Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Time will tell whether the line drawn in the sand was the right one. I'm glad a decision has at least been made, but I'm very dubious whether the changes the WT will implement across its football department will result in improved performances.

I still don't think Madge is the right guy to get the most of this squad - unless there is some miraculous (and I mean that in every sense of the word) change in attitude next season, we're bringing home the spoon. New assistant coaches may provide some benefit, but I think the board, and the entire structure of the board needs to change.

The bigger issues of recruitment rest with Madge and Hartigan, and I'm far from convinced we're going to improve in this regard. I still don't think we've hit rock bottom yet, and that worries me.

Disappointed and disillusioned. It appears that we do not have clear thinking at any level of the club. The Board should never have extended Maguire’s contract for two years given his record at the time. The Board dug a hole for itself when it extended him. Now understandably the Board does not want to pay out the reported $700k to cancel his contract with no other coach signed and to admit its huge error in having extended his contract.
I presume we will get the spoon next year, or close to it. I have no faith in Maguire, or this Board to turn things around.
Hopefully someone will take hold of this club and steer it in the right direction. I think that might be years away though given the mediocrity we currently have at all levels at the club.
I say go the Tigers but it is getting harder.

Cheer up. We have two premiership winning coaches in the football Department and have nearly got the worst big 4 in history off our books for good finally! A couple of recruitment wins and re-sign some promising youngsters and we will challenge for 8th.

Our next big 4 are all off contract at the same time. If none of them are re signed early, we’re in for the exact same situation as before.

If we don’t re-sign Stef heads must roll

lol why would he stay. Imagine he goes back to origin camp this year, every single person there will say what are you doing to yourself and he’ll be sold recruitment by every person there. Seriously our best chance is to just offer him stupid money on a 2 year extension

An upgrade and signing some better players to replace Packer and mbye would be important. Swapping Garner for Sims would be my first order of business.

I’ve just read the SMH report and what struck me as weird was the concern from the board that there needed to be greater connection between the club and the football department.

From the chairs and CEO’s previous communication, it seems the separation between the football department and club was intentional given Pascoe and the board has no football intelligence. I remember at the start of this review the chair laying the blame on the football department and going to painstaking lengths to praise the financial performance of the front office. It’s hypocritical bs that the board have laid the blame at Madge’s feet for the org structure and delineation of duties and responsibilities and that’s coming from someone who wanted Madge gone.

This is just one example of mixed messaging and diabolical communication from the club. I remember when Taylor got sacked, the club refused to acknowledge he was the wrong choice (clearly he was), the Pangai Jnr situation was embarrassing and unprofessional and yesterday’s cancelled board meeting was just a train wreck from start to finish. Communication may seem like a minor detail but poor communication creates uncertainty and an unstable working environment. It makes us seem outwardly unprofessional and chaotic, and degrades our integrity. Also it points to deeper issues of a lack of strategic direction both on and off the field.

Sorry for the long-winded rant guys I’ve just never been more disappointed and ashamed of the club.

It has been written by Michael Chammas, the same guy who has been running an agenda against Madge for months and lying for a week.

On the recruitment front it might be time to relax the moneyball approach until we can get a core of quality players. For WT, moneyball is death. If you're Roosters or Storm it works fine.

My wife and I each have a premium membership and will keep them. We support the Wests Tigers and would never put any coach, player or other individual above the club (even Robbie!). We have stuck solid through thick and thin and believe that's what members and fans do.

I'm not looking for any pats on the back for this but we will always support whoever the club appoints. so the outcome of the review has had no impact on our support. I'm glad to see Madge continue with the passion and belief that he wears on his sleeve.

Here's to better times ahead!

Enjoy your wooden spoon next season to eat your soup with, because that’s where we are heading!

He didn't deserve that response.

Obviously not directed especially at him but the general Madge lovers with their massive blinkers on! Can’t stand the ignorance of some people!

Do they really even watch the games, as I said previously I have supported the club through numerous wooden spoons and this is the worst we have looked by a mile!

38-0 to the wooden spooners!

So you would be ok replacing Madge with Jason Taylor? Anyone but Madge?

I’d let Gladys Berejiklian coach, she couldn’t do any worse than Madge has done for us, !

Good I know to disregard your opinion then.

It’s an interesting place we now arrive at as a club.

Intended or not, Madge will now be under the microscope by the trigger happy media next year.

We have had significant moments as a club before and on just about every occasion we have been found wanting irrespective of whom the current custodians (Management, Coaching & Players) have been.

This time the club must now find some actual leadership and get ruthless in pursuit of success.

It’s clear this off season is pivotal.

As a fan I want to see an actual plan and clear accountability and purpose moving forward around the proposed structural and procedural changes.

There must also be tangible action and execution of said plan that translates to onfield performance, not just more words and rhetoric.

Show me you can produce WT, as a long suffering fan I want to believe but I need to see it.

I still think the wrong decision was made. I have no idea if Wayne Bennett is interested or even available, but I really hope he was considered to take over. I don't think Madge is the right person for the job that we have here, but this whole review thing was good for the club. They should all have been put on notice before anyway, but this puts a bigger spotlight on them.

I'm glad a decision was made before pre-season. My second issue with this is Madge has $1.5m or so to spend in the cap. Now that he knows his job is safe for a year only, I hope there isn't any panic buying to save his job or for short term results. Even though I don't think he's the right person, I believe in what he's trying to do ( I just don't think he can execute it). Also, we are not going to make top 8 again in 2022.. they now have to persist with Madge (as 2022/23 will be Madges squad)

I really hope they don't go away from their overall ideas and don't start panic buying to save their jobs. Keep aiming for long term results.

With Sheens onboard and In a more hands on role, no more excuses For Madge. If no improvement next year, especially after the first couple of rounds, he is sacked. He has no more excuses.

You may as well sack him now then because there won’t be any. If he’s been given the “make the 8 or bust” ultimatum then the club is kidding itself, no way they believe we can make the 8.

Sorry for the long-winded rant guys I’ve just never been more disappointed and ashamed of the club.

Why was the cancelled board meeting embarrassing?

I find it embarrassing because it was a knee-jerk reaction to media reports and another back-flip by the club. It makes the board look spineless and indecisive because they can’t make a decision and allow that decision to be scrutinised. No matter what field you’re in any decision will likely be criticised but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be decisive. It just means that you should have the rationale and evidence to augment any decisions/stance. This seems lost on the board.

Madge presented to the Football committee yesterday and the board decided to think on it over night, it doesn't mean there was a backflip.

I felt the board lost their nerve after criticism from the media. I get the board needed to consider Madge’s response but I can’t see how Madge’s response would have differed that greatly to the commentary/feedback he gave during the review process.

Based on?

Doesnt Occams Razor and the known facts all point towards the board/club actually doing things properly?

38-0 to the wooden spooners!

We were minus 10 Ist graders for one reason or another. This fact has been conveniently omitted by those with an agendas. I like you was of the opinion the players were not responding to Madge but as previously stated, that might be improved by a couple of decent assistants. There is one thing I will give Madge is that he definitely tries to give it his all. Unfortunately that might not be good enough, however I sincerely hope it is.

10 first graders????? tell that to Trent Robinson! Joke club, Joke team, Joke coach!

You swap Nofa with Tedesco and Joffa with Hargreaves and Lucy with Critchton and tell me we get the same result.

In case you have forgotten Maguire brought Lucy and Joffa to the club and re- signed Nofa

Yeah decision made, some agree, some don't, no changing it now. Hopefully the club lines up fully behind him now to get the job done.

You made your points and well made , good to see you move along now with the club

I want the club to succeed, bitching and moaning now isn't going to change anything. Time to get the club moving.

You would think getting the spoon would be rock bottom but If that’s what It takes then we are in massive trouble as that reality already should’ve hit them in the face
