Ive been thinking about this, and this bypassing of the cap that Souths have done shouls be an ATO matter.

If LM took our $1m/year deal (lets say it was an even $1m) then he has to pay tax on that, and he gets maybe $650k after tax.

But taking Souths $600k, he gets maybe $450k. Now you add the benefits given to his hanger-ons, and theres no income tax on that, so it just takes another $200k and hes broken even.

Souths (& likely the Roosters, and Storm) are cheating the ATO out of taxes that the players should be paying.

So is James Packer and his mates.... and 70% of Australians via their returns

Fringe benefits tax.

Interesting read including what dad and Latrell think about Maguire

After reading that story I’m glad he’s gone to the crap hole club he belongs at.
I’ll leave it at that so I don’t get booted off the forum.

Who would of thought that the Roosters showed our club some respect and help in the LM saga ! Unlike that low rent club at Redfern ...especially when there greatest ever signing was not pulled into line basically intimating OUR club is garbage and would of been one of his greatest mistakes he could of made !
Lets hope the players at our club do not forget what was said and how low and insignificant that the club at Redfern think there talent and the jersey the wear actual is !

It was an unnecessary swipe at our club and I have lost all respect for the guy because of it. Why not just have some humility and thank our club for the generous offer, and then say you signed with Souths because that's where your heart lies or whatever. There was no need for him to disparage the club who were keen to have him and offered him everything he wanted. It was disappointing enough for us to have missed out again, there was no need to rub our noses in it. That's just total disrespect, imo. I hope we don't even entertain the thought of ever pursuing this guy again.

Already a team with a lot of reps, yet they're able to add two top quality players in one off-season. I know Arrow isn't for this season (yet), but they can fit him in.

We haven't been able to do that in about a decade.

How? Why? NRL is really becoming more and more difficult to follow if you're not a fan of the favourites.

I think LMs choice of words weren't great when describing the WTs offer and I don't think he meant it the way we all took it. We need to understand that he probably isn't the sharpest tool in the shed and he should just stick to a very scripted press conference. The guy needs an army of imbeciles to help him make a decision and the best reason they could come up with for the delay in his decision was 'I was on holidays'. Yeah right.

He didn't take a swipe at the club. Spoke highly of Maguire and Adam Hartigan he just wanted to play at South's and Russell Crowe wanted him to and so did his family.

Moh, our time will come. We just need to keep working at it. In the meantime we need to do something other than smart governance to lift our brand. What I didn’t like about the merger was the loss of identity. We’re not supposed to discuss pre 1999 topics. You know Mitchell would have loved the idea of training under Inglis because of emotional ties with culture of the club. We need to link with a good marketing company. We changed our victory song which has Ivan’s “on the bus” slogan. Don’t know about the rest of you? But I think in many ways our culture defines our brand. The two are inextricably linked.

Opinions to NRL players from two unhappy recent ex-Wests tigers together with some South Sydney players who had been coached by Madge may have had a lot to do with West Tigers recent unfair reputation.

Not having a crack at you Newtown but what do all those saying “we can’t attract players because Madge is too tough” suggest?

The day the club replaces a coach because he was “too tough “ on players is the day the club signs up for another decade of poor performance and my last day as a supporter

Souths did just that ...
Sacked Maguire for Seibold !

They sacked him after 6 successful years which included a premiership. Form dropped, I could excuse that.

I hate to admit this but I'm related to a current Souths player and I asked him about Madge when he signed for the Tigers. He was full of praise and denied he was too hard. I can tell you the whole sorry saga surrounding his sacking, or rather the rise of Seibold if you're interested.

I’ve always been intrigued by his departure mate, please PM if you can with the story.

I'll change the names to protect the innocent....
Once upon a time, not long after a new assistant coach started work at the Storm, another assistant who had been there for a while felt he was a bit on the outer, with the new guy scoring lots of points with the boss. So the old assistant decided to apply for a vacant NRL head coaching job and promptly won a premiership. His mate from the Storm, being a first class opportunist, saw an opportunity and joined the premiership winners, only to immediately start white-anting the head coach. This is where the rumours of the old coach being a hard task master started. The new guy had new ideas and a couple of degrees and could move the club forward with a more modern approach. He charmed the players and gradually turned them against the old coach. The board were also mesmerised and decided the assistant was the future, sacking the coach who had won them a long awaited premiership. A few months into the next season, the opportunist, who by now was beginning to resemble a snake, became aware that another long serving coach at his dream club was on the outer and began concocting a scheme to slither in to replace him, despite him being contracted for another season. The idea of a swap was devised by his management team, however there was a stumbling block. The snake by now was losing the confidence of his own players and the assistant coach, let's call him DF, was by far more popular with the playing group. Rather than a swap for another coach, the players would prefer to keep DF as their head coach. This put the deal in jeopardy so the snake encouraged DF to take a head coaching job in the ESL to remove any obstacles. The players were filthy once the swap became a done deal, not because they were upset about getting a master coach but they realised they had just been used as just a rung in the ladder for the ultra ambitious snake. The news soon made it north and the result is there for all to see.

Damn...Voldemort does come across as the kind of guy who would do that. The players at Souths loved Madge. It was disappointing when he got the boot. This story makes too much sense not to be true.

I guarantee it is. If I went into the finer details it gets even worse.

I guess we all knew where LM was going. All the telltail signs were there. Especially the post try elbow to the head of AJ, which said, I’m coming for your job. We just wanted to believe we could sign a marquee subsidised by thaNRL.
I wouldn’t be too hard on Mitchell. He was probably just repeating what others have been saying to him ad nauseas.

Hi Dad clarified the situation, check out the nrl.com article - it's been quoted earlier in this thread (by me).

He said he'd regretted having taken just the first big offer and wanted to explore his options, as he had many thoughts on his next contract beyond just the money.

As others have said, he went on to note that he has high respect for Madge and the process dealing with Tigers.

It is just that some media outlets like Fox ran with "snubbed" and put their own spin on his original statement.

I have no dramas with the clarification. Anyway it's all talk, just smash Souths when you meet them next, no need for the posturing beforehand, this isn't a boxing match.

Yep, he said it all in his original press conference. That one part of the quote was taken out of context and used as a headline, generating its own false story. People needed to read/listen to the whole presser instead of reading the headline and blowing up. He might as well have said I would have regretted joining the Tigers because they suck, judging by some of the reactions.

Bobby Bonilla (ex baseball player) retired in 2001 but is still getting paid by the NY Mets over US$1m per year (and will be until he's in his 70's). Not great contract management by the Mets there.
