Does anyone remember Des Drummond and Derryck Fox ?
They came with big reputations but didn't really deliver .. Not like Lee Crooks did.

I love this thread.

Des Drummond was as dark as Ellery, as "smooth" as Ellery, BUT wasn't the most successful finisher at the end of a back-line.
Although a highlight for me was that on one of our (in those days) very rare WINS over Manly, Des scored a pearler of a try to win the game for the maggies at Brookvale.
And in all, it was maybe one of his very few tries he scored in his time downunder.

Deryk Fox was a fair-haired 1/2 who lacked a bit of pace, but seemed to really try his best.
Sadly, his best was a bit below par.
Tackled lots as best he could, but really a 1/2 is there to get things going, direct traffic and set up plays, as well as the occasional dart etc etc. Mr Fox fell down in these attacking areas.

There again, along with other POMS that made it into Black & White jerseys like the Hendersons et al, the cameraderie and club spirit within the magpies was the constant that other clubs craved.

For me, I love Gary Schofield - he always was classy and WOW! He could make things happen.
Ellery was a Masterton purchase, and always handled himself with class - and put in 100% on the field.
Lee Crooks had a lot of Gareth Ellis about him; maybe not so good in some ways but the fans warmed to his 110% on the field and his courage in taking on all oppositions packs without fear.

Wests Magpies, win or lose, was always a club that knew how to have fun: at training, in its very social off-field pursuits and for us fans, very evident when tries were scored.

The fall of the Magpies since the 90s really distresses all fans that I know.

both of my namesakes were masterton purchases for a half season in 89 only.

schoey had already played 47 games over 3 seasons for balmain (making the top five each year) before you got him for 9 games along with Ellery's 13 games in 1989.

at the time Jim M wanted to mirror the success of those imports at balmain, but despite paying huge overs the magpies still only made equal 13th on the ladder with gold coast.

balmain's main pom in 89 currier cost a pittance compared to those two and finished the season as equal top pointscorer with rick walford and a grand finalist.

our other pom in 89 shaun edwards is one of the blokes who lost that GF in the dying stages for us so it aint all roses.

I remember back then I used to catch the supporters bus to the away games. A fella name Jack Ashley used to run it …. He was a real nice bloke and had a good sense of humor which was needed back then. I used to go to Brookvale and Wollongong and got on at the corner of John st and Church st in Lidcombe outside the Pub. It then picked up outside Wests Ashfield where Mark the magpie Wallington used to get on. I won the raffle on the supporters bus one day and won a set of placemats which I still have. They were great days alright ... Probably because the supporters made it that way.

The late Jack Ashley ran the Magpies supporter club, Tommy Raudonikis’ mum was also involved in the group, for those who attended games at Lidcombe in those days they used to be set up at a table at the entrance to Lidcombe Oval on game days selling supporters gear. In the 70’s we used pick up the supporter’s away bus at a small car park just behind the shops at Homebush, they also ran a BBQ in the hall next to Lidcombe Oval which many of the players attended after home games.
