I honestly think the club can challenge for the 8, but not with Maguire in charge. He has proven time and again
* that he coaches the team he wants not the team he has;
* is unable to draw effort out of the players;
* his game plans are rigid and set for 2014 style of play not 2022;
* he doesn't hold players accountable for sub standard performances; ( e.g.Nofo lets in 2.3 tries for every one he scores)
* for the forwards he recruits the same player focusing on size, strength and not stamina or line speed (Stefano not included)

Sheenius isn't the answer (those of us that are old enough know why), Gardiner is to inexperienced, they need to look at Morris, Cartwright, Furner, Ciraldo, Henry or Parrish. If the management of the club haven't started looking for Madges replacement, then they are part of the problem.

They have a side that may challenge the eight because of Madge.
Firstly he took over a side that was full of old, hasbeen players on long contracts. That was not Madge's fault. Madge did what he had to do , clean out the dead wood , which he did. The pathways was a complete mess prior to Madge, look at Pathways now, our lower grades are the best they have been prior to JT turning up at the club. Last year he got together a team that was basically, the most young, inexperienced team in the competition, have hardly played a game together, . Of course they look like a team with no cohesion, that was expected, however a lot of our young players improved, look at Laurie, Stefano, Blore, Douehie, Talau, Luciano (all have improved under Madge), these players were not even first graders or at least regular first graders, before they came here, then you have Liddle, coming back from a horrific injury, he will be even better this year.
You wankers that get on board the Tele and Fox express, and believe in the dribble and constant crap. They try to derail the Wests Tigers constantly, and some of you people get blinded by it. Honestly your not supporters your just baggers.

Good post, expectations need to be realistic.

We have, Newcastle made the 8 we beat them twice and we beat the Premiers. So after last year you would expect some improvement, expectations are realistic.

We should reflect on Sheens' comment in his interview with Phil Rothfield.

Madge has got to improve us. Simple as that.

Paws, we could also reflect on Sheens’ complete answer to Buzz’s question..

"Of course we need to do better but for me it’s not just about making the eight. Not unless when you make the eight you’re a chance of winning the comp. You run eighth and then go out the back door week one," Sheens said.

"Everyone is under pressure. It’s a results-driven business and there are a lot of NRL coaches under pressure. The expectations of every club is to be successful. (North Queensland’s) Todd (Payten) and (Canterbury’s) Trent (Barrett) are under pressure. You actually embrace it but don’t coach or act that way. You can’t panic. Madge has got to improve us. Simple as that."

Sure, it’s imperative we improve, but what are we measuring? How can we know when we have sustainable improvement? Can it be measured in half a season?

Was it Sheens elsewhere who said words similar to a coach usually gets 3 years? This is Maguire's fourth.

He was quoting Jack Gibson, Gibson never coached WT.

Great point but I look at it differently. He wants them to play the way that is sustainable, the way that wins and the way that everyone wants this club to play. If the players can't put in the effort, they can be moved on. And now with a proper coaching pathway as well, junior coaches can nurture the juniors in that way too.

On the other hand, great coaches like Bennett and Hasler are able to get the best out of the team in front of them, whereas Madge definitely hasn't.

I doubt any of the great coaches would have faired better with this roster or our facilities.

The players lacked premium talent and the right attitude.

Our squad was made of youngsters, prospects or paycheck players

Think about how many of our team would make the squad at the roosters, Penrith or storm??

Maybe 2....

Maguire largely assembled that roster

Yes he did, He had 15 years of baggage, Salary cap issue and no one wanting to come here.

Well said

From all reports he has been one of the reasons that players have been reluctant to come here over the last 3 years

Who do we blame for the other 18 years?

Madge, Brooks, Liddle....
Take your pick.

I think some people forget that we have only made the final 8, 3 times.?
The club has developed a losing culture and one of the behaviours of losers is to look for a scapegoat to hang. But hey, let’s just keep doing it? Why? Best described in the story about the frog and the scorpion.

Baggers can’t be choosers.

For the first time ever I have some inside info. One of my friends works in a small role at the Tigers and he said he gets along great with Madge.

My mate is a hard bastard though.

A small role at the club?

So your mate is one of the players?

James Tamou?

Nofo?

It’s quite clear from the description that the mate is not a player.
Madge’s job is not to be liked, so I wouldn’t go spreading rumours. Lol

I saw the 1st part of your post as having a serious tone

Sometimes but not always to gauge on a forum someone's tone

All good mate and thanks for clarifying
