Madge Maguire - Mega Thread

Sydney morning herald, Michael Chammas:

Wests Tigers officials will hold a series of crisis meetings over the next 48 hours that could see Michael Maguire sacked as coach of the embattled club.

Fed-up Tigers officials have ordered an internal review after the club’s finals hopes were all but buried in Sunday’s humiliating ANZAC Day demolition at the hands of Manly at Bankwest Stadium.

The club is now trying to determine whether Maguire will continue as coach or if they would be better parachuting the likes of John Morris or Shane Flanagan into the hot seat after their sixth loss from seven games to open the season.

It appears the only thing now saving Maguire from the axe is the embarrassment some club powerbrokers want to avoid by parting ways with their fifth coach in nine years.

There’s a feeling inside the club that the Tigers have a better and more balanced roster than they did in 2020, yet they are going backwards at a rate of knots. One of the questions set to be asked in the coming days is why perceived improvements in the roster aren’t being met with improvements in performance.

The Herald can reveal Maguire has a clause in his recently inked two-year extension that will allow the club to part ways with him without much of a financial impact on the club. It’s understood there is a cap on a potential pay-out should the Tigers terminate Maguire’s deal.

The Tigers assume a familiar position behind their own posts during Sunday’s loss to Manly.

Sunday’s loss saw this current crop of Tigers become the worst defensive team in the club’s history through seven rounds, not to mention the worst in the NRL for points conceded this year.

The Tigers have gone from ninth in Maguire’s first year in charge to 11th last year. They are now equal last with Brisbane and the Bulldogs after seven rounds.

Our roster is bad but I can see Madge starting to lose his mind. I think he needs help and would bring in the Sheenius as a coaching director. We need players and time with pathways providing talent.

We are a bottom 4 roster but the lack of effort is troubling. We just fold like a deck chair.
I can handle losing but we must fight.

I personally think our roster isn't that bad...Maguire has just lost them

Our roster is worse than any team except the bulldogs. Some promising players but it’s 15/16 teams. Our roster is the problem it’s a bottom 4 team all day. Wayne Bennett or Trent Robinson may get us to 12th.

I don’t think our roster is that bad. Cleary did much better with less.

much less ??? didnt he have a intire cap to work with ?????
and most those players form didnt drop straight away mbye and packer werent always bad for us

Maybe so, but on paper that team wasn’t as good as this one. Cleary is a much much much better coach

He also killed our club with terrible recruitment decisions.

Nofo for additional 4 years and Musgrove 4 years isn’t good recruitment either.

If the issue is the battle between Wests and Balmain then move to Perth and break the link

If they move to Perth that'd be an entirely different club wouldn't it?

I can't see Wests Ashfield funding that.

Yes, relocation isn't a option.

You could host the ambush at your mansion in Perth !

You can use the maids dunny....

Is she hot ?

She stands when she's taking a leak. Your decision

Hot ....!

Really there is something seriously wrong at the club ... we cannot keep players who have come up through ranks and we cannot keep quality players brought in ...

Look at some of the juniors playing at other clubs:
(Off the top of my head and probably many others)

James Tedesco
Mitchell Moses
Ryan Papanhuyzen
Josh Addo-Carr
Aaron Woods
Andrew Fifita
Curtis SIronen
Marty Taupau

The club has not asked why could we not keep quality? How many quality Penrith juniors leave the club?

The other question is why can't we keep players who come to the club? How long before Laurie leaves?

And finally we must have an answer as to why quality players do not want to join the club. Clearly there must be whispers amongst the players at other clubs. We are clearly toxic.

Gus must be appointed to review the club from the lowly junior ranks up the board and also the arrangement with Wests and Balmain.

I hate going through this each year .... hate it.

Not great recruitment but not diabolical ala Cleary.

At least they won't be spending millions if Madge's goes

I think the biggest issue sacking him might cause is losing some decent youngsters. End of the day quite a few of these boys came over because they liked Madge.

Mate, all those players are poor humans. We dodged a bullet with every one of them. 🤣

It's not the problem although a lot of those players would help. Teams turnover talent all the time. We've turned over talent. You have to when there is a salary cap.

The issue is we aren't winning. We need some better players but I don't think we have that bad a squad. I think our squad this year is improved on the last couple of years.

Yep no problem from me either.

I reckon he should be the assistant coach now. We need a plan in place to replace Madge.

Appointing Gus will make no difference, unless the Board will implement any recommendations made. I would not be at all confident that would happen.

Let the Badge take over as interim, probably understands the modern game better then most.

?

Neil Henry a decent option. Thought he went alright at titans, brought them from 14th to 8th at least.
