I'd take Potter's and JT's roster over this current roster everyday of the week. Woods Tapau Teddy Austin Simona Moses JAC Sirro Farah - nucleus of really good side. Cleary and Maguire better coaches with a poorer squad.

Austin, Simona, Moses, Sirro, Farah. No. Austin performed well enough during his stint, but the others only had their moments imo.

But all could play - then it is up to the coach.

Given our current roster and cap restraints I can’t blame the coach for these results and when you compare him to the likes of Stuart and Arthur that took time to get the squads they have now we should not be getting impatient ....... yes I know we have been saying this the Potter era but then we have never stuck with a coach in recent years to make their teams work

Few things for me

- roster, what other coaches had was far more potent and talented than what Madge has
- age of the roster for key player positions is also alot older for Madge
- ability to bring in big names, Cleary was the only one given cap space the others needed to spend years to clear it. Madge still needs 2yrs to clear his.
- pandemic no one else had to deal with the bubble with a team not of their choosing.
- the others also had some great junior talents to bring through

Lets be very serious for a minute only maybe 2-3 players max would make the starting 17 at the top 8 sides today. That says it all about our current side. I actually feel for Madge. Cleary left him in one hell of a hole and compared to the others he had no great talented young kids he could blood either

Cleary stuffed us up in a massive way, I have no doubts it was very intentional - he is a very very smart guy.

Good summary. Madge => Cleary => Potter => Jt

Yeah, I get your point.

Another post trying to excuse Jason Taylor and make him look better lol.

How’s the forward pack going. Didn’t you rate it the best in the comp at the start of the season? ?

Never said "the" best in the comp. But it's a great young pack capable of holding their own.

Your point JT

As you so often like to say. Play the ball, not the man.

This whole thread was started to trigger Maguire supporters who have been a bit over the top in their support of him.

Let's be real.

As I said above Mighty Tiger summarizes well but for me it can also be summed up like this.

For how many years were we bleating wanting our coach to.....

1. Instill toughness
2. Give juniors a go
3. Drop underperforming players regardless of pay rate
4 pick on form?

Madge is the first to do all of these things. He is the coach we have been asking for

Exactly, we say the same things every year but it’s because we’ve not stuck with a coach for an extended period of time in forever. It’s hurt us really badly

Fans are always reactive after a bad loss. There will be the I told you so's and the yeah buts. All coaches have to wear it including it Maguire. Part of the job and they know it better than any one.

That’s why I don’t think he’d be hiding behind the fact there’s a few players who weren’t signed by him. I’m sure he’d own it.

Are we really any better off with Madge. Let me say, this isn’t a call to sack the guy, because what better option would be available to us. However, is he really taking us to heights that we failed to reach with the previous 3? Because from where I am sitting, the results are the same.

It has to be said, that for 18 months we’ve been waxing on how much of an upgrade Madge was over Cleary. When you see how the Panthers are going, was it really. Again, not saying Madge is hopeless, but he’s not doing anything that the 3 others didn’t do. Potter and JT had no salary cap to work with yet got the same results, yet didn’t have that excuse. Madge has signed something like 22-23 players out of 30, and he needs time. It makes no sense.

Gunners, we are all over waiting for the good days to arrive. I hear you loud and clear. What Cleary did to us in unforgivable and we were vrery lucky a premiership winning coach as on offer to replace him.
I too remember 2014 and being told we are in a 2 year re-building phase. I now listen to no-one and have lost all faith on when or if the good times will roll around again.

I dont know about you but I do not get excited if we string 2 wins in a row together anymore. The past couple of years we have started the year very strong and I always say the same thing.. "Come and talk to me in June, if we are still travelling well then you may see excitement then."

Sometimes I really think re-location may be the only way to rid ourselves of this stink.

Sure there are a few bad contracts. But none worse than what some other clubs have. Look at Ben Hunt for Gods sake. If you are a coach worth your salt, you will still get something out of a bad contract. It’s not like guys like Mbye and Reynolds aren’t coachable. They’re representative players.

I hear you loud and clear. I love the WTs, but it's hard not to think we a just a doomed franchise with no light at the end of the tunnel.

I think they have to own a part of every loss.

Not sure how many times I’ve said that but you can’t expect instant results. Our cap is screwed, no finals in 9 years, our roster is big average and no big name players want to be here.

What Madge is going takes time and unfortunately as a consequence we will struggle on the field for a while longer. It’s a lot better than Cleary who screwed up our entire salary cap and we could barely score a point under him.

Gotta wait until the rebuild is complete to judge the coach fully

What do you mean by instant? 9 years since finals? almost
2 full seasons of Maguire in charge? Some get jack of being told to be patient. I remember I was told to be patient in 2014. I even remember the night. We’d been rolled by Manly at Brookie. Things were going to be great in a year or two. They weren’t. So what reason do I have to believe it now? Cos Madge hasn’t had a hand in signing 6 or 7 players to round out his squad? That’s going to finally make those calls for patience a reality. Really?

Mate some people don't like these types of postsm

WT have an image problem and constant turn over of coaches is a major contributor.

I would sign Maguire long term and let him rebuild the club unless we can attract Bellamy or Trent Robinson which is wishful thinking and not reality.

Recruit gun juniors from other clubs and mold them into a long term project. Let's associate the club with top schools for development programs including country kids.

Until we have success no top player will come to our club and like many sick of paying overs for has beens which gets us into cap issues.

We can't have recent history keep repeating itself. Sign of madness.

Maguire is battling years of Boys clubs mentally and just competing is good enough.

The greatest coaches in history couldn't turn our current squad into champions as they don't have the ability or skill sets. They occasionally put in 100% and jag a win but really false hope.

Coming 9th each year to me is a failure. We need to be top 4 and playing deep into September on a regular basis.

I feel there is still so much pain to come in future years but as a loyal WT supporter I will hang around. I put up with the Western Suburbs crap since 1977 so use to failure.

Sheens ....there is no comparison.

X a million. Not even close.

The "boys club" glory days.

They were good to watch though. Those teams in 10/11 played great rugby league.

We don’t play an attractive style of footy at the moment imo.

No argument from me. I had no problem with the "boys club" - which seemed like a group of players that loved the club and wanted to wear the colours - but plenty viewed it whole lot differently.
Best days of footy in my life time to date.

As for Ivan I actually think he learned from his mistakes with us and has made some astute signings at Penrith and given youth a chance which he never did here. They will probably win the premiership, I wish we had a juniors system like theirs

It’s also been reported that he walked into a club running like a well oiled machine after Gould laid the groundwork. I’m sure Ivan is also reaping the benefits of this and the general position the club found itself in when he arrived.
