Madge’s Ability to Attract Stars

It stinks, let’s be honest. For a premiership winning coach, his reputation isn’t a very good one. His recruitment has been only marginally better than Cleary’s. And I say marginally because he signed LL and AD who were solid signings in 2020. He can’t attract stars though, see JAC and LM. And he stinks at retention. He’s letting go McIntyre and ET, as well as maybe Aloiai. And his big re-signing is Seyfarth.

Unfortunately, if we want to recruit stars in theor prime, we need the coach first. We need a Bennett, Bellamy or Robinson. The stars would flock. Sadly for us, as much as we’ve tried to fool ourselves, Madge is not in the same class. He’s a poor man’s version.

Is it Madge’s ability to attract stars? Or the clubs ability to attract stars. We’ve never signed a current origin player or Australian player ever in our history.

I agree that a Bennett or Bellamy would have the power to attract talent but that’s it, no other coach will be able to sign stars to our club

We just need to start making finals, show the players coming here isn’t a one way ticket to ending your career but it’s a way to make a great career. Soon as we have stability in our club and we can start being competitive, the players will come. Until then we will have to make do with Doueihi and Luciano type signings

Brett Hodgson played Origin both before and after joining our club and Scott Prince made origin the year he joined us but they are the only ones close.

hodgeson was languising in reserve grand and prince had a broken leg in 2003 the year before we signed them.

And that was a long time ago now ? fact is we’ve never really signed stars unless they’re under the radar signings like Ellis. We have to do what Canberra did and look elsewhere like England

It's something in the club that turns players away. Identity perhaps? I was hoping Madge would be an attraction but that doesn't seem to be working.

Agreed, but they are the closest we have come to signing current origin players, Hodgo player all 3 games in 2002.

I was actually pointing that out to agree with your point, they weren't even current SOO players when we signed them.

Identity is part of it, but it is also 10 years of failure and the treatment of high profile players.

Never making finals, new coaches every 18 months, countless stories of players treated badly, bad facilities, begrudged players in the media talking bad about us etc. players take notice of this stuff

The COE will help (despite the running joke) holding onto a coach for a while will help and the biggest one is making finals. Why would anyone want to join a club that doesn’t make finals besides using us as a stepping stone

Madge isn’t a versatile coach, he can’t change his style. Accordingly to be successful he needs his own squad that can conform to his style. Unfortunately, doesn’t seem like many players want to play for him.

I know haha sorry came out wrong I was agreeing with you also

Madge is from the Storm school they don’t sign stars they unearth players and turn them onto stars. The difference is the club Melbourne would spend 3x what we do in strength and conditioning , recovery and off field benefits.

It’s always a club very rarely a coach issue. Coaches impact is very overrated with the exception of Bellamy, Bennett and few others.

One thing I will say about Madge is he isn't able to adapt to get the best out of his squad, he needs the squad to adapt to get the best out of him.

What coach has ever attracted "stars" to this club. We have never attracted stars (until they are washed up). Any we have managed to have on our roster we developed. The big difference is we use to be able to retain them. I have my view on why that happened but it is evident to me it's a bigger problem than trying to lay blame at individuals whether that be Pascoe/Maguire. What we need is people who are prepared to do the hard yards to change the perception of our club and there is no way a Bellamy or Bennett are going to take that on.

He flogs the team as he has to. We have a lack of talent. Madge is a winner he leaves no stone unturned. If everyone at the club was as pig headed about winning we wouldn’t have the issues we have now.

Harden up or take off. The next coach to take over from Madge in 2023 will be successful Madge is doing the hard yards no one else would.
I can see Madge being a Johnny Lang he won’t get the rewards for his efforts.

I don't see any problems with madge getting people in the door. I think it's the admin in being able to close out the deal. Something is happening where players start out excited, then lose interest. That's not madge.

I've noticed where we've lost, it's always been other clubs swooping in late. Maybe we're going too hard, too early. Looking too eager.

I know he's not the most popular signing on here, but I think BJ was a good signing.

I agree with others that we should look to England like Canberra, and I was glad to hear the POM mention there's someone over there we're looking at.
