Magpie Power Banner - Where is it?

Does anyone remember Des Drummond and Derryck Fox ?
They came with big reputations but didn't really deliver .. Not like Lee Crooks did.

I love this thread.

Des Drummond was as dark as Ellery, as "smooth" as Ellery, BUT wasn't the most successful finisher at the end of a back-line.
Although a highlight for me was that on one of our (in those days) very rare WINS over Manly, Des scored a pearler of a try to win the game for the maggies at Brookvale.
And in all, it was maybe one of his very few tries he scored in his time downunder.

Deryk Fox was a fair-haired 1/2 who lacked a bit of pace, but seemed to really try his best.
Sadly, his best was a bit below par.
Tackled lots as best he could, but really a 1/2 is there to get things going, direct traffic and set up plays, as well as the occasional dart etc etc. Mr Fox fell down in these attacking areas.

There again, along with other POMS that made it into Black & White jerseys like the Hendersons et al, the cameraderie and club spirit within the magpies was the constant that other clubs craved.

For me, I love Gary Schofield - he always was classy and WOW! He could make things happen.
Ellery was a Masterton purchase, and always handled himself with class - and put in 100% on the field.
Lee Crooks had a lot of Gareth Ellis about him; maybe not so good in some ways but the fans warmed to his 110% on the field and his courage in taking on all oppositions packs without fear.

Wests Magpies, win or lose, was always a club that knew how to have fun: at training, in its very social off-field pursuits and for us fans, very evident when tries were scored.

The fall of the Magpies since the 90s really distresses all fans that I know.

We had another Pom come out as well in around 84-85 Why does the name Andy keep popping into my head

Or maybe that was Brisbane Wests

Does anyone remember ??

What always made me laugh personally was we would always play "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang when we won

I hated that song when it come out , but when we won I would be grooving to it in the lounge room whenever or I heard it after a victory

I'll bet the result made you feel better Happy !!!
Isn't it funny when you're a long way away and you are trying to pick up a faint broadcast of the match. Eventually when you find the frequency it keeps tuning in and out … Geez that's annoying. That's in the days before Internet of course !

Yeah as happy as pig in mud Knuckles

Remember racing home after work to catch the Canberra semi on Saturday (missed the first 15 minutes )

Same thing with Cronulla semi years down the track

It was advertised as a delayed start at 8.30 , so I took the wife out for dinner to get home to find out that it was half time :rant :bash :brick:

You maybe thinking of Andy Gregory who played for the Illawarra Steelers around that time ???

I couldn't agree more T1 …. Things could have been done so much better.

But anyway, back to the topic, yes didn't we get great value out of the Englishman who played for the Mighty Maggie's.
Gary Schofield was just great for us ... In fact I would rate him the best Magpies player post the Lidcombe era 1987-99\. He gave us the excitement that had been lacking for so long. As mentioned above, Harvey Howard was great for us as well. I was a bit disappointed with Ellery ... Balmain got the best results from him.

Were you at Pratten Park the day Lee Crooks arrived ? We were playing Souths on a day like yesterday ... Cold, breezy and wet .... Couldn't have been more than 12 degrees. Rick Wayde interviewed him at half time and asked him how he felt being in Australia .... You know what he said ? .... it's a bit hot isn't it !

There was only about 2 or 3 thousand there that day but geez it got a good laugh !

Actually it was Andy Goodway who played for Brisbane Wests I was just popping on to correct myself

Andy Goodway …. Did he ever play in the Sydney comp or just the Brisbane comp ?

The name rings a bell.

Wikipaedia says he played for Manly , but I don't remember it and it doesn't give season when he did play

I wonder if it was when Graham Lowe was coach and he may have poached him from Wigan when Lowe left Wigan ??

Goodway also coached England in the Super League days

I can remember Kevin Ward playing for Manly but not Andy Goodway.

They had some luck with Englishmen too didn't they. Malcolm Reilly, Phil Lowe and Kevin Ward.
One thing about Manly is they alway recruit well ….. Just ask any Magpies fan who was around in the late 70's !!

How good are these memories?
I remember one day when we played Illawarra at Lidcombe in 1985, I was selling the doubles on the hill side, it was wet, windy and freezing, only a couple of thousand diehard fans there, and there was ONE guy in one of the temporary stands at the north-east end of the ground. He was huddled right up in the corner, I yelled out the usual spruik “Double on the main game, $90 for a dollar, $10 for the hookers”. I thought he would come down and meet me half-way, but no, I had to walk all the way up, and then he says “might get one later”.
Bastard.

Hahahah !!!

How good is that …. Not for you though DA1 !!!

Were you there in 1984 when we beat the Steelers to record our only win of the season ?
10-6 I think it was ... There was only about 3,000 there to see it and the Steelers had at least half the crowd !

Yeh, I never used to miss a game in those days. 1984 was a hard year, but the people we used to sit with each week made it fun anyway. Being involved in the Supporters Club, we made so many friends, sadly a lot have passed on, but the memories will never disappear.

I remember back then I used to catch the supporters bus to the away games. A fella name Jack Ashley used to run it …. He was a real nice bloke and had a good sense of humor which was needed back then. I used to go to Brookvale and Wollongong and got on at the corner of John st and Church st in Lidcombe outside the Pub. It then picked up outside Wests Ashfield where Mark the magpie Wallington used to get on. I won the raffle on the supporters bus one day and won a set of placemats which I still have. They were great days alright ... Probably because the supporters made it that way.

Crooksy at Pratten Park, I was there, and if my memory serves me well he broke his nose that game. Wasn't the first time though!

A true magpie legend I remember he used to deliver my junk mail and we always used to talk footy when I was out the front, great bloke. I think Michael his son went to my school from memory RIP magpie friend.
