TUQIRI: Settled at Leicester
Wednesday January 20,2010
By Neil Squires Have your say(0)
LOTE TUQIRI has signalled his desire to abort a planned return to Australian rugby league and sign a new contract with Leicester.
\
\
Wallaby wing Tuqiri’s current deal was drawn up to expire in March, so that he could head back Down Under to join Wests Tigers for the start of the NRL season. But he has settled in so well with Leicester that he is now keen to stay.

Tuqiri, 30, whose four-year-old son Samson has started school in England, said: “In the past I have only thought about my footy career but there comes a time when you have to think of family a lot more.

“They are enjoying it over here. We are from Australia and our roots are there, but we have entrenched ourselves here and it’s not too bad being away from home.

“I have a bit more anonymity and being out of the limelight has opened my eyes to a different world. I have never spent this much time with the family and I am enjoying it.”

Leicester, who signed Tuqiri in November after his sacking by the ARU for off-field excesses, believe they have tamed him and want him to remain at Welford Road.

Leicester director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “I’d like Lote to stay. Everyone raised their eyebrows when we signed him, but he has settled in well. ”

Tigers flanker Tom Croft has been ruled out for up to six weeks with the knee injury he suffered against Viadana last weekend. He will miss the Six Nations matches against Wales and Italy.

Leicester wing Johne Murphy is the only English-based player in Ireland’s 44-man squad for the defence of the Six Nations title named yesterday.

Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter will find out this afternoon whether he will have to serve a touchline ban following his verbal attack on referee David Rose.

Good Luck to Lote..I wish him well playing Rugby..at least all the talk about him joining the Tigers and returning to the NRL generated a fair bit of publicity for the Tigers….Personally, I think the Tigers are better off without Lote, he would command loads of $$$$ which could be spent elsewhere in positions we are weak. Lote plays Wing or Fullback and to be honest, I don't think the Tigers are weak in these positions....so if we are going to sign a Marquee player and spend loads of $$$, we should sign one that will fill a position we are weak in to really bolster the overall team strength......If I were Humphreys I would state publically we are no longer interested in signing Lote...and wish him all the best in Rugby...just like we did with Willie!

why? cause a paper said so?

its all hot air…...enough to fill a hot air ballon and travel around the world

There are direct quotes from Tuqiri. Can't be all hot air.

I'm sick of the guy. I really don't want him here any more. We have so much depth in the wingers anyway. Spend the money on upgrading contracts to free up the cap so we can sign a more dedicated marque player next year.

Leicester don't even have room in their cap to keep lote for the whole season, let alone next year too!

How do you know its hot air Trexx?

IMO best news I have heard all day!

Have a look at what Tuqiri actually says:

“In the past I have only thought about my footy career but there comes a time when you have to think of family a lot more.
>

That does not translate to: "I want to abort my plan to go back to Rugby League" it translates to "I'm enjoying it more than I expected. It's nice to be able to spend time with my family" which he was likely unable to do previously due to all the travel involved with the Wallabies.

Let's just see how it transpires hey?

What I cant understand is how some people on here were almost 100% sure that he was coming here to me that says one of three things :

(A) People were spruiking half truths very early on to become mr popularity on the forum ( possible but I would like to think not the case..)

(B) People on the Tigers payroll were doing the same thing ( more possible..)

(C) Lote has no idea what he wants in life and so his word cant be trusted ( definitely leaning towards this one, in fact always was.)

Whatever the reason I genuinely believe we are better off.

CRAIG WING won’t be feeling so lonely from next month when he is joined by Australian superstar Lote Tuiqiri.
\
\
The former Wallaby winger has agreed to a one year deal with NTT Com, a Tokyo based side owned by Japanese communication giant NTT. The deal is set to rock both Leicester Tigers and NRL side Wests Tigers who were both battling for his signature.
>
“I told both clubs that I’d look at what they had to offer, but a NTT contacted me last week and said they were serious about getting me onboard.”
>
The deal will be announced tomorrow morning Japan time and Tuqiri will cut his UK stint short to begin training with former State of Origin rival Craig Wing in the first week of Feburary. NTT’s first game is against Shishi Sarakastik at Tokyo National Stadium on 1 April.
>
Meanwhile, Wests Tigers manager Stephen Humphries confirmed that the club would shift its focus to snaring rejected forward Willie Mason on a 3 year deal.

Ok so a journalist over in the UK has written an article in the local rag, much like our journalists over here do and we all know how much credability journalists have, as long as there article is in on time who cares what spin they put on it…just consider for a moment that the conversation went like this...

Journalist: So Lote you have had some problems in the past in your career, how are things going for you now that you aren't playing for Australia and on the road for extended periods??
Lote: “In the past I have only thought about my footy career but there comes a time when you have to think of family a lot more.

Journalist: So your family is enjoying having you around more and spending some time in another country??
Lote: “They are enjoying it over here. We are from Australia and our roots are there, but we have entrenched ourselves here and it’s not too bad being away from home.

Journalist: So your finding that you have some more privacy over here away from the Australian media??
Lote: “I have a bit more anonymity and being out of the limelight has opened my eyes to a different world. I have never spent this much time with the family and I am enjoying it.”

I'm not saying that Lote is thinking of staying over there or will definitely coming back, athough from my limited knowledge of his set up there I don't believe they can take on any other international players, but as we all know the media can spin somebody's comments in anyway that they like based on their own questions, I would just suggest that whatever spin we hear out of the media is purely that and we just wait and see what transpires...

Sounds like we will now within the next 24 hours whether this is fact or not.
