Tim Sheens returning got me thinking of something.

A month or so ago when people were calling for Madge's head, and others were saying we need additional coaching staff, there was a myth doing the rounds to the effect of 'Madge doesn't want good or high profile assistants because he is paranoid about getting replaced by them'.

This is obviously rubbish, because he'd previously tried to bring Laurie Daley to the club.

Laurie isn’t a good coach.

If I had to choose between John Morris and Laurie Daley as our coach I would choose the latter.

He failed as nsw coach and hasn’t landed an NRL gig. Tells you something.

How many clubs has he applied for a coaching position with?

I’m not sure. I remember he went for a role overseas a couple of years back.

It seems to me that @Telltails argument is a fair bit stronger than yours Avo, as to whether Laurie Daley is a good coach or not.
Or maybe closer to the point is... your statement is pretty weak.

He’s never been an NRL coach. Apart from a few games for country NSW his only coaching appointment has been for NSW where he was fired. Do you have reason to believe he’s a good coach?

I have no idea if he is a good coach or not, but Madge wanted him, so that to me suggests he would have done a good job in the field Madge wanted him for.
You seem to be very strong with your negative view of Daley, but imo you dont have strong evidence to support your view.

His results in Origin shows me enough.

Reminds me of Brett Kenny. Great players but not much happening between the ears, and couldn't coach under 6s to a wooden spoon.

Fittler is similar

Bellamy only had a 22% winning rate in SOO worse than Daley's and at least he won a series against arguably the best SOO team of all time. Daley may or may not be a decent coach at club level. Plenty of great coaches have been less than successful as NSW SOO coaches.

I’m talking head coach, and I think the evidence is pretty clear. As an assistant I have no idea, might be a good halves coach.

Who knows who’s good at coaching though avo . Sometimes the dumbest dude in the room is the only one who can manages to get the message through . And the smartest , most switched on guy , can’t ever relay his message clearly , so it might as well be in faasi .
The thing that makes me agree with you though , is I can’t ever remember someone saying how astute of a RL mind Daley is . And most of the legends of the game who’ve gone on to true success , all had that “I can’t believe how switched this guy is” conversations about him.
The johns boys ,Cronk and Cameron Smith even our own Robbie , I’ve seen plenty of people have those types of convos about them . And usually people in the know .
Maybe I’m just too young , but I always remember the convos out of the Raiders being related to Stuart not Daley . Daley was the naturally talented / Kenny type . Not exactly a student of the game .
But like I said earlier , who knows who’s good or not . One thing I do know though , is many coaches are blokes who spent a lot of time on the bench , either through injury or not being good enough. I think that goes way further , having to be a student just to get a run on the field .

I agree, the best coaches were rarely the best players. I remember listening to a podcast (maybe matty John’s) where they were saying the players that weren’t as talented (Bellamy, Robinson etc) had to give it everything they had mentally and physically. Essentially when you couldn’t rely on raw talent you had to put so much extra time understanding the game.

Cronk is case in point of this. He spent the first 2 years riding the pine , and perfecting and learning . Even he would tell you he wasn’t the most skill full. It’s why I’m NFL they’d have young players with the most raw talent “red shirt “ for a year .

I remember being told (20 odd yrs ago) that Daley would rock up to training with a pad and note down all drills when playing for Australia. You can only assume he would of done the same at club level. That doesn’t really aid anyone’s argument though

Lets just hope Lozza is a better coach than commentator ...or even hope his coaching ability is as big as his snoz is

Most people on the forum could see before this game that Walters wasn't up to first-grade standard... why can’t the coach?

He does it all the time too? Ofahengaue in the second-row etc.

Please sack him now.

Get real, Madge owns this loss, all those pumping his tyres last week were clutching at straws, Penrith had 8 of their top players out, seriously, we should have won.
Madge's team selections are at best hopeful, he owns this loss, 7 in a row to Parra since he arrived, and most are floggings.
JTJ is not a winger, Doueihi should have been five eight, Madge makes these ridiculous calls quite regularly, he doesn't learn from his mistakes, which is coaching 101

I will give credit where due. We appear to be getting tougher and the injuries really knocked around our organisation around.

But selections and bench rotations were again ordinary.

It’s obvious to me that we just don’t have the required speed in our backline , therefore our players should be standing deeper and not crowding to give us some hope of getting someone like the jet into space , it seemed our forwards were outmuy, but a lot of that was down to the ref who wanted to give 6 again to them every set

Blore got 5 mins in the 1st half ..
what’s the point ?
Lucy should be an impact player off the bench imo

The Walters selection was mind boggling.
He should've been dropped to Ron Massey Cup and yet he somehow found his way into the NRL team.

Yeah, I am sick to death of hearing this, his record the last 6 seasons at NRL level is embarrassing for a so called gun coach, he is stuck in NRL 2014 mode
