Reward for good performance and bringing JAC??

It’s to avoid not making the same mistake with JT. With Taylor, they left the decision too late. We can’t go into a season when we have cash to spend, but an unsigned coach. Players need to know whose going to be in charge.

Good news, having no coach in 21 would make it difficult to attract players.

He’s already contracted for 2021. This a two year extension until the end 2023.

Your team will never be successful if you change the coach every couple of years. And kicking the dog when you get home from work will never improve things in the workplace.
Give the guy a chance to get some momentum.

Wests Tigers shut down murmurs of discontent by handing Maguire two more years

Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire has verbally agreed to a two-year extension that will see him remain at the helm of the club until at least the end of 2023.

Maguire endured a turbulent 2020 campaign with the Tigers, but despite the murmurs of discontent in the playing ranks, club officials have sent a strong message by extending the coach's contract 12 months out from the end of his current deal.

Maguire's coaching methods have come under scrutiny in recent months but the former South Sydney premiership-winning coach has the club's backing to undertake the necessary steps to turn the Wests Tigers into a successful franchise, including an overhaul of the roster.

While recognising the need for improvement in certain aspects, which will be highlighted in the club's end-of-season review, the board believes Maguire's hard-nosed approach is exactly what the club needs to shake a culture of mediocrity that has seen the joint venture miss the past nine finals series.

Maguire caught up with Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis on Tuesday and committed his future to the club. "I've had the opportunity to sit with Madge and I couldn't be more impressed with his passion and commitment to the Wests Tigers," Hagipantelis told the Herald.

"We share the same vision, which is long-term success. Madge is very excited about where this club is going and where he can take it."

Maguire was handed the extension a month ago, and some believed his delay in committing to the Tigers was due to potential interest in the Melbourne Storm job that Craig Bellamy is expected to vacate at the end of next year.

The Storm want someone with Melbourne DNA and Maguire ticks that box, having spent time under Bellamy as an assistant almost a decade ago. Maguire had also made discreet enquiries at rival clubs earlier in the year, however the Tigers are more than comfortable that the coach wants to continue what he started despite missing the finals in his first two years in charge.

"I don't think you can correlate the two," Hagipantelis said of the club's decision to extend the coach despite not playing finals football under him.

"We're looking for long-term sustainability, and we are looking at that with Madge providing it for us. We think two years is appropriate."

I think “sending a strong message” is a bit of hyperbole. They need to make a decision ASAP due to recruitment. They aren’t going to sack him, so just extend him.

I don’t think the Storm job suits Madge’s style?
He got Wigan a title after they were going nowhere for 10 years. He got Rabbitohs their first premiership in 43 years. The Tigers job is a nice challenge. Our problem will be, how do we keep him after we win our next GF?

Sorry, meant 2022.

I think this is exactly what “sending a strong message” to the playing group is. We back the coach, we are behind him. Softly softly approach hasn’t worked for 10 years so we need to try something different and give it time to work. In Madge I trust.

So Madge has the offer a month ago but waits to see if he can go to a stronger club.

When there are no takers he commits to Wests, Sounds dedicated.

And you know this how? Have you spoken to Madge? Do you have some inside knowledge of his thinking?

Well that’s rewarding mediocrity... something this club does well ! Maybe some runs on the board before rewarding this smells like desperation once again ..

We need stability.

Chopping and changing hasn't worked.

A good example for identifying a coach and having patience is the Richmond coach in the afl. He would have been sacked 3 times in the nrl. They kept him despite a few poor seasons early on.

He now has his roster and systems in place at the club and they have won 3 out of the last 4 premierships.

Excellent news. We’ve lacked stability at the club for a long time which is a big reason players don’t come here

If we are looking to sign players for 2022 like JAC then we need a coach signed up for then and now he is, it’s the first big step for starting our negotiations with players

I’m confident he, hartigan and Woodward can turn us around. We might not win a premiership but they’ll get us headed in the right direction and clear out the rubbish at the very least

Going nowhere is a bit of a stretch. The year before he took over they lost the preliminary final and had missed the finals only twice in 10 years. Pretty decent base to work with.

Who are the ‘some’? Any ideas?

You could argue just a year extension would be enough for the moment but can understand why the club went for two years. If we are still the same in 2022 he might not make it to 2023 anyway
