People do realise that there's very very little chance of any new stadium getting built nor any significant funding for existing suburban grounds, right?
Some common sense it’s all talk about these new boutique stadiums being built , there are more than enough larger stadiums in this city to accomodate all teams with modern facilities for fans and corporates The NRL is on life support as with most clubs , it’s survival of the fittest time to bunker down to one location !
I don't know that we will get 4 or 5, but I think there is a chance a couple will be built over the next 10 years. I believe this for a couple of reasons
Firstly the NSW government had a commitment with the NRL which guaranteed the grand final would be played in Sydney for the next 20+ years or so. That agreement is now null and void, so they will need to do something to retain the grand final.
Secondly the government is going to need infrastructure projects to kickstart the economy after covid is sorted, these stadiums are perfect for that as they are based in the local communities and will provide jobs.
But they won't generate any revenue. There's millions of infrastructure being built at the moment. The entire city is a construction park.
And if you think the gov can suddenly spare an extra 500 million then you're kidding yourself. Money will be invested in hospitality, tourism, healthcare, education all before some tiny suburban club gets a new stadium.
If any investment happens with the stadia it will be ANZ stadium as was originally planned. There was already uproar from the community about the frivolity of the spending pre COVID-19, now all budget strings are much much tighter
Once covid settles down there will be a push from both federal and state governments to generate jobs, construction jobs are where those jobs will be created. They may not get built, but then NSW will lose the grand final. The deputy premier has already come out in support of something happening.
Why would they lose the GF? Was the condition of the GF being in Sydney dependant on an 80k Rectangular ANZ stadium?
An alternative factor to this is congestion. It would roughly cost a similar amount if not less for the government to build a couple of green field stadium sites, than it would to convert ANZ but by spreading the infrastructure we don’t have as much reliance on the east west routes. In addition to this we talk about league in Sydney in terms of attendance not viewership. Some one could bring up figures but there’s no lack of interest of watching or supporting league in Sydney it’s just geographically it makes it a burden for supporters to attend games.
The NSW government sees a benefit in boasting the local tribalism between clubs, making it more convenient and interesting for fans to leave the pubs and the couches would be on their priority list.
I think we can all see how great a stadium like BankWest is. It’s just it’s a shame it’s in Eels territory.
Imagine a 20k ‘BankWest modelled’ South West located stadium shared by WestsTigers and Macarthur Bulls...
