Lolohea

He doesn't have to be Teddy, just be a solid fb with low mistakes and never say die attitude. If he can lift his goalkicking rate to something like Moses got to last year then he will make a brilliant contribution to the team.

I think Tui will end up being an outstanding proposition at fb,he is a real goer who will relish the position, especially knowing that he can make it his own…
Hodgo being there to help him is an added bonus, the bloke was a demon at the back when playing the game...

Cleary wasn't too bad either TT.

Only 100% physical fitness will get him to be where he wants to as a quality first grade fullback.

He needs to be the fittest guy at the club.

I really enjoyed his performances last year. However the extra baggage needs to go if he wants to make the most of his ability.

He could be well on the way to that and then I'm excited about his ability. Because he is a natural footballer.

Im not convinced he will ever lose that "extra baggage". I suspect that is just his body, having seen his old man.

Despite that "extra baggage" he still showed excellent acceleration and all round speed last year.

The question will be whether he has the endurance to go 80 mins in one of the most cardio demanding positions in the game.

Yeah it's definitely his body type. If you look at him over the years he's always had that shape even when he broke into first grade. He probably has to work a lot harder to look relatively fit than a naturally lean person needs to look relatively fit. What he does on the field will be a much better indicator of his fitness than whether or not he can make himself look like SBW.

I remember watching one of the Tonga games and seeing him putting in massive efforts in the last 10 minutes both in defence and attack. Either he's fit or he's got incredible willpower.

I don't know Russ , based on ranking him among the current fullbacks he'd be about the same spot as Lolohea

I am expecting to see some dramatic improvements across the board which will help , hopefully Tui is one being part of an untried spine

 You could say the same about George Rose and Owen Craigie

Playing half and playing fullback are two completely different fitness levels

I expect him to be fitter than last season .. yeah like some have said in here already he has a large body set .. big thighs and big (butt) rump, which many commentators have said before .. but they also said having a large rump and thighs gives you power to drive through and break tackles. Lucky for him he has that burst of speed and good foot work as well, and he can kick goals. So power, speed and good foot work is what i like in a fullback chiming into the backline. He has shown the ability to read the play well and be there to back up a team who makes the smallest of breaks, and then capitalise on that break. Give him time, and yes he doesn't have to be Teddy, all we need is a good consistent fullback, and keep the mistakes to a minimal.

Your last sentence is exactly my point.

It's a question the can only be answered on the field.

I have my doubts but I hope he proves me wrong.

Where we disagree, perhaps, is that I am not sure the "extra baggage" indicates he is not fit, or is not as fit as he can be. I have played with guys with some "pudding" who are extremely fit.

I have doubts too. Not necessarily because of his body shape but because (a) he likes to run laterally, which at the back you can't get away with, (b) he simply hasn't played a lot of footy in that position © his game is based around, to some extent tricks and this is not what I want in a fullback. I want hard, direct running with a good passing game on both sides of the body.

I'm really optimistic about Lolohea this season and think he will be awesome.
Something not mentioned about Hodgson being there to help him is that he was also a fantastic kicker.
I really think Lolohea is going to tear it up in 2018.

I think that this confirms a lot of peoples concerns around Tui. After making the break, positioning RTS well and setting up the match winning try, he was not in the first 4 or 5 players to congratulate RTS. Obviously a fitness issue there.

I'd say Tui has everything it takes to be a greaat fullback. His speed/acceleration is good enough, decent step, can obviously set up his outside men considering his time at 6 in juniors and last year.

Although I've got this uneasy feeling that he'd make a better 6 than 1\. But I think if he gets his fitness right and is relatively safe under the high ball we'll be sitting pretty.

Or it could be that they went past because he was pushed to the ground (Ferguson?) after beating a few, drawing defenders to make the space for his support and then delivering the pass. Not too bad for an unfit guy during extra time.

Well, then imagine what he can do when he is fit.

He'll be able to be the first there to congratulate each player that scores.

Doesn't matter obviously what he does during the game as long as he is one of the first there to offer congratulations.

:roll

I think what everyone needs to take into account when discussing the fitness of any player is that the coaching and conditioning staff will not have any player in first grade if he is not at the required fitness level. Tui will be fit to hit the ground running and his training will have put the miles into his legs that he needs to play fullback.
