Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

We simply lack spark in attack, as well as confidence. Deffinately looking at Duffy , or others to add some zip to the side

The ultimate test is...where would Saints be with Mary?

They'd be where we are...

They made the change and brought in an actual coach / a tactician and it has worked.

We need a change, desperately. A real coach (teach how to play / tactics)...not just a motivator (the speeches only work first 12 months / no longer work)

We need a change.

I dont understand how a tactician will help a mob who cannot grasp the fundamentals... No coach can get us out of this quagmire, its a lack of personal resilience at the player level, its a weakness in some of these players resolve as human beings.

^^^^^^This.

x 2. They lack the basics. Communication in defence, backing up in defence, running in support, showing composure when the game is on the line. No point in talking tactics if they can't do the basics.

We've put up with it for 10 seasons. Sacking the coach has clearly not improved things.

I posted on the Forum the day Maguire had signed with WTs as a colleague still had close links to Souths and told me. What I didn't post was his reply when I asked him about what he would be like which I remember well - not the coach for WTs' style of football.

What is our style of football?

It's been a pretty consistent style for the last decade: defend poorly and offer nothing inside the 20.

He was correct.

What is the WT's style of football?

Not tackling? 5th tackle bombs with no pressure?

21 years and 3 times we finished in the top half of the comp. Need a new style.

The club has not asked why could we not keep quality? How many quality Penrith juniors leave the club?

Daine Laurie
Matt Burton
Kaide Ellis
Wayde Egan
Waqa Blake
RCG
Tyrone Peachey
Blake Austin
Luke Lewis
Wade Graham
Frank Pritchard
Paul Whatuira

Penrith leak lots of juniors, they have a very large catchment.

Also Marty Taupau isn't a Tigers junior, nor is JAC. Fifita technically also isn't a Tigers junior as he was picked up to join NYC from Griffith.

Penrith are leading the comp and undefeated, big difference, we are unco and defeated

That's not the point, the point is the OP said Penrith don't lose juniors. They do, of course, but their nursery is big and they've eventually managed to overcome those losses.

That being said however, Lewis and Graham were in the backbone of the Sharks 2016 premiership, when Panthers were knocked out.

You have to keep the right juniors ......Tedesco ,Fifita ,Brown ,Woods and our club is in a far better place

The only juniors we kept Brooks ,Nofa .....

It even seems that junior players are avoiding our pathways ....the junior base is as weak as I've ever seen it

Bulldogs last year were putting in but were outclassed.
We are not even close to putting that level of effort in as soon as anything becomes challenging.

Madge doesn't have the dressing room, maybe it's not right or fair but we cant sack 30 players.

What signs are there now after 3 years (9th,11th, Spoon target this year) that things are getting better and we are just about to come good?

Let's not forget Madge originally got the job as he believed the current team we had was a top8 roster, he has had 2 years to tinker and now its not a top8 roster?

Please sack him, sack pascoe. Start fresh and maybe next year we will find some form.

Madge has done plenty of good off the field but hasn't translated into results. Got rid of a lot of the deadwood, freed up a lot of salary cap, signed quite a few promising rookies.

Bugger has had the same issues as every other coach we've had the last decade, can't get the players to give a crap when they're on the field

I don’t know whether it’s because he’s the NZ coach but we do have way ***too many Polynesian in our squad... always have IMO. Lacking in strategy and smarts*** in both D & A. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again....
How many premierships have the NZ warriors won??
Kind of didn’t help when we signed a former warriors coach either just quietly.

That is a pretty flat out racist thing to say frankly.

It’s just the quota that I’m banging on about. I’m no racist thank you

I don't think we have a quota for Polynesian players.

That is my concern ....the white flag goes up way too quickly

Dogs fight it out at least

IF we replace Madge whoever we sign must be able to bring talent to the club ...and hopefully an excellent assistant coach

I bet the fans of other clubs like our style. They probably hate Melbourne, Roosters and Penrith's styles.

@Telltails and @Mighty-Mouse you're not wrong.

I thought Madge's coaching style was tough, old-school, defensive oriented (a'la Bennett). This is a style which , while not flashy, wins rugby league games. But our team leaks so many points so I'm at a loss. Either the game has changed or Madge can't get them tackling.
Either way, he has not adapted.

Then again, Madge might have his own style he wants to impress on the team. But I see nothing of any style or substance from the players. Are they ignoring him? or does he have no influence? I have no idea.

I think his time is limited, which is a shame, because you are 100% right we don't have the personnel. I doubt whether Jack Gibson could've done much better with these players. Gibson was a premiership winning coach when he went to Souths in late 70's and couldn't get them to finals. Bennett could not turn Newcastle around. Neither of those teams did anything afterwards and each time the coach went on to be successful at other clubs.
Make of that what you will....

Madge isn't anywhere near Gibson or Bennett, but he is perceived as one of the classier coaches going around. He has been responsible for much of this roster and must therefore assume some responsibility for this series of aberrations.
Regardless of our players lack of skill, Madge is employed to inspire confidence and is supposed to instill a level of enthusiasm, composure, self-belief all while igniting passion, fight and creativity. He is supposed to make players as accountable as he is.

I like Madge, but there is no style, no substance. No coach can withstand such terrible performances. Jack and Wayne would struggle with this roster but that's professional sport. It's a tough one.

I noticed that Madge got asked something in the post game press conference like “who is to blame or something like what do you need to look at”

With him replying starts with the players .. **paused and also said staffing aswell..**

So obviously some of the staff aren’t doing something right, which I honestly could point my finger at Lee hagipantelis or Pascoe..

Reason I say this is that they always come out of no where and talk crap and I believe they’d be the ones saying something behind the doors like “you can drop bla bla bla and bring in bla bla bla”

My thoughts

Yes I noticed that as well

To be fair I think he was more saying that the players and the coaching staff are responsible for finding the solution. He wasn't saying that the coaching staff are on notice.

I just want to put this in here and hopefully some of you can reflect on it.

Sacking the coach is not the answer, we are back to square one of rebuilding if we do it. You all want a quick fix and I know I will get shot down by saying this - "patience is the key" I can see some young ones that will be a star of the future - hopefully he can let them play after Round 10. I am in the same boat as you guys - I want to win too so please don't get me wrong. If only it was that easy.

Bennett is in his 70s and has adapted his coaching to the modern game. Bennett is also a man manager. Maguire is stuck in the past and from what we saw yesterday the players will not play for him. It's over, let's hope the Board act now.

Rightly or wrongly it seems from the outside looking in Madge has lost the playing group, they arent playing for him are they tanking i guess thats debateable or are they just not good enough. I think our roster this year is stronger than last year but we seem to be going backwards fast.
Theres also rumblings on here from some that may know or hear a thing or two that things are rumbling behind the scenes, i would say given our current form thats an obvious assumption.
I dont see Madge seeing out the year, the famous articles coming out saying Madge has the backing of the board is ominous i guess.
Personally i think there has to be marked improvement and quickly for Madge to continue here he seems a man devoid of answers. Who else is out there that could get our roster playing Flannagan Morris?
