM’s origin hopes for next year seem to be already diminished, last thing I want to hear next season if Latrell signs with tigers is that it was the tigers signing that kept him out of origin.
If he plays extremely well next season (for whatever team) do you think he will be selected for origin?

Love having uncle Nick on our side, sounds like even the Roosters want him here more than anywhere else. **Repaying us for Teddy.**

That would indicate that they actually had a heart! More likely they feel sorry for us lol

I have a mate who is friends with Latrell and he reckons that Latrell really wants to come to the Tigers but the Tigers haven't been offering the same as other clubs are. Latrell apparently said that the Tigers were always the first option for him.

I think Trell is having him on.

Doing all he can so he doesn't end up at souths. Which is fine by me. Tiger Trell ?

The article was orchestrated. I think Mitchell’s options dried up and his last play was to go back to the Roosters and door was shut. Sounds to me Nick was doing him a favour and called the Tigers to help him out. If the article is correct the deal is done this week. I have no knowledge on this just a guess.

Hope you are right... But I think it needs to be this week or next as this needs to be sorted before the xmas break... Need the player to know where he is going and clear his head prior to day 1 of pre-season..

Biggest problem here is that we are Latrell's 'last resort'.

Only resort really. Sign a 3 year deal with us for big bucks, and then Rabbitohs will come knocking after that.
He will leave and so be it, hopefully in that time frame he’s helped us build and helped us recruit some young indigenous stars

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/rapid-growth-for-indigenous-population-of-sydney-20190531-p51t7i.html

While Redfern and Waterloo have been a focus for Indigenous politics and culture, the western suburbs and the Central Coast now host Greater Sydney’s largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations

Pretty clear where he needs to be to make a difference and be the leader he should be.

Is getting gagai and Johnston really that bad though ? If it comes to that , that is ! They both are very good footballers , and would definitely walk into our backline.
People are calling it the booby prize , but in a vacuum excusing LM , would you have taken them at half price for example ? At the moment the tigers should be in the "upgrade where ever possible " game .
Sometimes it's a big signing, most other times it's a slow , arduous process , that's usually murky to the point of appearing like a backward step .
When we set out this off season it was about improving the team . Matteson is definitely a backward step from last year , however I feel him being so hated , would have lead to a net loss next year with him in the team.
But apart from that , it's low risk high upside signings , which improve them team.
I think we win no matter what is my point .
We get LM , sweet !
We get the other 2 subsidised , sweet ! Improvement should be the name of the game

It would be VERY bad. Both of those players barely improve our team if at all. Neither would be cheap.

If you get players who are say 10% better than our players then you may improve us by that 10% improvement, but if you sign them to a 3 year deal you are tying yourself to an only 10% improvement for 3 years, plus they are both towards the end of their productive careers.

Whereas if you either get a Latrell who is (say) a 100% improvement, you get the obvious big jump in performance, or even more likely Id rather sign a young kid with a big potential for improvement.

Signing borderline better players is entrenching mediocrity, which is where we have been for 10 years.

We are offering him almost 1 million a season. Don't see how other clubs are offering more.

Apparently he wanted time off on certain days to visit family at Taree.

Don't believe anything unless it's official from the Club..

Geo - I assume you consider me an official club source. If so you are 100% correct.

No, they just want him off their books

If I were Pascoe here is what I'd offer LM...

Offer a 3 year deal 2020-2022.

2020:
Get the Roosters to kick in $500k for 2020, kick in $350k to top up it to $850k.
2021-2022:
$950-$1m + fullback.

Use him for 3 years them let him go elsewhere(Rabbits).

We are in the box seat, no other club can offer him a decent $$ contract....his options are limited to us and us!
